This invention relates in` general to 'alockalarm combination and has as one of its objects the provision of an efficient, practical, economical combined closure fastener andalarm which is operable by the closure fastener when lthe door is being opened against the pull of the fastener.
It is a further object ofthe present invention to combine a chain-doorfastener with an alarm such that an attempt to `open the door will cause the chained bolt to slide a plate and effectuate thereby the ringing of an alarm. I
Heretofore, it has been the practice to employ a bent wire operable by the movement of the chained bolt to cause a bell to ring. However, it has been found that such a device is not efficient and positive in its action. `By'providing a sliding plate having a cam which makesdirect contact with the stem of a bell," the heretofore existing disadvantages havebeen overcome'.
The above and other objects and yadvantages of the invention will appear as thedescription proceeds, it being understood, however, that it is not intended that 'the invention be limited to the exact details described'herein whichillustrate the preferred mode of carrying' out the invention; and it is intended that there be included as part of the invention, suchl obvious changes and modifications thereof 'as wouldioccur to a person skilled in the art to which this invention pertains and which would `fa'll in the scope of the claims.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is disclosed a door III and a frame member II opposite the free side I2 of the door; the door being hinged at its opposite side in the usual manner. Secured to the frame member I I by means of screws I4 is an anchor plate I5 having at its upper end a slot I6. Secured to plate I5 as by means of a looped member I'I is a chain I8 to which is pivoted, by means of another loop s claims.j (o1. 11e- 14) 2 member I9, a bolt v having an'annular groove 2|. The recess or slot I6 as 'adapted to receive vthe bolt 20 when the latter is not in use to fasten the door. Secured to door I0 opposite plate I5 by meansof screws is a frame 26` having a perimetric flange 2'I whereby to provide a space 29 between the front 28 of the frame and the door. Operable within the said space 29 is a 'slide plate 30 having a substantially wing-shaped cam slot 3l. The `ends of cam slot 3| project downwardly and slightly inwardly as indicated at 32a and 32D and from these ends the slot curves downwardly towards its center forming a concavity 33. Directly above concavity 33 the slot is arched as indicated at 34, so that the center portion of the slot is suiiiciently largeto accommodate the forward reduced portion 20a of the bolt 20 in order that the latter may project in the slot 3l, with the head portion 20h of bolt 20 projecting outwardly and the channel or groove 2I of bolt 20 adapted to ride on the perimetric wall of slot 3|. Slide plate 30 has an offset lug or like `projection 35 extending from the center portion of its upper edge 36. Lug 35 projects through a slot or opening 31 of frame member 26, slot 31 being slightly longer than the lug 35l to permit longitudinal movement thereof. Lug 35has a cam face 38 substantially V-shaped. Secured to a bracket 39 extending above frame 26 and by means of rivets 40 or the like is a conventional bell or alarm 4I having a stem or pin 42 projecting Adownwardly therefrom. Stem 42 slides in a sleeve 43. The upper end of stem 42 engages a member 44 of the conventional bell-ringing `mechanism (not seen) ,l while the lower end of stem 42 is providedwith a slotted head 45, the
`slot of which engages the cam face 38 of lug 35. lTheoperation of the device is as follows: Abe assumed that it is desired to bolt the door in Let it its `closed position as seen in Fig. 1; thenthe bolt 2li is inserted inthe slot 3l through the enlarged center opening `O thereof and slidV to the left -alongfthe slot, the said bolt finding itself at the .downwardly projecting end 32a thereof. In an attempt toiopen the `door against the pull of the and yet keep the door bolted, then the bolt 20 is shifted into the end 32h of the slot. Now, if an attempt is made, say by an intruder, to force open the door beyond that limited by the length of the chain, then the plate will again be caused to slide by the bolt 20 in the manner heretofore described. The lug 35 is provided with two inclined surfaces which form the V-Shaped cam so that the closure fastener together with its alarm may be employed at either the right or the left of the anchor plate I5.
The shape of slot 3| permits the bolt or Stud 2i! to be shifted from end 32a to end 32h to lengthen the chain I8 and thereby permit a person within the house to peek through the space between the slightly-opened door and the frame member Il. The slot 3l is undercut as shown by the numeral 32. This undercut is particularly provided at the downward-projecting ends 32a, 32h of slot 3| producing a wedging action with the bolt or stud `2l) to prevent the latter from accidently slipping outl of the particular end it engages and sliding along the entire slot or falling out of the slot as it passes the enlarged central portion O. As clearly seen, the slot 3l substantially diverges from its central portion and its projections 31a, Sib are not only downwardly directed but, as heretofore stated, are inwardly directed to prevent the stud or bolt 29 from sliding up therefrom and along slot 3l. The ends 30a of sliding plate member 30 which project beyond slot 3i are adapted to abut against the respective rearwardly-directed end walls 27 of frame 26, thus limiting the sliding movement of plate member 3l). It is apparent that the device may be employed with either a right-handed hinged door or a lefthanded hinged door.
From the foregoing description taken in con-- nection with the accompanying drawing, it is .apparent that an improved, simple, practical and inexpensive device for the purpose intended is provided. It is apparent however that immaterial changes and modifications may be made by skilled persons without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention as outlined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a combined closure-fastener and signalling device, the combination of a closure fastener comprising a slidable member, means for operably mounting said member on a door, said member having a cam element attached thereto and having a slot in said member, a flexible member, means for securing said ilexible member to a structural part adjacent said door, a stud connected to said flexible member, said stud being slidably held in said slot to shift said slidable member when a pull is exerted on said exible member, and signalling means having a movable 'projection for actuating the signal, said projection being in position for engagement with said cam element to be moved thereby.

3. In a combined closure-fastener and signalling device according to claim 1 wherein said cam element where it is engaged by said projection is substantially V-shaped.
4. In a combined closure-fastener and signalling device, the combination according to claim 1 wherein the slot in Said slidable member comprises a central portion and two portions substantially diverging from said central portion, said diverging portions having means in the ends thereof acting as respective abutments for the stud when the latter is inserted in said slot, to detachably hold the same in the slidable member to cause said member to be pulled by the stud.
5. In a. combined closure-fastener and signalling device according to claim 4 wherein said stud has a groove adapted to ride on the perimetric wall of said slot and said central portion of said slot is enlarged to accommodate the forward part of said stud, and wherein said means in the ends of the slot are downwardly and inwardly-directed to form a shoulder for detachably holding the stud in said slidable member to cause said member to slide.

In a combined closure-fastener and signalling device, the combination oi a slidable member, means for operably mounting said member on a door, said member having a cam element and a slot, a flexible member, means for securing said ilexible member to a structural part adjacent said door, a bolt connected to said flexible member, Said bolt being adapted to be slidably retained in said slot and to slide said slidable member when a pull is exerted on said iiexible member, signalling means having a reciprocatable projection, said projection being in engagement with said cam element, said means for mounting said slidable member comprising a frame providing a space between it and said door for'sliding movement of said slidable member.
7. In a combined closure-fastener and signalling device according to claim 6 wherein said frame has rearwardly-directed end walls limiting the sliding movement of said sliding member.
8. In a combined closure-fastener and signalling device according to claim 6 wherein said cam element Where it is engaged by said projection has a V-shaped face.
