UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. FELLOWS, OF CHELMSFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
LIFTER.
V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,025, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed October 14, 1-381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. FELLows,
la citizen of the United States, residing at Chelmsford, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, havein vented a new and useful Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
. The object of my invention Vis to furnish a device by which stove-covers, kettles, and similar articles can be lifted and handled with ease and safety. I attain this object by a combination of arms, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which 1 Figurel is a detailed view, in perspective, of the lifter, showing the different arms with their relations to each other. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the lifter. i v
Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Inthe drawings, A represents the handle of the lifter, which may be constructed of wood, metal, or other desirable material.,
B represents the long` arm of thelifter, which is attached to thehandle. This armis straight, or nearly so, with two sides, a portion of its length, and with small semicircular projections or ears near the middle of the under side of the arm, through which projections or ears the fastening-pin is passed which attach es the narrow end of the arm C to the arm B. The ends of the two sides of arm B are united by a piece of metal in circular form, which moves in the slot of arm D.
The arm C is constructed as shown in the drawings, being attached to the arm B, as
above stated, with its free end widened so as to fit into the slot in a stovecover and curved to the required shape.
The arm D is attached to the arms B and C, to the arm B by the slot above described and to the arm C by the pin, which holds it into the groove between theears or projections near the broad end of the arm C, beyond which end arm D extends.
l use metal in the construction of' all the parts of my lifter except the handle, which may be of wood or any desired material.
The several parts combined as above described forln a compound lever, the power being applied by grasping the handle Aand the weight, the article to be lifted to the broad free end of the arm C. The upper surface of this end and the under surface of the arm D may be roughened to insure a better grasp upon the weight. The weight applied to the free end of arm C causes that arm to drop until supported by the arm B in the slot in arm D, and draws down upon the surface end ofarm C the curved portion of arm D until it rests upon said surface or the weight there placed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Pa tent, is-
The combination of the arms B, C, and D, constructed and oper-.itin g substantially as described.
s CHARLES F. FELLOWS.
