The rear, or coupling face l5 of the ring is serrated, or provided with radial teeth for co-action with an intermediate coupling ring or expander [6, which is fashioned of resilient material and split at M for mounting on the grooved barrel.
The body of the coupling ring is fluted. as at I! to provide double, or dual, serrated faces, that co-act with a second, similar, indicator ring, as well as the ring 12.
,The second ring [8 of resilient material is also split for readily slipping into place, and it is the first ring to be seated in the channel, after which the coupling ring I6 and the front ring ii are successively seated.
The ring [8 is mounted in the channel with its plane face in frictional contact with the wall I I, and this ring, which is equipped with a longer longitudinally extending, outset or offset pointer l9, is'provided with a serrated face 20 for comicrometer including the rotary cylindrical baraction with the resilient expander or coupling ring it. As indicated in Fig. 1 the pointers l3 and I9, although of varying lengths, terminate jointly for magnification with the graduations of the scales, and the ofiset or outset relation of pointer IS with respect to pointer l 3 permits relative movements of the pointers without interference.
The resilientintermediate expander or coupling ring in frictional engagement atits opposite sides with the two in'dic'atori" rings exerts siifilient pressure'orforce to create the required friction for retaining the three rings in operative relation. By grasping the three rings between a" thumb and finger they may be jointly revolved as or rotated, and with equal facility a selected one of the indicator rings may manually b'etiifnd with relation to the other ringandthe b arrel;- i j in calipering operations in connection with the adjustment of the two contact heads by nie ans of the operating screw.
