SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,867, dated January- 31, 1852. I Application filed Xoven bcr 28 1881. (No model.) i I T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIAs A. CLEAVELAND, a citizen of the United States, iesiding at Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which thefollowing is a specification.
Myinvention relates toimprovt'mentsin that class ofspring mattressesorbed-bottoms know u as invalid-beds, and its objects are to produce a bed having a head portion capable ot'an upward-inclined adj ustuientwithout inateiially changing the relative po-ition' ot' the mattressbearing surface of the springs, and to so eon-- nect the springs on the outer edge of thespringbottom, in connection with their diagonal con- 1 nection, as to limit their independent action. These and the means for accomplishing these results constitute the subject-inatter of this specification, and-will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrieal representation of my improved bed-bottdm, in which the springs are omitted. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a bed embodying my invention, of which 'Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is also a side elevation, in which the adjustable head portion is shown in an elevated position. Fig.5 is a vertical transverse section on dottedv line a, showing the hingejoint connection of the adjustable head portion.
In the figures, A represents the outside and B the inner lengthwise beams of the bed-bottom, on which are suitably fixed the transverse slats O, on which the springs are mounted.-
At a are represented 'bars suitably slottetL lengthwise to receive the pivot-bolts of the adjustable head portion of the bed-bottom.
At D are represented side beams of the adjustable head portion of the bed-bottom. The end portions of these beams at b are titted with an outward-projecting stud or pivot-bolt, c, of a proper size to enter the slot in the bars a in such a manner as to slide lengthwise therein freely. These bars are placed on the inside of the side beams A of the bed-bottom, at the head end thereof, with their pivot-boltsinserted into the slots of the bars a, and the beams resting against their inner surface. These beams are fixed in this relative position by means of the spring-supporting transverse slats E, which at proper intervals are securely fixed to their upper surface, produc ng a supplementary adjustablehead-frame, having a -pivotal connection with the slotted bars (I, to slide lengthwise therein, and its free head end extends to the head end ofthe main side beams and capable of being elevated or depressed, as may be requit-ed.
At dare represented braces, one end of which, as at e, is pivoted to the outside of the side beams I) of the adjustable head-frametoward their inner end, and the outer ends of these braces d are pivoted, as at h, to the inside of the head-end portion of the outside beams A, of the main bottom. By this araulgenient it will be seen that if thefree end of the adjust-able frame is elevated or depressed thepivoted end of the side beams of this frame will slide lengthwise in the slotted bars a.
At t are represented segment ratchet-bars, pivoted at their upper ends, as at 70, to the outside of the side beams D of the head-frame in recesses prepared to receive them. These segment ratchet-bars areslottedlengthwise,as at Z, to receive and slide on a stud, m, projecting from the outside of the braces 61. These slotted segment-bars, on the concave edge of theirslotted portion, are provided with ratchetteeth n,adapte d to engage the stud 1n, projecting from the braces (1, operating to hold the head-frame in any adjusted position within the limits of the device. The lower ends of these segment-ratehets are connected by means of a transverse rod,0, to the center portion of which is fixed a suitable cord,p, from which point it extends upward, and is passed through a suitable loop or staple, r, in the end slat of the headframe, and is employed to disconnect or lift and hold the ratchet-teeth from engaging the stud m to lower the head-frame.
At F are represented spiral springs, made in the usual form from suitable material, and are distributed at suitable intervals on the transverse slats G and E, to which their foot-coils are fixed, in this instance by means of suitable staples spanning the foot-wire and driven into the slat.
At H is represented a suitable elastic wire, which is passed through loops 8, formed by the end of the spring-wire on the upper coil ofthe spring. This wire H, as will be seen in the drawings, encircles the entire mattress, passing through the loops of the springs and forming the complete outline of the mattress. The springs within the outline-wire employed to produce a complete springmattress are suitably connected by diagonal links t, which are of spiral-spring form, having their ends by means of suitable loops independently connccted to the spiral springs and to the central ring, at, producing an independent diagonal elastic connection of the springs Fand central ring, a.
By means of the outline-wire H, in connection with thediagonal spiral'springconnectinglinks 1, with the spiral springs F, and with the center rings, a, I so combine the action of the springs as to produce a superior bed, and by this arrangement of the adjustable head portion bylneans of its sliding pivotal and its brace supports I produce a bed in which the relative distance between the springs at their bearing-surface will be practical y the same in any position of the adjustable head portion within the limits of the devices. In this instance I have only represented a few of the spiral-spring connecting-links tin connection with the spiral springs F and the rings to; but the purpose is to employ themin all the angles instead of the rod-like links shown in the plan view, Fig.2. In this instance I have employed a segment-ratchet for the purpose of adjusting or varying the angle of the head portion relatively with the main portion of the bed; but for this purpose there may be employed a ratchet-bar placed upon the upper surface of the head-end portion of the outer side beams, and a pawl pivoted to the side beams of the adjustable head portion, in such relative position with the ratchet-bar that its free end will engagethe teeth thereof.
I claim as my invention- 1. In an invalid-bed, the combination, with the horizontal rails, of a head portion, the side bars of which are provided with studs, the slotted plates secured to the inner sides of the horizontal rails, adapted to receive said studs, and braces and adjusting devices, substantially as set forth.
2. In an invalid-bed, the combination, with the boss A, of the head-bars D, slotted supporting-pieces a braces d, having studs m, and
the pivoted slotted ratchet-bars 17, substantially as set forth.
'3. The combination, with the spiral springs, connected by rings and diagonal spiral springs, of a border or selvage \vire surrounding and connecting the upper outer portion of the springs by means of a loop-connection of the end portion of wire from which the spring is formed, substantially as set forth.
