Taf/266' WW m M M Patented Nov. 21, 1950 UNITED S TTQES PATENT OFFICE BOBBINBOX fwilliamiE. Turner, Chattanooga, Tenn., v'ass'ignor to y0. B. Andrews Company, Chattanooga, Tenn., a `corporation of Tennessee Appiicafion' May 1, 194s, serial`1\10.'.24,so4
This invention relates, generally, to containers jorfboxes, and it has lparticular relation tofbobbin boxes.
Amongthe objects-of 'this-"invention are: To set up from a one *piece paperboard blank a box which is capable ofholding lfourbobbins; to form the blank so that, when the "box is rset up, extensions from the j lower "edges 4of its side `walls Vare finterf'olded vto provide .four bobbin receiving spaces; to form V"the blank with extensions from the upper edges of one pair of side walls* arranged "so that they will'overlap when theb'ox is set up 'and being apertured to receive the upper ends 'of 'the bobbins; v'andto form 'thelblank with extensions from'the upper edges of the upper pair 'of fopposite side 'walls so that, when the box'i's set iup,they overlie 'the `upper ends ofthe' bobbins and can Vbe "interfolded with the overlapping extensions so as to close the upper endofthebox.
Other objects of this invention will, in partfbe obvious and in part appear hereinafter.
This invention is disclosed in the embodiment 'thereof shown in the accompanying drawing-s and 'it comprises the features `of construction, combi- 'nation of elements and arrangement vof 'parts which Iwill be `exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth `andthe scope'of the appli- `-`cation of `which will Vbe indicated'in the appended felaims.
Fora-more `complete understanding of the nature and-scope of thisinvention,'referenceecan'be had 4to the-following Idetailed description, taken together Vwith 'the accompanying drawings, in
which:
' 'Figure '1 is a plan view of :a one piece paperboard blank whichvca-n ble-set upto `forrnthe bobbin box-of the present invention;
Figure 21is a perspective view ofthe bobbin box `set up from the bla-nk shownin Figure l with the @cover extensions in the open position;

vrugated board-and like paper products which'are `relatively stiff and are capable of withstanding substantial stress.
As showninFigure Vl, the blank l @includes -vervtical lside Walls l2 and it and vertical end Walls i4 and l5. They'are joined together along score lines t6 alongr which they can-be 'folded at right angles jtoeach other inord'er to provide'the 'wall Jvportions of the box 'l I. 'Thewa'lls 12, 13, `V'Eiland i5 may be substantially identical. In a bobbin box which Vhas been constructed 'in'accordance with 'this invention, they are square and arenine However, it will be v'understood that the walls may be of'various "di-- mensions as desired depending upon the dimenslonsof the bobbins l'lwhich are s'hownin outline in Figure 3 ofthe drawings.
Along their lower edges, the side walls-l2 and y'I3 are provided lwith pairs of extensions V2li vand 2I which are joined thereto along score lines 22 and 123. vThe extensions 20 and'l are spaced-apart las indicatedv at 24 vand 25 t0 facilitate interfolding with extensions from the end Walls `lll and l5 which will be described presently. The outerfends "26 and v2'! of theextensions 2! and 2'I are arranged to be v'folded along score lines '28 and r29 so thatthey will extend upwardly from the 'bottom of the box! I.
The vertical end walls I4 and l5 are provided "with single extensions 32 and 33, and are arranged to be folded with respect thereto along scorelines "34 and (35. The outer ends 36 and 3l ofthe extensions 32 and 33 vare arranged to be Vfolded upwardly along score 'lines 533 and t9v and to interlit with the extensions 20 and-2! through 'the spaces 24 and 25 therebetween. In 'Figure -8 of the drawings the juxtaposed relationship between the outer ends 43'53 and 37 ofthe extensions32 and 23 is illustrated. Also in this figure the juxtaposed rel-a- Ationship Aof ythe outer ends '2li and 2l is shown. It will be observed vthat these iupturned end portions 2S, El, 36 and 31 provide four spaces Vfor receiving 'the' lowerends olf fourfbobbins I l.
When the side and 'end walls I2, i3, i4 and 15 are set up 'as illustrated in Figure 2 ofthe drawings, ythe juxtaposed edges of the wallslS'and l# can be held together 4by an adhesive strip .40. Gther suitable means for holding the 'juxtaposed `edgesoi the walls-t3 and le can be employed such "as/metallic stitch-ing and the like.
rIhe 'manner lin which the blank lo of paperboard is 'formed to provide a closure for the Atop o'f the bobbin'box vll *willbe described now. As l"shown'moreclearlyin'iigure l of the drawings,
the verticalside walls -12 and i3 lare provided with extensions that are indicated, generally, at 42 and 43. These extensions are joined to the upper edges of the vertical side walls I2 and I3 along score lines 44 and 45. They include rst portions 46 and 41 which, as shown in Figure 4, are arranged to extend at right angles to the side walls I2 and I3. The first portions 46 and 41 are joined along score lines 48 and 49 to intermediate portions 50 and 5I that, as shown in Figure 4, are arranged to be folded downwardly toward the bottom of the bobbin box II. The intermediate portions 50 and 5I are joined along score lines 52 and 53 to outer two part portions 54 and 55 which are spaced apart as indicated at '54 and 55. As shown in Figure 4, the portions 54 and 55 are positioned in juxtaposed overlapping relation below the top of the bobbin box I I a distance which is determined by the Width of the intermediate portions 50 and 5I.
With a view to centering the hub portions I1 of the bobbins I1, as shown in Figure 3, the portions 54 and 55 are provided with centrally located circular apertures 56 and 51 and also with centrally located semicircular apertures 58 and '59. As shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, the semicircular apertures 58 and 59 are arranged to register with the circular apertures 51 and 56, respectively, and the hubs I1' of the bobbins I1 project through as shown in Figure 3.
The cover for the bobbin box I I is provided by extensions E!) and BI, Figure 1, which are joined to the vertical end walls I4 and I5 along score lines (i2 and 63. The extensions 60 and 6I have narrowed outer ends 64 and 65 which are joined thereto along score lines 66 and 61. The narrowed outer ends 64 and 65 constitute tongues vwhich are arranged, as shown in Figure 3, to project through the registering spaces 54 and 55 between the portions 54 and '55 so that they are frictionally held in place, the outer ends 64 and 65 being folded, as shown, into juxtaposed relationship.
In order to facilitate opening the cover of the bobbin box II provided by the extensions BIJ and 6I, they are provided with openings 68 and 69 for insertion of the fingers, these openings being arranged to be closed by naps 1U' and 1I which are struck from the extensions 601 and 6I as shown more clearly in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Since certain changes can be made in the foregoing construction and different embodiments of the invention can be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, it is intended that all matter shown in the accompanying drawings and described hereinbefore shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
