FOUNTAIN-PEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,693, dated January 3 1882.

Application filed April 6, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGO BURGKAS, I, of the city of Leipsic, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a full and clear description and specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a longitudinal section of a fountainpen embodying my invention. Fig. II is a bottom view of the same. Fig. III is a side view, partly in section,showing modifications. Fig. IV represents a top view of the pen-holder.

Similar letters represent similar parts in all the figures.

A is a hollow holder, made of any suitable material to contain the desired quantity of ink, closed at the upper end.

B is a cap screwed upon the lower end, and provided with a suitable incisure in its end to receive a usual writing-pen, G. This cap B closes the lower end of the holder A, and is provided with a hole, a, communicating with the hollow part of the holder, and into which a guiding-tube, b, is fastened, capable of being replaced when desired. Into this guidingtube b the ink-distributing tube d is fitted. This tube 01 is provided at its outer end with a spirally-wound spring, a, shaped in such a manner that its extreme end is always in contact with the inner and lower partof the writin g-pen C. By this arrangement the ink from the holder A can pass through the tubed and flow between the windings of the spring a to the Writing-pen 0. Instead of this spiral spring a, a flat spring -made to bear against the inside of the writing-pen may be arranged similar to the flat spring sometimes arranged in a drawing-pen.

On the upper side of the holder A a lever,

D, is arranged, turning on a fulcrum,f. This lever is arranged in a suitable recess made in the holder A, and has its lower end, 6, flattened, upon which the finger, while holding the pen in the act of writing, presses. The other or upper end, 6, of this lever fits under a spring, h, attached to the upper end of the holder A, and which said spring h, when in its normal position, closes an air-hole, m, made in the end of the holder perfectly tight. During the operation of holding the pen-holder, and while writing, the pressure of the finger upon the flattened part c of the lever causes the other end, 6, to lift the springh away from (N0 model.) this air-hole m, thus allowing the admission of air into the hollow part or chamber of the holder A, thereby causing the ink to flow through the distributing-tube 01 into the writing-pen 0. As soon as the action of writing ceases the pressure of the finger upon the plate 0 will stop, and consequently the spring it closes immediately the air-hole m, preventing thereby any further flow of ink into the pen.

The air-hole may be arranged in the top of the holder A, as shown in Fig. III, covered by a suitable spring, and the lever D made to have a slight upward sliding movement as soon as the finger presses upon the flattened end 0 by the arrangement of a conical or inclined surface, a, made on the holder A, and

a corresponding inclined surface made at the under side of the lever 1), whereby the spring which closes the air-hole is lifted upward. (See Fig. Ill.)

Instead of attaching thewriting-pen into a suitable incisure made in the cap B, a usual metal holder, N, Fig. III, may be placed upon this cap B to fasten the writing-pen to.

When not in use the pen 0 is incloscd by a cap, P, made conical at its lower end, and provided with a small hole, 20, to be used as a funnel for filling the hollow holder A with ink when required.

From the nature of the ink or writing-fluid, the distributing-tube d and springa, through which the ink flows to the pen, and which naturally require to be made very small, will easily corrode or will be choked up.

By the arrangement and construction above described these parts can easily be cleaned or replaced when required, similar to the writingpen.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
