EXTENDIBLE ERASER Filed Nov. l0, 1945 4614 44424 za 30 45 j] E0 E 58 Patented Nov. 2s, 1195o U'NlTED PATENT ortica` EXTN'DIBLE ER'ASR.
Jesse J. Robbins, Glendale, Gali., assigner to y Stylofede Corporatiom Glendale, Calif., a corporation. of California Application November 10, 1945, SerialNo. 627328 My invention relates to erasers and more parr ticularly tothat class of erasers adapted for at: tachment to automatic pencils.
Heretofore erasers attached to automatic pencils either extend normally from. the.- end ofthe pencil opposite thepoint or are enclosed within the said pencil. In the one case. the eraser is exposed to dirt, wear, and the like when not in use; and. in the othercase. it is necessary to remove the cap from the pencil before theeraser may be used,` causing.inconvenienceand possible misplacing ofthe said cap. Another ineen-- venience of the conventional type eraser-attachmentlies in the facttthat4 when theeraser is new, its use inferasing subjects the rubber-to extreme bending moments due to the distance between eraser tip and. eraser support. Frequently, this occasions breaking of the eraser.
It is my object to provide .an eraser attachable to an automatic pencil which is adaptedto eX- o tend from the end of the saidpe'ncil opposite the pencil point and which may be withdrawn oreXtended from said pencil at-the users wish.
Another object of my invention is to provide support for the said eraser midway between the eraser tip and the eraser support; in such manner that when the eraser is new, the,A bendingl moment upon theeraser when used is no more than the bending moment would .be itheferaserwere old and .worn down.
A further object of my invention is toprovida an extendable eraser constructionioffthe.character described wherein the eraser may be conveniently fed from anend of. a pencil aslit. isL worn awax,r in use, and wherein` a new eraserimay be.- quickly and easily. inserted when desired.
Another object of my inventionis to provide my extendable eraser attachment of simple, com.- pact construction of a minimum of parts.
Other objects and advantages of this invention, it is believed, will bey apparent from thefollowing detailed descriptionv` thereof as illustrated inthe accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure I shows a side view of "anmautomatic, pencil having my extendible eraser` extendingv therefrom.
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal cross sectiono,

Theextendible eraser construction-lofi the presa ent invention consists, briey, inthe combination with a tubular'pencil body. le: having aA bore H: opening to an` outer end l2 thereof," of a hollow nut' I8` journalled for rotation aty the body end l2A and'V having an.internally;tlfireadediopening I9 aligned withy the bore Il; a tubular capmember- 28 secured to thev nut |81 for rotation therewith and having aibore29 through: the lengthl off the cap member aligned with the borev Il andopen'- ing I9; a screw element threadablyengaged with the nut I8 and mounted. for longitudinal reciprocation.- inthe aligned-boresl Il and 2910i the body and cap; meenam; inthebore H1 in slidable-= engagement; with the inner extremity 1 ofi the screw element. 38.1. for restraining Athe latten against rotation relative to: the body? andV an' eraserf32 mounted for reciprocation in the cap bore 29 for extension from the vouteropen end:30 thereof and detachably secured to :the screw element.- 38 for longitudinal displacementltherebyi upon rotationrof the nut I8 andthe cap 28;
Anysuitable means may beiusednfor rotatably4 supporting thenut. laat the outer end. l2. As here shown, the end l2'of the bodyis 4off'reduced. diameter vandzexternally Vthreaded for receipt of `a surrounding, internally threaded collar `or ferrule I4 which likewisesurrounds the periphery of al shoulder 22:011 the nut'lZ. of the element, with its opposite ends extending into the aligned body and cap bores II and 29. As hereinabove noted, means 42 is provided in the bore II for restraining the screw element against relative rotation with respect to the body I0, so that upon appropriate rotation of the nutv I8 the screw element will be displaced longitudinally of the bores II and 29. may be of any convenient form and as here shown consists of a U-shaped member having dat, elongated parallel legs 43 and 45 fixed at their free inner ends to a transverse wall 44 provided by the body I0 across the interior of the bore I I and extending into the space between the legs 39 and 4I of the screw member to restrain the latter against rotation relative to the body I0.
The length of the screw element 38 and more specifically the toothed legs 39 and 4I thereof is such as to permit the extension of the end 43 of the element outwardly through the cap bore 29 to the exterior of the cap outside of the cap opening 30. Preferably, some suitable means is provided for limiting the outward extension of the screw element and in the present instance such meansis afforded by lugs i6 which are struck out from the legs 39 and 4I adjacent their inner ends and which on outward extension of the screw will abut the inside face oi the nut to prevent further extension of the screw member.
The eraser 32 may be of conventional cylindrical form, of suitable rubber material for erasing purposes, having an external diameter enabling it to t within and be displaceable through the cap bore 29. Preferably, the latter is tapered toward the end 30 so that the bore aperture thereat tightly embraces the periphery of the eraser 32 so as to firmly support the eraser body at this point. The opposite end of the eraser is desirably embraced within a surrounding sheet metal housing support 34, which, in accordance with the present invention, is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending clip or bracketv elements 36 of hook shape which are engageable over the opposite sides of the fiat end 43 of the screw element. The eraser may be most conveniently secured to the end 43 of the screw element by displacing the latter exteriorly of the cap opening 3B and then sliding the clip elements 36 transversely onto the opposite edges of the end 43, it being noted that the end is somewhat broader than the legs 39 and 4I so as to leave the opposite edges of the end 43 free for receipt oi` ment 38 aords a resilient spacing of the opposed l legs 39 and 4I enabling the springing of these legs toward each other for insertion in the nut I8. Advantage may also be taken of this resilient construction in effecting disassembly of the mechanism for repair or replacement of theparts,
This means 42 Vembraced position on the screw.
