Description

( odeL Y N0. 275,898. Patented, Apr. 17, 1883.
WITNESSES INVENTOR fifl7wmv y I I BY I ATTORNMEVYSI UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN FORD, OF PORTNEUF, PORTNEUF COUNTY, QUEBEC, CANADA.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 275,898, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed July 27, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FORD, of Portneu t, Portneuf county, Quebec, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Nut-Lock, ot'which the following is a fnll, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists ofa not of two parts,
one having a cavity in the face or top eccentric to the bolt-hole and a stud projecting from one corner of the face, together with another part, forming a check-nut by having a boss eccentric to the bolt-hole, and also having a projection or raised part on its face, which shall engage with the stud on the nut first named when the parts are in the non-interlocking position, and can be both together screwed onto the bolt. Then by turning one part of the nut while the other part is not turned the eccentric boss of the one binds in the eccentric cavity of the other nut, thereby locking said nuts on the bolt securely, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a railjoint, showing the fish-plates secured. by my improved locking-nut contrivance. Fig. 2 is a face View of the nut, and Fig. 3 is a back view of the check-nut. Figs. 4, 5 are detail perspective views, the former showing the position of the studs D I when the nuts are ready for being screwed on the bolt, while Fig. 5 shows the position of the two nuts when the check-nut has been turned to lock the cam-- surfaces.
Renewed March 15, 1683.
(Model.) Patented in Canada May 13, 1881, No.11,245.
The nutA has a deep cavity, B, in the face eccentric to the bolt-hole U, and it also has astud, D, projecting from one corner beyond the restofthe face E. The check-nut F has a boss, G, eccentric to the bolt-hole H, and it has a stud, I, to turn against the front of the stud '1).
In order to apply the nuts to the bolt, the check-nut F is placed with its boss in the cavity B, so as to bring the stud I against the stud 1), as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The two are then screwed on the bolt together until nut A is screwed home. Then check-nut F is turned so far as to force the high or broad part of the eccentric boss G through the narrowest part of the eccentric cavity B, thereby binding the nuts laterally against the bolt and causing the parts to interlock, so that they cannot be unlocked except by turning the check-nut back again.
It will thus be seen that the studs I are of great importance in applying the nuts to each other, so that they may be screwed on the bolt.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved nut-lock, consisting of nut A, having eccentric cavity B in it, and stud D on its face, and check-nut F, having eccentric boss G and projection I, said nuts being combined substantially as specified.
JOHN FORD.
