It is still another object of this invention to provide, in a device of the type described, means automatically operable, following the transfer of a bobbin in the shuttle, for conditioning the thread extracting bar so it may again be advanced to an operative position upon a substantial exhaustion of the filling from a bobbin in the shuttle, said means comprising a pair of intermeshing pinions preferably mounted on a vertical axis on the planar portion of the support, one of the pinions having a bar advancing finger extending therefrom which is provided with a spring loaded cam surfaced thrust pin at the free end thereof, and the thread extracting bar having a follower pin projecting upwardly therefrom which is engageable by the spring loaded cam surfaced thrust pin for advancing the thread extracting bar to an operative position. The conventional transfer mechanism of the loomis adapted to move the free end of the 7 bar advancing finger in anarcuate path past the pin on the bar which will permit the thread extracting bar to be returned to its inoperative position without the necessity of the bar advancing finger on the pinion being returned at the same time.
, A connection is provided between the conventional latch depresser stud of the loom and the other of the pinions so that the latch depresser stud, upon being again moved to a normal position following a transfer operation, will cause the thread extracting bar advancing finger to return to its inoperative position, during which time the cam surface on the spring loaded thrust pin will engage the pin projecting from the bar to depress the spring loaded thrust pin as it passes thereby to again position the parts so as to again advance the bar to an operative position upon the filling being exhausted from a succeeding bobbin in the shuttle.

Referring more specifically to the drawings,
the numeral I0 indicates the right-hand side of bobbins or quills I5. The magazine shown is of the rotary type, but it is to be understood that any convenient type of magazine will operate equally as well in conjunction with the present invention.

The lay 32 is conventional and has disposed on each end thereof a conventional shuttle box, onlyone of which is shown and comprising a backbinder 35 and a conventional box front 36,-said box front being secured to a race plate 31 by any suitable meanssuch as bolts 40. This box front 36 has a suitable lining 4|, preferably of leather material, which is suitably secured to the side of the box front adjacent the interior of the shuttle box. This lining serves as a wearing surface against which a shuttle 42 slides when it moves-to boxed position. The box front 36. and the leather lining have coinciding slots or openings 53 therein and the shuttle 42 also has a slot 44 therein which registers with the slot or opening 43 in the box front 36 when the shuttle 4.2 is in boxed position.
During normal operation of the loom, the shuttle 42 is adapted to be projected back and forth across the lay 32 of the .loom, that is, from one shuttle box to the other, by means of pickers-45 on picker sticks 46, only one of each of which is shown in the drawings. The shuttle 42 has a quill or bobbin 55 therein upon which filling thread or yarn is wound and from this bobbin 50 is a strand of filling thread 5| which passes back and'forth across the As the .shuttle moves 7 lay, this filling thread 5| gradually unwinds from through the shuttle and through afsuitable opena ing 55 in the bottom of, the shuttle box. f
Thefill-ing detector, not shown, through inter \zenin'g connections well known to those familiar witli'lthe art, and shown in Patent Nos. 1,313,350, offliugust 19, l919, and 650,684, of May 29, 1900, and 1,496,640fof June 3, 1924, and 1,392,805, of
October 4, 1921, transmits partial counterclockwise rotation to a conventional starting rod 55 (Figures 4 and 8). This startingrod 55 is oscillatably mounted insuitable bearing blocks 55,
only one of which is shown in the drawings, and this bearing block 56 is secured, as by bolts 51, to the front vertical surface of thebreast beam ll (Figures'4, 6, 8 and 12). This bearing block 56 also oscillatably supports a conventional shipper shaft 65 which is not pertinent to the present invention. 1

integral with the feeler finger 63, by a conventional starting rod spring 10. The upper end ofv the starting rod spring 10 is connected to a tail portion H integral with the starting rod springhook 65 and its lower end is connected, in a conventional manner, not shown, to the sideframe I3 of the loom. The free end of the starting rod:
spring hook 65 has a longitudinally extending slot 14 therein in which a shuttle feeler pin 15 has longitudinal sliding movement.
The pin 15 projects inwardly from a shuttle feeler link 16, the left-hand end thereof in Figure 6 being pivotally connected, as at 11, to a conventional shuttle feeler bracket 80. The shuttle feeler bracket 80 is secured, as by bolts Bl to theinner surface of the loom side frame member It. The shuttle feeler link (6 has integral therewith a shuttle feeler 83 to which is se-.
cured, as by a bolt 84, a conventional shuttle feeler tip. 85.
, Secured to the shuttle feeler 83, as by a screw 86, is a laterally projecting portion 90 (Figure 1) of a latch depresser 9| having a slot 92 therein, which is penetrated by a bolt 93 for oscillatably connecting the latch finger 30. to the latch depressor 9| (Figures 4 and 8). The latch depresser alsohas a conventional latch depresser stud 94 projecting outwardly from the free end thereof (Figures 1 and 4). It is thus seen that upon a substantial exhaustion of the filling on the bobbin or quill (Figure 1), partial clockwise movement will be imparted to the starting rod ,in Figure 6 and will cause the feeler finger 63,along with its starting rod spring hook 65, to partially rotate in a clockwise direction, with the result that the shuttle feeler 83 will thus be caused to move in .a counterclockwise direction in Figure 6.
This will, of course, cause the latch depresser 9! to move from the position shown in Figure 4 to substantially the position shown in Figure 8 to cause the free end of thelatch finger 30 to be moved to a position where the hunter 3| will strike the same, upon a beat-up stroke of the lay 32, and cause the latch to move forwardly in the manner heretofore described for actuating the transfer arm 2!. The parts heretofore described are'conventional parts of a loom and it is with these parts that the present invention is adapted to beassociated.
Theimproved filling thread extracting, clamping andcutting device comprises a support broadly designated at Hi6 and having a boss portion ml which is fixedly mounted on the conventional transfer" stud 22,,as byset screws I02. This support, I05 has a downwardly extending stem portion I05, in Figures 4 and 8, and also has a planar base portion I03 cast integral with the lower end of the stem ")5.
This base portion I56 tially the same horizontal plane as that occupied by the shuttle 42 when the lay 32 is in a beat-up position. The shoulder screw 122 projects downwardly and a substantially horizontally disposed link I23 having a longitudinally extending slot I24 therein is-mounted for sliding movement on the shoulder screw I22. The link I23 extends rearwardly and i pivotally connected, as by a screw I25, on a cuff member I26 which is adapted to be slidably mounted on the conventional latch depresser stud 94 as shown in Figures 4, 8 and 12.
Welded to the peripheral surface of the pinion I I5, as at 136, is one end of an extracting bar advancing finger I3I having a longitudinally extending bore I32 in the free end thereof (Figure 7) in which a compression spring I33 is mounted. The advancing finger I3! also has coinciding 1ongitudinally extending slots I34 therein for purposes to be presently described.
The compression spring I33 urges a thrust pin I36 outwardly, the thrust pin I36 having a transverse guide pin I 31 fixedly mounted therein, as by a pressed fit, and opposed ends of the stop pin I31 have sliding movement in the slots I34 in the extracting bar advancing finger I3I. The guide pin 131 not only restricts outward movement of the thrust pin I36 in Figure '7 but also preventsthe thrust pin I36 from being rotated in the bore 132 in the end of the bar advancing finger I3I. j l
The leading edge of the thrust pin I36 is preferably flattened or cut awaya-s at I46 (Figure '1), and, upon counterclockwise movement of the bar advancingfinger I31 in Figure '1, the surface I40 engages a follower sleeve I4! rotatably mounted on a screw I42 (Figure 12) threadably imbedded in a thread extracting bar I43, for moving the thread extracting bar I43 rearwardly from the position shown in Figure 7 to substantially the position shown in Figures 1, 2 and 12 during a transfer operation.
The thrust pin. I36 is also provided with a rounded cam surface I45 disposed on the opposite side of the thrust pin I36 from the flattened surface 146 so when the thread extracting bar I 43 has been projected forwardly, or to the position shown in Figure 7, but with the bar advancing finger I3I remaining in substantially the position shown in Figure 1, the bar advancing finger l3I may be partially rotated in a clockwise direction, from the position shown in Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure '1, and, in so doing, the cam surface I45 of the thrust pin I36 Will engage the follower sleeve Mi which will cause the thrust pin E35 to partially recede into the bore I32 in the bar I31 so as to move past the follower sleeve I4! and to the position shown in Figure '7. The planar base portion I06 of the support I00 has a rearwardly projecting portion I46 integral therewith to which the rear end of a cover plate I41, having a slot I56 therein, is secured,

It is thus seen that the screw I42 restricts longitudinal movement of the thread extracting bar I43, as movement is imparted thereto in opposite directions, by engaging opposite end walls of the slot I50.
Referring to Figure 5, it will be noted that the planar base portion I06 of the support I00 hasa bore or cavity I55 therein in which a detent compression Spring I56 is mounted and the free end of which normally urges a detent ball I51 outwardly and into the slot I53. The planar base portion I06 of the support I00 also has an access opening I60 therein for inserting the compression spring I56 and the detent ball I51 in the cavity or bore I55. The thread extracting bar I43 has a rounded notch I6I cut in one side, adjacent its lower end in Figure '1, into which the detent ball I51 is urged by the compression spring I56 for locking the thread extracting bar I43 in advanced position for a part of the period during a transfer operation, as Will be later described.
The thread extracting bar I43 also has a longitudinally extending rounded bottom groove I62 therein, the left-hand end of which terminates closely adjacent the notch I6I and the other end of which, in Figure 12, terminates substantially midway of the length of the thread extracting bar I43. This groove I52 is provided to accommodate the detent ball I51 during rearward and forward movement of the thread extracting bar I43 and is of such depth that the detent ball I51 will not be forced against the wall of the slot I62 by'the compression spring I56 which would resist movement of the thread extracting bar I43.
The bottom wall of the groove I53 has a slot I65 therein (Figure 12) which is adapted to be slidably penetrated by a restricted threaded portion I66 of a breach block I61. This restricted threaded :portion I66 is threadably imbedded in a bottomed threaded bore in the lower surface of the thread extracting bar I43. The end Wall of the slot I65 in Figure 12 thus restricts movement of the thread extracting bar I43 from right to left when this wall is engaged by the restricted threaded portion I56 of the breach block I61.
The breach block I61 has a forwardly extending horizontally disposed breach pin housing I10 secured therein, as by a set screw I1I (Figures 2 and 12)'. The breach pin housing I10 has a cavity or longitudinally extending bore I12 therein which is closed at its front end and in which a compression spring I13 is mounted. This compression sprin I13 normally urges a headed breach pin I14 rearwardly or outwardly with respect to the opposite side of the breach block I 61 a from which the breach pin housing I10 extends.
Thebreach pin housing I10 has a pair of coinciding longitudinally extending slots I15 therein which are adapted to be slidably penetrated by opposed ends of a stop or guide pin I16 which penetrates the breach pin I14 and extends outwardly at opposite sides thereof to thus restrict outward movement of the breach pin I14. The guide pin I16 may be secured in the breach pin I14 as by a pressed fit.
As heretoforestated, when the bar advancing finger I3I is partially rotated in a counterclockwise direction in Figures 1, 2 and 7, the thrust pin I45 engages the follower sleeve I4I to thus advance the thread extracting bar I43 to operative position. Now, in order to restrict forward movement of the bar advancing finger I 3| there is provided an advancing finger stop pin I which projects upwardly from the :planar base portion I06 of the support I 00 closely adjacent the pinion II6. This advancing finger stop pin I80 may be 9 secured in the planar base portion I06 of the ffillingcutter I00, by any suitable means such as a pressed fit, or it may be provided with arestricted threaded lower portion which would be threadably imbedded in the base portion I06.
- Now, in order to transmit partial counterclockwise rotation to the bar advancin finger I3l, so "as to advance the thread extracting bar l43 from the position shown in Figuresf l and 7 to the position shown in Figures 1,' 2 and 12, rearward movementof the latch depresser 9|, which is caused during a transfer o.peration,'in the man-,
ner heretofore described, will cause the latch de-' "presser stud 94 to move rearwardlyfas a result "of-'which the front wall of the slot I24 in the link [23 will engage the shoulderscrew I20 to transmit partial clockwise rotation to -the pinion H5 the-thread extracting bar I43 will'pass through 'theopenings 43 and 44 in the box front 36and the shuttle 42, respectively, as the beat-up stroke is being'completed.
Now, by referring to Figure 12, it will be observed that the free-or operating end of the thread. extracting bar I43 has a substantially -V'shaped notch I82 cut therein and the bar I43 alsoflhas a transverse hole I33 therein, the 'v shaped notch I82 and the hole I83 being'joined by a communicating slot I85, 50 as to form a hook shaped portion I85a' at thethread engaging end Y lot-the thread extracting bar' I43.
- Now, as the thread engaging end of the thread extracting bar I43 moves through the openings '43 and 44 inthe box front 36 and the shuttle 42, the filling thread 5I, which is drawn reasonably 'tautacro ss the'openings 43 and 44 ,-isengaged by 'the thread engaging end of the thread'extr'acting :ba'r I43 and the V-shaped-notch 182 will guide 'the filling thread 5| through theslot I85 and =thus to the hole I83 where it Will'be engaged by the-hook portion- I85a upon reverse movement of the bar I43.
- 'At the same time and as the lay32 continues itsforward or beat up stroke, the lay 32 will en- Lgage the free end-of the breach pin I14to'cause .the same to move into the breach pin housing I10 and to place the compression spring I13 under considerable pressure. The lay 32 then pushes .the head of the pin I14 against the breach block 161 and thus causes the thread extracting bar I43-to be moved in such a manner as to force the detent ball l5! into the cavity I55 and t thus break the locking effect of the detent ball I 1. In a filling replenishing loom having a lay and a shuttle box at at least one end of the lay for receiving a shuttle having filling thread therein and said shuttle box having an opening therein coinciding with the path of travel of the filling thread carried by the shuttle, an improved thread extractor and cutter comprising a support, means securing the support to the loom, a thread extracting bar mounted for forward and rearward sliding movement in the support, a pair of intermeshing pinions mounted for oscillation on the support, a connection from one of said pinions to the filling replenishing mechanism of the loom for imparting partial rotation thereto upon the transfer of a bobbin in the shuttle, a thread extracting bar advancing finger projecting from the other of the pinions, a follower on the thread extracting bar engageable by said bar advancing finger for advancing the thread extracting bar to operating position, said thread extracting bar having a hook portion at the operating end thereof adapted to engage and hook the filling thread as it passes through said opening in the shuttle box, means engageable by the lay of the loom for imparting sudden movement to the thread extracting bar in a direction away from the lay of the loom for withdrawing the filling thread from the shuttle box, and a spring pressed cutter blade engaging the side of the thread extracting bar remote from the end of the lay whereby upon the thread extracting bar being moved in a direction away from the lay of the loom, the thread carried thereby will be drawn past the cutter blade to be severed thereby.

In a filling replenishing loom having ,a lay and a shuttle box at at least one end of the lay for receiving a shuttle having filling thread therein and said shuttle box having an opening therein coinciding with the path of travel of the filling thread carried by the shuttle, an improved thread cutter comprising a support, means securing the support to the loom, a thread extracting'bar mounted for forward and rearward slid- ;ing movement in the support, a pair of inter- =n1eshing pinions mounted for oscillation on the support, a connection from one of saidpinions to thefilling replenishing mechanism of the loom for imparting partial rotation thereto upon the transfer of a bobbin in the shuttle, a thread extracting bar advancing finger projecting from the other of the pinions, a follower on the thread extracting bar engageable' by said bar advanccm} whereby, upon the threadextracting bar being moved in a direction away from the lay of the loom, the filling thread will be drawn past said clamping member to be clamped thereby against the side of the thread extracting bar,
and a spring pressedblade engaging the side of the thread extracting bar remote from the end ofthe lay whereby; upon the thread extracting bar being moved in a direction away from the lay of the loom, the thread carried thereby will :be: drawn past the cutter blade to be severed thereby. i

In aifilli ng replenishing loom having a lay and a shuttle box at at least one end of the lay for receiving a shuttle having filling thread there- 'i'n and said shuttle box having an opening therein coinciding with the path of travel of the filling thread carried by the shuttle, an improved thread extracting device comprising a support, means securing the support to the loom, a thread; extracting bar mounted for forward and rearward sliding movement in the support, a pair of intermeshing pinions mounted for oscillation on the support, a connection from one of said pinions to the filling replenishing mechanism of the loom for imparting partial rotation thereto upon the transfer of a bobbin in the shuttle, a thread extracting bar advancing finger projecting from the other of the pinions, a follower on the thread extracting bar engageable'by said bar advancing finger for advancing the thread extracting b'ar to operating position, said thread extracting bar having a hook portion at the operating end thereof adapted to engage and hook the filling thread as it passes through said opening in the shuttle box and means engageable by the lay of the loom for imparting sudden movement to the thread extracting bar in a direction away from the lay 'Uof the loom for withdrawing the filling thread from the shuttlebox, said means engageable by the lay for imparting sudden movement to the thread extracting bar in a direction away from the lay of the loom comprising a breach block dependingfrom the thread extracting bar, a spring tent normallyholding the thread extracting bar in an advanced osition whereby, upon the spring loaded breach pin being moved a predetermined distance by the lay of the loom; the effect'of the spring loaded detent, as a holding means for the thread extracting bar, will be overcome and the spring associated with the spring loaded breach pin will impart suddenmovement to the breach block and the thread extracting bar in a direction away fromthe lay of the loom.

An improvement in a filling thread replenishing loom having a lay and a shuttle boxat the replenishing side of the loom for receiving a shutftle and the shuttle box having a box front provided with an opening adjacent the thread discharge end of the boxed'shuttle, the improvementcomprising athread extracting bar adapted to ensnare the outgoing thread through said opening in the shuttle box front, spring means operable by the lay for suddenly moving the thread extracting bar away from the lay to withdraw the thread from the'boxed shuttle, severing means engaging one side of the thread extracting bar for severing the thread upon the thread extractingbar withdrawing-the filling thread from the boxed shuttle, and clamping means'engaging. the other side of the bar for clamping an extracted thread, said spring means operable bylthe lay for suddenly moving the thread extracting bar away from the lay comprising a breach block depending from the thread extracting bar, a spring loaded breach pin mounted for sliding-movement in the breach block and adapted to be engaged by the lay of :the loom as the lay moves ina beat-up stroke to thereby create an increasing pressure on the breach pin and a spring loaded detent normally holding the thread extracting bar in an advanced position whereby, upon the spring l oaded'breach 'pinbeing moved a predetermined distance by the lay of theloom, the effect of the spring loaded detent, as a holding means for the thread extracting bar, will be overcome and the spring associ-'- ated with the spring loaded breach pi nnavillim' part sudden movement to the breach block and the thread extracting bar in a direction away from the lay of the loom.
9. An improvement in a filling replenishing loom having an oscillatable la provided with a. shuttle box and a battery for holding bobbins having thread thereon and. having means for transferring the bobbins from the battery into the shuttle box, said shuttle box having a box front provided with an opening therethrough; said shuttle box being adapted to receive and box a shuttle, said shuttle having a hole through the side thereof coinciding with the hole in the box front when the shuttle is boxed, said improvement comprising a spring pressed thread extracting bar having a hook on its end adjacent the shuttle box for passing'through the holes in the box front and the shuttle for en'snaring a thread on a bobbin about to be transferred and having means enga'geable by the lay ofthe loom for releasing the spring pressed means to quickly withdraw the thread extracting bar from the shuttle box, a clamping means ,slidably engaging that loaded breach pin mounted for sliding movement in the breach block and adapted to be engaged sure on the breach pin and a spring loaded deside of the thread extracting bar adjacent the edge of the cloth being woven and having a cutter member engaging the opposite side of the thread extracting bar for severing the thread which is extracted from the shuttle box by the thread extracting bar. I 10. In a loom having an oscillatable lay provided with a shuttle box on one end thereof and having a filling replenishing mechanism, said shuttle having thread therein and having a box front on one side thereof provided with an opening and the shuttle having an opening coinciding with the opening in the box front when the shuttle is boxed, combined thread extracting, clamping and severing means comprising a thread extracting bar slidably mounted on the loom and adapted to pass through the holes in the shuttle box front and the shuttle upon a beat-up motion of the lay, said thread extracting bar having tension means normally tending to move it away from the shuttle box and having a detent for holding it in extended position when it passes through the holes in the shuttle box front and the shuttle, detent releasing means engageable by the oscillating lay upon a beat-up motion to unlatch the thread extracting bar to allow its tension means to quickly withdraw the thread extracting bar from the shuttle box, .said thread extracting bar having a hooked portion adapted to ensnare the thread and withdraw it through the opening in the box front, and said thread extracting bar having clamping and cutting means associated therewith adapted to engage the thread upon the tension means returning the thread extracting bar to normal position.

In a filling replenishing loom having a lay and a shuttle box at at least one end of the lay for receiving a shuttle having filling thread u therein and said shuttle box having an opening therein coinciding with the path of travel of the filling thread carried by the shuttle, an improved thread cutter comprising a support, means securing the support to the loom, a thread extracting pinions, a follower on the thread extracting bar engageable by said bar advancing finger for ad vancing the thread extracting bar to operating position, said thread extracting bar having a hook portion at the operating end thereof adapted to engage and hook the filling thread as it passes through said opening in the shuttle box and means engageable by the lay of the loom for imparting sudden movement to the thread extracting bar in a direction away from the lay of the loom for withdrawing the filling thread from the shuttle box, a thrust pin mounted for longitudinal sliding movement in the free end of the bar advancing finger, spring means normally urging said thrust pin outwardly with respect to the bar advancing and said thrust pin having a cam surface on the side thereof remote from the operating end of the thread extracting bar whereby, upon movement being imparted to the bar advancing finger in a direction toward the operating end of the thread extracting bar, the thrust pin will engage the follower associated with the thread extracting bar for advancing the thread extracting bar to an operating position and, upon movement of the bar advancing finger in a direction away from the operating end of the thread extracting bar,- following movement of the thread extracting bar in a direction away from the lay of the loom, the cam surface on the thrust pin will engage the follower associated with the thread extracting bar and will recede into the bar advanoing finger so as to move past the follower associated with the thread extracting bar.
