CLOSET-FLUSHING VALVE.
Annlication tiled June 9. 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be -it known that I, WALTER Kama', of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Closet-Flushing Valves; and 1 do hereby declare that the `following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanytion hereinafter shown, described and speci'fically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of the invention the single igure shows a sectional perspective of the complete device.
In the drawings, a, a, a, is the main supply-pipe leading water under the usual pressure 0i city mains to the closet bowl, 1 being a valve to control the flow of water therethrough, said valve being operated to open or close by an arm 2.
3 is a cylinder connected at 4 with the supply-pipe a., the passage of water into the c vlinder being controlled by a valve 6 operated by a lever 7 having angular arms 8 and 9, the arm S carrying a ball weight 10 adapted when in lowered position (in full lines) to close the valve 6, 'and when in raised position (in dotted lines) to open said valve to admit water to the cylinder 3. Freely movable in the cylinder is a cupped leather piston 11 supporting a weight 12, and 13 is a piston-rod connected at its lower end to the piston and extending upwardly through the top of the cylinder to permit the attachment thereto of the angular rod 14 connected at its lower end to the arm 2 of the valve 1, and adapted when the piston is elevated by the admission of water to the cylinder to open the valve 1. Leading from the lower end of the cylinder to the closet-bowl, soil-pipe or other suitable receptacle for waste water, is a drainage or discharge tube 15 adapted to slowly discharge the water from the cylinder Specification of Letters Patent.

by the pressure of the weight 12 carried b v the piston, the rate of discharge being regulated by a cock 1G.
17 is a rod connecting with the arm 9 of the valve (i, the upper end having a return bend, the end 18 being adapted when the valve 6 is open to assume a lowered position Z) in the cylinder, so that, when the piston is elevated by the pressure of the water, the upper face of the weight 12 will engage the end 1S and return the valve 6 to closed position.
1n operation, the parts appear in full lines in the drawing as they are before being operated. To flush the closet, the hand lever, chain or other means adapted to raise the ball weight 1() is operated, causing the ball to take the position in dotted lines, and when so raised, the ball is slightly forward of a vertical plane intersecting the axis of its movement, so that, unless means were provided to lower the ball the same would remain in raised position. The ball being raised and the valve G being open, water will discharge from the main supply-pipe a, a to the cylinder, the piston being instantly driven upward thereby, the main valve being consequently opened by the action of the piston, as hereinbefore described, the water being now free te pass through the pipe a, a to the closet. lVhen the piston attains an elevated position in the cylinder, the top face of the weight carried thereby will contact with the end 1S of the rod 17 connecting with the arm 9, and the movement of said rod will carry the ball weight slightly rearward of the plane through its axis of movement, causing it to fall to its original position, the valve 6 being closed as it was before the operation. The passage of water to the cylinder being now shut oil', the water contained in the cylinder will be slowly discharged through the tube 15 by the pressure thereon of the weight carried by the piston, and as the piston regains its lowered position the main valve will again be closed, the interval between the opening and closing of the main valve and the quantity of water passing therethrough and through the supply-pipe a, a to the closet depending upon the rate of discharge through the tube 15 which empties the water from the cylinder.
From the foregoing description, the utility and improved operation of the invention will be apparent.
The operation of the device is practically noisclcss, the usual pounding or vibration accompanying the closing of the valves in devices of this character being entirely eliminated.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1S:-
l. In a closet flushing device, a main supply-pipe, a valve controlling the passage of water therethrough, a cylinder connecting with the supply-pipe, a valve controlling the passage of water into the cylinder, a Weighted piston movable in the cylinder and adapted to be elevated by the admission of water to the cylinder and adapted to be lowered by the weight of the piston discharging the water from the cylinder, a discharge outlet for the water in the cylinder, manual means for admitting water to the cylinder, and means actuated by the movement of the piston for closing the valve admitting water to the cylinder and for successively opening and closing the valve controlling the passage of water through the main supply-pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a closet flushing device, the combination with a main supply pipe provided with an arm-operated valve, of a cylinder connected to said pipe, a leveroperated valve for controlling the passage of water into said cylinder, a weighted piston mounted in said cylinder provided with a pistonrod, a rod connectingsaid piston-rod to said arm-operated valve, and a rod carried by the lever-operated valve adapted to be engaged by said piston, for the purpose described.
3. In a closet liushing device, the combination with a main supply pipe, of a cylinder connected to said pipe, an arm-operated valve for closing said main-pipe, a leveroperated valve for controlling the passage of water into the cylinder provided with angled arms, a weight secured on one of said arms, a Weighted piston arranged in said cylinder provided with a piston-rod, an angled arm connecting the end of said piston-rod to the arm-operated valve, a rod carried by the other arm of the lever-operated valve provided with a return bend extending into said cylinder, and means for regulating the rate of discharge from said cylinder, for the purpose described.
4. In a closet iushing device, the combination with main supply pipe provided with a valve, of a cylinder arranged on saidpipe provided with a valve-controlled discharge tube, a lever-operated valve for controlling the passage of water into the cylinder, a weighted piston arranged in the cylinder provided with a piston-rod, a rod carried by said piston-rod for operating the valve of the main-pipe, and a rod carried by the lever-operated valve adapted to be engaged by said piston for the purpose described.
`In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own I a'HiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
