I WATER CLOSET. No. 251,999. I Patented Jan. 3,1882.

,NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN C. DAGGETT, OF NEPONSET, MASS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN B. FARRAR AND ALBERT L. KIMBALL, BOTH OF BRADFORD, MASS.
WATER-CLOSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,999, dated January 3, 1882.
Application filed August 25, 1881. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, JOHN G. DAGGETT, of Neponset, in the count y of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Water-Closets, of which thefollowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention in watenclosets relates to the valve or bowl closing part, and has for its ob- 1o jcct the production of a valve of such shape and so located with relation to the bowl as to effectually exclude the passage of sewergas into a building through the opening in the bowl.
In this my invention I have provided the lower end of the bowl with a valve-seat, and have arranged a slide-valve to co-operate therewith, the said valve and seat being pressed closely together, making an air-tight joint.
The bowl may also have the usual water-seal in addition to the valve.
Figure 1 represents in elevation the bowl and receiver of a closet containing my in vent-ion, the receiver being broken away to more clearly show the working parts; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1 on the dotted line 00 m.
In the drawings I have omitted the woodwork to sustain and surround the bowl, and also the water-pipes and the valve therein,
0 which is opened by lifting the operating-rod a, as such parts are too well known to be herein described, it being understood that the closet will be supplied with water in any usual way each time the rod a is lifted, the said water he- 5 ing in sufficient quantity to wash out the bowl and leave some water in the bowl after therod a has been depressed to shut off the flow of water and close the bowl, said water acting in the usual manner as a water-seal.
The bowl b, of any usual shape, has at its. lower side a concaved metallic valve-seat, 0, ground smooth to receive against it the slidevalve d, in this instance shown as convexed to fit the concaved seat c.' The valve (1 has two 5 lugs,2,one of which is secured to a short piu,3, whilethe otheris secured to the working shaft 0, having an arm, 0, with which is secured the usual operating-rod, a, so that the movement of the said rod turns the shaft 0 and causes the valve d to open or close the valve-seat. This 0 pin 3 and rocker-shaft are supported in bear ing-blocks f, placed in slots in the hangers 4. Each bearing-block rests on an adjusting device, g, shown as a wedge, having a screwa'od,
h, by which to operate it to raise the bearing blocks and maintain close contact between the valve and its seat.
The receiver m, in which the valve and its operating mechanism are placed, is connected with and extended below the bowl, as shown. The outlet on of the receiver will be joined with the house or stand pipe leading to the sewer, and is always opened to permit the contents of the receiver to escape.
As the valve d is turned to permit the con- .65 tents of the bowl to escape all matter adhering to the-top of the valve is scraped or cleared 011' by the edge of the inner opening of the valveseat.
, I claim- 1. The receiver at and its continually-open outlet m, combined with the bowl I), provided with a valve-seat, and the slide-valve co-operating therewith, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The bowl and its valve-seat, combined with the slide-valve co-operating therewith, and the adjusting devices, whereby close contact is maintained between the valve and seat, substantially as described.
3. The bowl provided with the valve-seat, and the valve havinglugs mounted on a rockershaft, combined with the slotted hangers and bearing-blocks for the said shaft, and the adjusting devices and their operating screw-rod, 85 as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN C. DAGGETT.
