2 Claims.

The present invention relates to a garment construction and it particularly relates to a garment construction having readily adjustable length.

Although not restricted thereto, the present invention will be particularly described in its application to skirts, sleeves, coats, jackets, trousers, slacks and so forth, in which it is frequently desirable to alter the length, bottom or hem of the garment.

It is among the objects of the present invention to provide an adjustable garment construction of the character described in which, with a minimum of difficulty, cutting and stretching, and a maximum of speed and ease, the lower edge of the garment may be lowered or increased in length, or shortened or decreased in length.

Another object is to provide an adjustable hem construction for a garment of the character described to adjust its length and appearance, the adjustment of which will be normally largely concealed and inconspicuous and will not mar or deface the appearance of the garment or cause any bulge or gatherin therein.

Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.

In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found to be most satisfactory to provide a hem construction for the edge of the skirt, sleeve, coat, jacket, trousers or slacks, to be adjusted in length having an inside folded tape, the folds of which are detachably attached or stitched together and independently attached to or stitched to the edge of the skirt, sleeve, coat, jacket, trousers or slacks. The edge of the garment is folded upwardly and inwardly around, and held in position by, said inside tape.

By cutting and re-attaching said stitches, the hem may be lowered to a maximum extent or raised to any desired height. The inside folded tape will serve at all times to hold together the inside upfolded edge and the outer material. Normally there will be three stitched attachments, one holding the inside folded tape, which may be of woven silk, rayon, nylon or acetate, together and one holding the inside edge of the tape to the upfolded inturned edge of the outer fabric, both of which stitches are permanent.

2 The third replaceable and adiustable stitch will connect the outside edge of the tape to the outside fabric.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Fig. 1 is a vertical diagrammatic cross sectional view upon an enlarged scale of the inside folded tape stitched together.

- Fig. 2'is a vertical diagrammatic cross sectional view upon an enlarged scale of the hem construction with the inside folded tape having its inner edge folded over and stitched to the lower inturned and upturned edge of the outer fabric.

Fig. 3 is a vertical diagrammatic cross sectional view upon an enlarged scale of the hem construction with the inside folded tape having its inner edge folded over and stitched to the lower inturned and upturned edge of the outer fabric, and its outer upper edge stitched directly to the outer fabric in a lowered position of the hem.

Fig. 4 is a vertical diagrammatic cross sec tional view upon. an enlarged scale of the hem construction with the inside folded tape having its inner edge folded over and stitched to the lower inturned and upturned edge of the outer fabric, and its outer edge stitched directly to the outer fabric in a raised position of the hem.

Fig. 5 is a vertical diagrammatic cross sectional view upon an enlarged scale of the hem construction with the inside folded tape having its inner edge folded over and stitched to the lower int-urned and upturned edge of the outer fabric, with the stitching of the inside folded tape cut to show the lowest hem position.

Referring to Fig. 1, the inside tape H], which may be of woven rayon, silk or nylon, is folded at H and stitched at I2 substantially below the upper edges l3 and M. This will leave the upwardly extending free inside tape portions or extensions I5 and [6.

The main outside covering material I! is then folded up at It to form an inside flap IS. The inner extension l6 of the tape in is next folded at 20 down over the upper edge 2| of the flap l9 3 and is stitched to the flap l9 by the stitching 22.

Finally, as shown in Fig. 3, the outside extension I 5 of the tape I is stitched at 23 to the outside material The adjustable hem construction of Fig. 3 will then be complete.

To raise the hem from the position of Fig. 3 to the position of Fig. 4, the stitching 23 is cut and the flap I9 is elevated with a new fold at 24, and a lengthened inside fiap 30, and new stitching 2-5 is applied.

By cutting the stitching 12, as shown in Fig. 5, the hem may be entirely dropped with the fold 26, constituting the bottom thereof. The inside flap 3| will be quite short. The tape l0. willact as a suspension element in the position of Fig. 5. The present construction is most advantageous in requiring only a single stitching as shown at.

Having now particularly described and ascer'-- tained the nature of the invention,.and5 in what manner the same is to. be performed; what is claimed is:

1. An adjustable hem construction comprising an outside facing fabric, a narrow first hem lining fabric next inside said facing fabric, a second narrow hem lining fabric next inside said first hem lining fabric, and a second narrow facin fabric inside said second hem lining fabric, said lining fabrics and inside facing fabric having upper and lower edges, said outside facing fabric having a lower edge, the first and second lining fabrics being permanently connected at their lower edges and the first and second facing fabrics being permanently connected at said lower edges, the first and second lining fabrics being detachablyconnected adjacent their upper edges leaving an appreciable length of loop of lining fabric below said detachable connection which is free and independent of said facing fabrics, the first lining fabric being detachably connected to said first facing fabric solely at a location above said' first detachable connection, and the second lining fabric and the second facing fabric being permanently connected to thereby enable regulationofthe length of said hem construction by varying the length of said loop.
