SPECIFICATION forming-'part of Letters Patent No. 252,408, dated January 17, 1882.

" Directory, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a means for indicating the names of persons or tirms occupying chambers or stores in a block of buildings bounded by certain streets. Iaccomplish this objeotby the mediumillustra-ted in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 isa side sectional elevation taken on the line .10, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a top view with hinged stops and binding-rod 'in position. Fig. 4 is a transverse view with hinged stops thrown back.

Heretof'ore it has been very diliicult to find persons, firms, and corporations occupying chambers, rooms, and stores in blocks, leading 'to much inquiring and travel around a block y of buildings in search of the person or persons wanted; but by means oi' my improved signboard or block-directory these objections are overcome, and the occupantfound without l trouble or delay.

In order to carry out my invention, I construct my sign-holder or directory in compartments A, bounded by the vertical cleatB and transverse intersecting cleats B. These spaces or compartments :are open at their louter ends for the purpose "of introducing painted signs, giving the nameof occupant, together with number and business in the block of that side of the street upon which the directory is placed. ' In order to guard against misplacement or `Willt'ul vandalism, I provide stops D D, which are hinged to each side of the sign-board ordirectory, andwhen opened outwardly the inner face `of the stop will be ona plane withthe face .of the directory, so that the sign may be taken out and replaced or reversed in case of removal. 1n the latter case the place oi removal of the person is painted upon the back of the sign previously occupied by him. When these stops are closed they shut over the outer ends of all the signs in the directory, and a binding rod, E, passes through theirupper ends,to one end of which a lock or. set-screw may be attached so as to prevent tampering with the signs. A relalarm or otherglass-covered box, F, is made in the lower portion of the frame, in which may Myblock-directory I place upon the diagonal corners of buildings at each .intersecting street, and affix it permanently to the wall of the building in plain sight of pedestrians, so that any person may consult the directory.
