2 Claims.
This invention relates to a gate.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved gate, such as is utilized on farms or the like, characterized by relatively great strength and consequent 1 freedom from sagging or disalignment.
An additional object of the invention is the provision-of an improved gate characterized by the absence of supplemental reinforcing members.
Other-objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of themvention proceeds, and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a gate constructed in accordance with the instant invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view disclosing the connection of component parts of the gate.
Figure 3 is a top view of the structure disclosed in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view showing one of the elements utilized in construction in its original state.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, one form of gate embodying features of the instant invention may be comprised of a U-shaped frame including a horizontal bight portion Ill, bent at its extremities, as at l l, to form vertical leg frame portions 12. The lower portions of the vertical parts [2 are connected by a bar l3 positioned longitudinally of said frame, which in turn is connected to the member II] by second bars or uprights I4 positioned transversely of and within said frame. If desired, the uprights I 4 may be connected to the portions [2 and to each other by horizontal members or third bars [5 positioned longitudinally of the bight of said frame and spaced from said first bar l3.
In the manufacture of the gate, sections of pipe l6 are first measured and cut to the desired length, as shown in Figure 4, and the ends I'I flattened to a thin edge, as indicated at H, in any desired manner, as by means of an anvil l8 and sledge l9, as shown in Figure 5, to provide fish-tails substantially wider than the diameter of the pipe, The thin edge ll of each fishtail has its sides 22 and. 22 converging toward the other end of the fishtail, Figure 2. The flattened ends or fish-tails l! are then adapted to be welded along both sides by welds [9 to an adjacent section of pipe IS. The welding operation is disclosed in Figure 6, wherein twosectionsl of pipe I 6, one having'afish-tail end I1, are adapted to be connected by welds 19', using any suitable welding implement 20. a
{ By flattening the ends of the pipe sections, to provide the fish-tail, I 1, it fwill-beno'ted that a mm and secure welded connection of relatively great strength is provided between the component parts of the gate structure, the flattened ends providing relatively large contact surfaces, and, due to the elongated condition thereof, facilitate the ready welding of the component parts.
Obviously, a gate constructed in this manner will be of relatively great strength, and consequently will need no reinforcement other than its component parts, as indicated in Figure 1.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an'improved gate, characterized by an improved method of manufacture, which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A gate comprising a U-shaped frame having two legs and a bight connecting one end of said legs together, a bar positioned longitudinally of the bight of said frame and intermediate the legs of said frame inwardly of and spaced from the free end thereof, a fish tail provided with a thin edge at one end thereof and having its sides converging toward the other end positioned in alignment with each end of said bar with the other end fixedly secured to the adjacent end of said bar, the thin edge one end of each of said fish tails being engaged with the portion inwardly of and spaced from the free end of the adjacent leg of said frame and secured by a weld thereto, a second bar positioned transversely of and within said frame intermediate and spaced from the legs of said frame, and a fish tail having a thin edge at one end thereof and having its sides converging toward the other end positioned in alignment with each end of said second bar with the other end fixedly secured to the adjacent end of the latter bar, the thin edge one end of one of said fish tails on said second bar being engaged with and secured by a weld to the adjacent portion of the bight of said frame and the thin edge one endof the other'of said. fish tails on said second bar being engaged with and secured by a weld to the adjacent portion of said first bar.
2. A gate comprising a U-shaped frame having; two legs and a bight connecting one of said legs together, a bar positioned longitudinally of the bight of said frame and intermediate the legs of said frame inwardly of and spaced from the free ends thereof, a fish tail provided with a thin edge at one end thereof and having its sides converging toward the other end positioned in alignment with each end of said bar with the other end fixedly secured to the adjacent end, of said har the thin edge one end of each of said fish tails being engaged with the portion inwardly of and spaced from the free end of the adjacent leg of" said frame and secured; by a weld thereto, a
4 and secured by a weld to the adjacent portion of the bight of said frame and the thin edge one end of the other of said fish tails on said second bar being engaged with and secured by a weld to the adjacent portion of said first bar, a third bar positioned longitudinally of the bight of said frame and spaced from said first bar, and a fish tail provided with a thin edge at one end thereof and having its sides converging toward the other end positioned in alignment with eachend of said third bar with the other end fixedly secured to the adjacent end of said third bar, the thin edge one end of each of said fish tails on said third bar being engaged with the portion of the adjacent leg of said frame and secured by a weld thereto.
