Description
Aug. 15, 1950 H. c. YOUNG 2,519,095
FISH SCALER Filed March 23, 1948 Patented Aug. 15, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,519,095 FISH SCALER Harleigh C. Young, Washington, D. C.
' Application March 23, 1948, Serial No. 16,489 1 Claim. (01. 17-7) This invention relates to a device for preparing food, and more especially to an instrument for removing the scales from fish.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an instrument of the type described that is of simple construction and is efficient in operation.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an instrument of the type described, provided with scraping edges which may be readily removed for cleaning or renewal.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an instrument of the type described in which the scraping edges consist of a plurality of metal tops which have been removed from carbonated beverage bottles.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the elements to be hereinafter set forth and claimed with the understanding that the elements comprising the invention may be varied in proportion and arrangement without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
In general, the present invention is directed to an instrument for removing the scales from fish. This instrument is provided with a handle and scraping edges to remove the scales from the fish.
The principal feature of the invention resides in the use of metal bottle caps, obtained from carbonated beverage bottles, for use to form the scraping edges of the instrument. These bottle caps are mounted on two parallel rods which extend the length of the instrument. This con-.- struction is highly advantageous because of the small cost of supplying and renewing the scraping edges of this instrument.
y In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an instru.- ment embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the instrument shown in Figure 1. 1
The instrument embodying the present invention which is disclosed in the drawings for purposes of illustration, comprises a back member I to which is attached a handle 2 and a bracket 3 by any suitable means such as the bolts 4. The opposed sides of the bracket 3 are each provided with a pair of equally spaced apertures. This provides two pairs of aligned apertures.
Rods 5 and 6 are provided to extend through these two pairs of aligned apertures. Each of these rods is provided at one extremity with a head 1 and each is secured in position by means of a cotter pin 8.
As best shown in Figure 1, each of these rods is designed to carry a plurality of metal caps 9 which may be obtained from carbonated beverage bottles. A centrally positioned aperture has been made in each of these caps to enable them to be mounted on the rods 5 and 6. It should be noted that the caps are paired, as indicated at l0, by mounting each alternate cap so that it faces a direction directly opposite to the previously mounted cap. This insures that the concave portion of each pair of caps 9 will face each other and thereby insure that the periphery of each pair of caps will form a Sharp cutting edge.
It will be appreciated that this instrument can be readily assembled as soon as the supply of metal bottle caps 9 have been obtained and a centrally positioned perforation has been made in each cap. It is only necessary to place the caps 9 on the rods 5 and 6 in the manner which has been previously described and then secure the rods to the bracket 3 by means of the cotter pins 8. The scales are removed by clasping the fish in one hand and the instrument in the other and rubbing the scraping edges of the instrument against the scales of the fish.
It will be appreciated that this instrument may be readily cleaned by removing the bottle caps 9 from the rods 5 and 6. The scraping edges may also be economically renewed by obtaining additional bottle caps.
I claim:
An instrument for scaling fish comprising a backing member, a handle mounted on one face of the backing member, a bracket mounted on the opposite face of the backing member, a pair of bolts extending through the handle, the backing member and the bracket to join these elements together to form a single unit, a pair of sides on the said bracket positioned at opposed ends thereof, said sides extending away from the backing member, each side being provided with a pair of apertures, the opposed aperture in each flange being in aligned relationship, a rod positioned in each set of aligned apertures in the opposed sides, said pair of rods being in parallel relationship, detachable means to secure the rods in position, a plurality of metal bottle caps, said rods extending through the caps to secure them in position, each of said metal caps having a concave face and a periphery, the concave faces of successive caps facing each other in order that the peripheries of each pair of caps will form a scraping edge.
