UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE DURYEE, 'OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HYDROCARBON-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 253,270, dated February 7, 1882.
Application filed August 18, 1880. Renewed November 29, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DURYEE, M. D., of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators and Hydrocarbon-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination of a steam-boiler and an apparatus for generating and introducing therein a hydrocarbon blowpipe flame, whereby steam of a high pressure may be economically produced. The boiler is preferably cylindrical, with alongitudinal flue, and it may be horizontal or vertical. The apparatus for generating the blow-pipe flame consists essentially of an upright furnace, into the lower end of which is introduced a compound air and oil jet, which, being ignited, passes up through the furnace, and immediately opposite the flue in the boiler is crossed and deflected by a blow-pipe jet, the two jets uniting and passing directly through the flue, thereby heating the boiler in the most favorable manner.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawin which represents a longitudinal section of a steamgenerator embodying my improvements.
A is the boiler, shown in a horizontal position,'and having a single flue, B, extending from end to end. number of lines.
0 is an upright furnace placed immediately opposite one end of the boiler. Leading from There may, however, be any this furnace near its upper end is a flue, D, which projects within the flue of the boiler. Opposite this flue, and in line with it on the other side of the furnace, is a compound nozfuel-furnace 0 built in zle or blow-pipe, consisting of air-blast pipe E and interior oil-duct, F, the former leading from a suitable blower and the latter from an oil-reservoir.
Near or at the bottom of the furnace G is a similar pipe, H I, having a much larger proportion of oil. This blast-pipe supplies the furnace G with a large flame, which, ascending to the top of the furnace, is forcibly blown into the boiler-flue B by means of the more powerful blast issuing from the blow-pipeE F. The flame is designed to pass nearly or quite the whole length of the boiler, and the air and oil supplies are so proportioned as to make a complete combustion of all the fuel.
The flue D may be dispensed with and the boiler.
I disclaim invention in any of the elements of the apparatus, per so, my invention consisting in the particular combination of parts for the accomplishment of the purposes designated,
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A steam-generating apparatus consisting of a boiler, A, having a flue, B, combined with an upright fuel-furnace, O, in front, and a compound blow-pipe delivering a blast of com bined air and fluid fuel across the flame in the fuel-furnace in line with the boiler-flue, as described.
