Description

(No Model.) N. SWOLD.
REOEPTAGLE FORPACKING CAKE 0R BAR SOAP. No. 251,577. Patented Dec. 27,1881.
A, Ffgl.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
NORMAN W. GRISWOLD, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE ROYAL SOAP COMPANY, OF CALIFORNIA.
RECEPTACLE FOR PACKING CAKE OR BAR SOAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,577, dated December 2'7, 1881,
Application filed November 23, 1880. (No model.)
State of California, have made and invented a new and useful Improvement in Receptacles for Packing Cake or Bar Soap; and Ido.hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs.
- The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in receptacles for packing cake or bar soap; and it consists in providing the cover or lid thereof upon its under side with ventilating-apertures, substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
In the drawings referred to, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a case or receptacle having bars .or cakes of soap therein, and which are of a length equal to the depth of the receptacle. Fig. 2 shows a case or receptacle for cakes of smaller size, a double row of the same being packed in the receptacle.
The kinds of soap to which my improvement is more particularly applicable are the square and rectangular bars of commerce.
To carry out my invention 1 use a case or receptacle, A, either of circular or oval form, like a pail or tub, and of the same general construction, so as to be watertight; and for convenience in handling I shall provide a bail or handle, as at a, Fig. 2. The depth of the receptacle will be usually governed by the length of the bars to be put upthat is, when long bars are to be put up the receptacle is to be deep enough to receive and hold the bars up- 7 rightly or on end, but with shorter bars or between the bars, and then a second ring, E, is laid inside of-and againstthe circle or ring last laid, and to break joints, as it were, with the bars of the first ring, and so on until the face is all filled with the soap. When this case or receptacle A is thus packed or filled with the soap it is closed by using a lid, head,
or cover, f, which is secured in place by means of suitable fastenings, and vents or apertures g are left and provided at and around the edges of the cover for securing access of air to the contents of the receptacle. No amount of handling, as in carting and transporting this package, will disturb the position of the bars.
The advantages derived from the application and use of my improvement are very great. Packages of this form, when piled or stacked in store orduring transportation, cannot be placed so closely together as to shut off the access of air to and its circulation through the contents of each individual package. The desired ventilation of the soap is thus insured and its perfect curing effected while in package. The contents of such packages are not affected by exposure to the weather and changes of climate or temperature. The packages themselves are of a desirable and convenient form for handling, shipping, and storing, to the merchant, shipper, and consumer, and the packages are not liable tobe broken and destroyed during transportation and, finally, a saving both in the contents of the package and in the timeandlaborconsumedin handling is effected by the use of my improvement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a circular or oval formed receptacle for packing cake or bar soap, of a lidor cover having upon its under side ventilating-apertures at the edges thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand.
