, 4An-objectof this inventionistovprovide alight weighifreel of` simple and inexpensive construcl.tion having a high degree vof strength and-dura-r bility commensurate ywith its weight. V
' In-accordancewith oneembodimento. thexinventiOn, pa. reel `is providedhavingf a cylindrical drum1tofwhich-isfwelded, ateach'end thereof, an wannularlyshaped -hoilow head comprising an' in- I ner annular member: .having/an outer lperipheral `yange rnundedfoutwardly :to abutwlantlnwardly extending..innerrperipheral ange of an` louter dish-,shaped annular 4member having aninner annular v,flange rounded 1 inwardly- .to a point substantially .in Lline. with: the, abutting outer peripheral dianges ofi the,` two members andithen-extended straight toabutfthe inner annularedge 'off the "nrst member, which isdisposed at rightl tangles thereto, the two members being ffcontinuously welded `together at their outer and'inner :lines of' juncture and similarly welded to the @periphery :of the drum attwo spacediines vof welding, one of the 4latter vlines of welding being .substantially inflinewith the outer peripheral-line of welding of the abutting lflanges `of "the two members.
Otherobjects; and features of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed de scription taken in conjunctionvwith the accomfpanying drawing, in which:
Fig, 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a reel embodying theufeatures of the invention;
Fig; 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional'view-taken-on the line 2-2 of Fig. A3; and
Fig. 3'isV a fragmentary end elevational Aview of the reel.
Referring to the drawing, it will be observed that a reel embodying the features of the present invention comprises a pair of heads Ill-I0 secured to oppositeends of a straight cylindrical drum I I having, in the present embodiment, open ends,y the drum being formed from a sheet of metal cut to theproper size and rolled into a cylinder with its edges abutting and welded together, as` indicated at I2. The reel is of all metal constructionand may be used to support cable or other strand material which is wound upon the drum II.
` Each of the reel heads I0 comprises annularly shaped inner and outer sheet metal members I3 and I4, respectively, the members being so shaped and cooperating when assembled and fixed to each other to form a hollow head, .as clearly shown in Fig, 2. The inner member I3 has its outer peripheral yportion bent outwardly and rounded to formv a s-ilange I'I which .extends from a main flat portion i8. Spaced `from and parallel to the main flat portion I8 of the member I3 isaamain ilat portion lI9 of the outer member I4,
`which hasn its outer peripheral portion bent in- Wardly and rounded to form a flange 20 which, yat its edge, meets the corresponding'edge of the `:flange I' of the inner `member I3. `The flanges Iland 2li of themembers I 3 and I4, respectively,
.'have'thelr opposed `edges abutting and thus cooperate to form an annular lrim having arounded yor `semi-,circular cross-section at its' periphery,
the ,members being welded together where `their annular flange edges abut t0 form a continuous yweld2l.
`Atgits inner peripherallportion, the outer member I4 .is bent inwardly and rounded to form a flange'tz 4which extends from its main flat portionA la to a` point 2.4 substantially in line with the welded annular ange edges of the members i3 and I4. `From this `point 24, the Yflange 22 .extends straigh'ttor parallel to the axis of the drum ,'I l and ,inV abutting `relationship with the yperipheral surface of the drum and also with the inner peripheral edge surface of the inner Amember I3 withits annular end edge terminat- :ing with the plane of the inner surface of the Vnianilat portion I8 of the member I3.
The point 24 of the flange 22, inaddition to being inwalignment with l:the welded ange edges, is substantially v`in alignment with the annular'end I erige` of the drum Il( At the juncture of the flange 22 `chtite-member` I4, with the inner `peripheraledge :surface of the inner member I3, the'headmembers land I4 are welded together 'and also tothe Yperipheral surface of the drum I I to form a continuous weld 25. Each head I0 is also welded to the outer peripheral edge of the drum II to form a continuous weld 2B.
From the above description of the outer head member I4, it will be apparent that it is of annular dish-shaped formation with its inner ange 22 of greater depth than its outer flange 20, whereby it may abut and be continuously welded at 425 tothe inner annular edge of the main flat portion I8 of the inner head member I3 and to the drum II. This arrangement, taken with the continuous weld 2| provided at the annular abutting outer peripheral edges of the flanges I1 and 20 of the two head members, results in a reel provided with hollow light-weight heads having a high degree of strength commensurate with v other t provide a single unobstructed space irl-,-
the head and having outer peripheral flanges directed toward and abutting each other at their edges, said members having plane surfaces` "for the having an inner peripheral Bange engaging the "to" abut the inner peripheral/edge of the inner member, the'm'embers'being bonded together at their abutting lines of juncture and to the periphery of said drum at the juncture of said straight portion of the outer member with the inner peripheral edge of the inner member and the outer I member 't6 theperiphery of said drum at its angreater portions of the areas, said outer member periphery of and being secured to said drum and abutting the inner peripheral edge of the inner -nular end fedge surface.
'reelcomprising a cylindrical metal drum having open ends land annular hollow heads at opposite ends 4of said drum, each of said heads member, the members being bonded togetherlat i their abutting lines of juncture. i
