FORMING DIE.
Application filed August 23, 1922. Serial No. 583,814.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, Crmnms D. BRIDDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crisfield, in the county of Somerset and 1 State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forming Dies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dies and is designed more especially as a means for forming the ends of the basket frames of oyster tongs such as are illustrated in my co-pending application, filed 'August 5, 1922, Serial J. 0. 579,917. In the structure of the copending application the end members of the basket frames are formed with convolutions to provide for the more secure anchora of the cross wires of the basket, and it is t e general object of the invention to provide a die by the use of which the end members of the frame may be conveniently and expeditiously shaped.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in one embodiment, means whereby the spacing of the convolutions may be varied as desired so that baskets of different sizes ma be produced by the use of a single die.

that form of the invention shown in F' 1 and 2, the die is illustrated as comprising a bed block which is indicated by the numeral 1 and which may be of wood, metal, or of any other material or compositions of materials found suitable for the purpose.
Upon the upper surface of the bed block which surface is indicated by the numeral 2 and is plane, there is arranged a series of 45 die or forming elements which are indicated in general by the numeral 3. Each of these elements comprises a substantially cylindrical body 4 which may be of rod material, tubing, or any other material found suitable and which is provided at its ends with downwardly right angularly turned anchorings legs 5 designed to be seated in sockets 6v ormed in the block 1 and o ning through the upper surface 2 thereo Any desired number of the members 3 may be employed and it will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings that the sockets 6 are arranged in twov series at opposite sides of the longitudinal middle of the block, the sockets of one series being located relatively close together and the sockets of the other series being more widely spaced. Therefore, when the anchoring legs 5 of the die members are seated, fitted or driven into place into the sockets, the said members will extend along lines converging toward that side of the block at which the sockets are relatively closely spaced.
In order that the material of which the ends of the basket frame are formed. may be retained in place in proper relation to the forming elements 3 during the forming op eration, retainin yokes 7 and 8 are secured upon the upper ace of the bed block at opposite ends of the series of forming elements and in suitably spaced relation to the endmost elements of said series. These yokes are preferably of inverted U-form and the same are secured at the ends of their side portions in any suitable manner to the said upper face of the bed block.
In the use of the die, each end member of the tong frame is formed by inserting the initially straight member through corresponding ones of the yokes 7 and 8 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the said member being indicated by the reference letter A, so that the member will extend above the series of formin elements. After the said end member of t e frame has been properly positioned, it is struck blows with a hammer as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings at points between the forming elements 3 and between the end ones of the series 5 of forming elements and the yokes 7 and 8, the cylindrical contour of the said forming elements 3 resulting in the formation of convolutions B at the proper intervals in the length of the material acted upon. When the work A is fitted through the yokes 7 and 8 close to the ends of the elements 3 which are located relatively near one another, the convolutions B will, of course, be relatively short and on the other hand when the work is inserted through the yokes which are in juxtaposition to the intermediate portions of the elements 3 or the other ends of said elements, the convolutions formed will be of eater length. Therefore, by selectively tting the work through any one of the sets of yokes provided,
convolutions of substantially any required length and spacing may be formed inthe work.
.In that form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the bed. block is indicated in general by the numeral 9 and the same is provided upon its upper surface with yokes 10 and 11 corresponding to the yokes 7' and 8 exceptthat in this instance it is only necessary to employ a single set of yokes. The block is formed With three or more series of sockets indicatedby the numerals 12, 13 and 14:, all of the series extending parallel to one another and the. series being duplicated at the opposite sides of the longitudinal middle of the block. The sockets 12 are located relatively close to one another, the sockets 13 more Widely spaced, and the sockets 14 still more Widely spaced. The forming elements'in this embodiment of the invention are indicated by the numeral 15 and are provided With anchoring legs 16 at their ends corresponding to the legs 5 in the previously described form of the invention. It Will now be evident that the legs of the elements 15 may be disposed Within corresponding'one's of the sockets 12 and corresponding ones of the sockets 13 or 14 and that in the several instances the said elements Will be spaced apart varying distances. The manner of, employing this type of die is substantially identical with that previously described.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
1. In a die, a bed block having a plane upper face, a series of spaced die rods upon the block, means associated with. the die rods and entering the face of the block to anchor the said rods thereon, and retaining means for the work at opposite ends of the series of die rods.
2. In a die, a bed block, a series of die elements upon the block arranged in spaced non-parallel relation, the said elements having a general cylindrical contour, and retaining means for the Work at the opposite ends of the series of elements.
3. In a die, a bed block, a series of die elements upon the block arranged in spaced relation and relatively diverging in a direction from one side of the block to the other, and a series of Work retaining devices upon the face of the block at each end of the series of die elements.
