Description
29, 1950' H. SCOTT-ELLIOT 2,520,225
BRAssIfiRE Filed Aug. 28, 1948 INVENTOR Helen Scuff-Elliot BY MWZZ/ ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 29, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,520,225 BRASSIERE Helen Scott-Elliot, Woodland, Calif.
Application August 28, 1948, Serial No. 46,625 3 (Jlaims. (Cl. 2-42) This invention is directed to, and it is an object to provide, a brassiere of novel design.
Another object of this invention is to provide a brassire having an excellent fit; the brassiere assuring of a maximum of breast support in a natural, healthful, position, minimizing strain on the glands and permitting the latter to function normally.
A further object of the invention is to provide a brassire which is arranged so that it readily compensates for body movements, while at the same time maintaining the desired support of the breasts; the design of the brassiere being such that the straps, edge portions, or other parts of the garment, do not cut in, bind, or chafe.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a brassiere, which is adjustable with respect to the fit of the breast receiving cups or pockets; such adjustment being accomplished by a novel arrangement of tie ribbons extending between the cups above adjust-ably lapping lower corner portions thereof.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a brassiere, wherein its excellent fit is due in part to the provision of elastic ribbon which extends in gathered hems or casings about the edges of the breast receiving cups or pockets, whereby the latter conform to bust size. Additionally, elastic shoulder and body straps impart an upward, and lateral or-sidewise tension, respectively, on the cups to further. enhance the fit of the garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brassiere which is comfortable, and easy to wear.
A further object of the invention is to produce a practical and attractive garment, and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects are accomplished in the manner as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
and elongated somewhat toward each other, whereby adjacent lower corner portions 2 of the cups :1I lap each other, as shown.. 1
The lapping, adjacent lower corner portions 2 of the cups I are secured together at the lower edge, and the brassiere includes, at said edge, and for its full width, a continuous bottom hem or edge casing 3 formed with said cups and connecting the same against lateral separation. This continuous bottom'hem or edge casing 3 is gathered, as at 4, and a length of elastic 5 extends through the bottom hem or edge casing '3, being secured to the lower outside corners 6 of the cups I. Similarly, each cup I is formed, about its side edges and across the top, with another and continuous hem or edge casing I having a length of elastic 8 extending therein between the lower corners of the cup, being secured at said latter points.
The hem or edge casing I is gathered, as at 9, in the same manner as the gathering 4 of the bottom hem or edge casing 3.
The cups I are of any suitable material, preferably bias cut, and formed, at the top or adjacent the apex, with a box pleat It. Additionally, each cup includes a central dart II which extends upwardly from the bottom hem or edge casing 3.
A pair of tie ribbons I2 are connected to the adjacent edges Of the cups I slightly above the lapping adjacent lower corner portions 2; such tie ribbons l2 being adapted to be secured as a bow tie I3 when the garment is in use; such tie being for the purpose hereinafter described.
Elastic body straps I4 are secured tothe lower outside corners 6 of the cups l and extend rearwardly; being adapted for adjustable connection at their free ends by means of a hook I5 on one strap and a row of eyes I6 on the other strap.
Elastic shoulder straps [l are secured to the cups I at the apex thereof, as at I8, and extend upwardly and thence downwardly to connection, as at I9, with the elastic body straps l4 intermediate their ends.
Normally somewhat slack, non-elastic limit tapes 2!! are connected between the lower outside corners of the cups I and the connection points I9 on the elastic body straps I4; said limit tapes 20 overlying said body straps I4.
In use, the garment is worn as illustratedjn Figs. 1 and 2, with the tie IlbQQDS IZ S GCUI'Ed together under some tension as a bow tie I3. This tying ofthe ribb'ons I2 draws all slack from the cups I'to enhance the fit thereof. The fit of the cups I is further improved by the provision of the elastic 5 and 8 in the bottom hem or edge 3, and other hem or edge casing 1 about the remaining edges of the cups, respectively. The gatherings 4 and 9 permit of the cups conforming nicely to the figure under the influence of the elastics, which elastics are under some tension when the garment is worn. The elastic body straps l4 exert lateral tension on the cups i from the lower outside corners, and the elastic shoulder straps I1 exert a, constant lift on the cups I from the top; all whereby the brassiere, when in use, supports the breasts in a very natural, healthful position.
The brassire is very comfortable and easy to wear; the arrangement of the elastics 5 and 8, together with the elastic body straps I4 and elastic shoulder straps ll, permitting the garment to conform with respect to body movements. Y There is no cutting in, binding, or chafing by the parts of the garment.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a garment as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the garment, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:
1. A brassire comprising a pair of breast receiving cups including lapping, adjacent lower 1 corner portions, body straps secured to the cups at their outer side edges, means to connect the body straps together adjacent their initiallyfree ends, a shoulder strap connected betweeneach cup at the top thereof and to one of the body straps intermediate its ends, a continuous bottom edge hem on the brassire formed with and connecting the cups against lateral separation, an elastic in the bottom hem, the ends of the elastic being secured to the ends of said bottom, hem, another continuous hem on each cup about the remaining edges thereof, a separate elastic in each of said other hems, the ends of each of said separate elastics being secured to the ends of the hem in which it is disposed, and an adjustable tie connected between adjacent edges of the cups above said lapping adjacent lower corner portions.
2. A brassire comprising a pair of breast receiving cups including lapping, adjacent lower corner portions, body straps secured to the cups at their outer side edges, means to connect the body straps together adjacent their initially free ends, a shoulder strap connected between each cup at the top thereof and to one of the body straps intermediate its ends, a continuous bottom edge hem on the brassiere formed with and connecting the cups against lateral separation, an elastic in the bottom hem, the ends of the elastic being secured to the ends of said bottom hem, another continuous hem on each cup about the remaining edges thereof, a separate elastic in each of said other hems, the ends of each of said separate elastics being secured to the ends of the hem in which it is disposed, and an ad justable tie connected between adjacent edges of the cups above said lapping adjacent corner portions; all of said hems being gathered.
3. A brassiere comprising a pair of breast receiving cups including lapping, adjacent lower corner portions, body straps secured to the cups at their outer side edges, means to connect the body straps together adjacent their initially free ends, a shoulder strap connected between each cup at the top thereof and to one of the body straps intermediate its ends, a continuous bottom edge hem on the brassiere formed with and connecting the cups against lateral separation, an elastic in the bottom hem, the ends of the elastic being secured to the ends of said bottom hem, another continuous hem on each cup about the remaining edges thereof, a separate elastic in each of said other hems, the ends of each of said separate elastics being secured to the ends of the hem in which it is disposed, and an adjustable tie connected between adjacent edges of the cups above said lapping adjacent corner portions; all of said hems being gathered, and the body and shoulder straps being elastic.
