EDMUND J. DARBY AND JAMES SLATER, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNORS OF ONEHALF TO BENJAMIN DONALDSON AND WILLIAM ANDERSON, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
NUT AND BOLT LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,921, dated November 1, 1881.
Application filed July 14, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDMUND JOHN DARBY and JAMES SLATER, both of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, havejointly invented certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Nut- Locks; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to the combination of an inside plate held under the nuts between two bolts, and a notched outside plate inserted between the nuts, said inside plate having tongues bending over slots in the outer plate, whereby the latter is held fixedly and the nuts prevented from turning.
Figure l is an elevation of a rail-joit with our improved nut-lock. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the inner plate, and Fig. 4 aplan of the outer plate, both detached.
A A are the rails, and B the fish-plate, of a rail-joint; O the bolts, and D the nuts, passing through the same in the ordinary manner.
F is an inner plate, having slots G at the ends to receive bolts 0, and over the plate is (No model.)
screwed the nuts D, whereby the plate is held fixedly.
H is an outer plate to fit between the nuts, the upper and lower corners of the plate elongated and provided with notches I in a circular edge, to receive the upper and lower inside corners of the nuts, whereby the plate will suit any angle to which the nutmay be turned. In such position the notched end of the plate will resist the turning of the nuts. Plate His provided with slots J, coinciding with tongues K, slitted from the edge of the plate F, so that by bending the tongues over plate H the two plates will be held firmly together, the nuts holding the plate F from movement.
We claim as our invention- The combination of inner plate, F, having slitted tongues K, and plate H, having slots J and segnientally-notched ends I, the tongues bending over plate H in slots J, as and for the purpose set forth.
