UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM HOGUE AND JOSEPH R. DAVIS, OF BELLAIRE, OHIO; SAID DAVIS ASSIGNOB OF ONEHALF HIS RIGHT TO O. T. BLACKBURN.
AN UT-` LOC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part `of Letters Patent No. 252,003, dated January 3, 1882. I Application filed May 31, 1881. (o model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known .that we, WILLIAM HOGUE and JOSEPH B. DAVIS, of Bellaire, county of 'Belmont, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'Nut-'Locks of wh ich y `the following is a specification.
Ourinvention relates to improvements in nutlocks for railroad-rails, and the object thereof is to provide suitable means for the better securing of the bolts and nuts more firmly in their placesin such a manner that they will not be apt to loosen very materially whenthe cars are passing over the rails; and the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several part-s thereof', as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective representa-tion of a nut-lock with our improvement attached. Fig. 2 is an elevation `ot' the same. Fig. 3 is a detail referred to.
A A are two `splice pieces or rails of the ordinary construction, and between the flanges of the rails and ruiming longitudinal there- -with are two plates or bars, B B', which are provided with suitable holes, b, for the reception of screw-bolts b', which pass through said holes and secure the plates and rails together by means of nuts C in the ordinary and wellknown manner. Upon each of the end bolts,
b b', which are made longer than the intermediate bolts, are two auxiliary nuts, o o, so
placed on said end bolts, b', as to leave a space between the nuts c o on said bolts and the nuts C O on the same bolts wide enough for the purpose of admitting a keeper, D, to pass freely between them.
D is the keeper, which is somewhat similar to an ordinary gate-latch in construction, and provided with a notch, cl, near its front and curved end; and it has also on its opposite end a projection, d', the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained.
E is a detachable band, rectangular in form, running longitudinally with the rails and fitting over the aforesaid nuts and bolts, and
` which has near the upper -oorners of each end slots e e, through which passes the keeper D,
the keeper and the notch at the other end, to-
gether with the spring F and slots e e in the band E, serving to securely hold the nuts and bolts firmly.
Operation In using our invention, all that is requiredfor the operator to do is to iit the band in its position around and over the nuts and bolts, and u p snugly against the platesB,
and fasten it in position by the keeper D and' spring F, when it is then ready to resist the effect of travelover the rails; and if at any` time it becomes necessary to remove the band for the purpose of taking the rails apart, it can simply and easily be done by pressing the spring upwardly, when the spring disengages with the notch in the keeper and the keeper is then withdrawn lfrom the band, and the band is released from its position 'on the nuts, and the nuts can then be unscrewed andthe rails taken apart, which makes our invention simple, cheap, and durable in its construction.
It is evident that our invention is applicable to other uses than securing fish-plates, and may be applied whenever nuts are to be secured on two or more bolts.
Having thus described our invention, what we'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The band E, provided with the spriin g F and the keeper D, in combination with the bolts b' and b', provided with the nuts O and c, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM HOGUE. JOSEPH B. DAVIS.
