For example, coats ed ithz l pa fiel: reh q ni p u ar for very cold weather: This liningniaterial ,charac-' terizedbyits lightness, warmthrtaining and insulating qualities. Another lining material, a patented fabric soldunder the trade mark Sunbak, is a lining having 'el'smoo'th face'a'nd warmth retaining woolback which is used in'many types of garments. This lining enhances the beauty of the coat and provides in one thickness of material both a lining and an interlining. Fur is also e ployed as a lining, as are other suitable ma'terials, forinstance; suede,
"Various kinds 'of coats are currently made and sold, which'are rovided withdetachable and separable linings, for adapting the coat to varying temperature changes, but heretofore there has not been provided a unitary lining ensemble having means which can be sewn or otherwise attached to a coat with the said supplementary lining used thereafter and detached at will.
It is an object of the invention to provide a unitary, supplementary lining having means for facile separable attachment to any coat, toadapt the coat to colder weather than that for which it was originally designed. It is another principal object to provide a lining having means for separable attachment to a plurality of coats, if desired. Another object is the provision of a coat lining which may be made of a wide range of materials, for xample, wool back satin, called Sunbak, alpaca pile, wool, or fur, so that the user may interchange linings at will in different coats as the weather changes. Thus for a minimum of expense, one is enabled to comfortably surmount various weather variations.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the disclosure in the drawing and description herein.
3 Claims. (01. 2-996) his invention relates to a supplemental lining In the drawings:
Fig. 115a none view of the supplemental g: W 2 illustrates a fragmentary View of the slide fastenerattachment. Fig. 3 is a' rr'ag'memary enlarged view of the means for concealment of the slide fastener. I Fig; eis'a s'ectioriallenlarge'd) "View along the lines 4-4 of Fig, lsh'owing' the complete cover mg or concealm'eneofthe slide'fastener'between the outer garment andthe supplementary lin- The supplementary lining IE2 comprises separable lining I I 'b'estjshownin Fig. 1, pr o'videdat its outer marginal" edges" with conventional slide fastener having k'zo'in'plemental "slide" fastener teeth 'elements lz, I3, gripping respectively, the slide fastener strips I 4, l5 and h'avingslider IB'fo'r closing and opening "the fastenerand for separatingliniiig' I" from its cooperating" parts. Lining II is preferably turnedunder at its edgesand sewn oro'therwise secured to'strip I4 as at:- H -'andlit' contemplated that said lining may" be of any m'aterialwhich ha's,inherently, warmth retaining qualities. For example, the patentedmateriarsom under the trade mark Siifibakis one material admirably suited.
I Sunbak, ashereinbei'orestated, has-the smooth face of the conventional lining and a wool back, combined in one material. Other materials may be alpaca pile, for extremely cold weather, wool, or any fabric made entirely or in part of natural or artificial fibers which insulate, but preferably, do not add any considerable weight. Fur, suede, or leather may also be used.
An important feature of the present invention lies in the provision of flap I B, suitably attached as atv I9, by sewing to strip I5, said flap having a dual purpose. First, it is a means of securing the strip I5 and fastener element I3 to the lining of the coat to be converted and second, it covers the fastener elements I2, I3 and strips I4, l5 when lining II is attached to the coat, and covers element It and strip I5 when lining II is detached. As admirably shown in Fig. 4 flap I8 is adapted to be attached to the material 29 of the coat to be converted, so that the said flap covers the cooperating members of the slide fastener and their adjacent strips.
It is contemplated that removable white thread or dot and dash marking 2I may be provided along flap I3, along which directional line the 3 flap may be sewn to the material of the coat (not shown) to be modified.
Flap l8 preferably assumes the form of a ribbon member as disclosed in Figs. 3 and 4 or it may be of double thickness, (not shown) as desired.
Supplementary lining may be provided with a plurality of outer fastener elements [3, strips l5 and flaps l8 so that the flaps may be sewn or affixed to the linings of several coats and lining l I used with any one of the modified coats when desired.
I propose that supplementary lining I0 shall be manufactured and sold as a unit, with at least one complete slide fastener slider and'covering flap, or a plurality, as described in the paragraph.
above. Thus, for the nominal cost of one extra lining, several coats of the wardrobe may be converted or expeditiously modified for colder weather.
The slide fastener teeth elements are shown terminating short of the bottom of lining H, for ,I have found that the lining when made this way does not rumple. If desired, however, the slide fastener may be extended all the way to the bottom.
Any coat of a wardrobe, whether long or short,
suitcoat or topcoat for spring, fall or winter may be converted or modified by employing my supplementary lining.
It is merely necessary to sew flap l8 to the material of the coat to be converted, along the thread or marking 2| and lining ll may'thereafter be inserted or removed with despatch, making the modified coat comfortable to wear in colder weather than that for which the garment was originally designed.
' The supplementary lining can be manufactured at nominal cost, from readily available materials, and can be made and sold at a figure within the budget of many who could not otherwise afford a coat designed to be comfortable in really cold weather.
The above disclosure should be understood as illustrative only and not by way of limitation since changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The material may be changed; buttons or fastening means other than a slide fastener may be employed; means other than sewing may be used.
The right is reserved to make such changes or modifications as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A supplemental garment lining for converting a coat, comprising a lining provided at its outer marginal edges with complemental slide fastener parts and strips, one of said strips being attached to the lining, the other strip carrying a flap provided with markings whereby upon application of the lining to a coat to be converted, said markings may be followed to sew the lining to a coat.
2. A supplemental garment lining for converting a coat, comprising a lining provided at its outer marginal edges with complemental slide fastener parts with attached strips, one of said strips sewn to the said lining, the other strip sewn to a flap provided with a directional marking spaced from and along one marginal edge of said flap whereby upon application of the lining to a coat, the lining may be sewn thereto along the directional marking.
3. A supplemental garment lining for converting a garment, comprising a lining with warmth retaining qualities provided at its outer marginal edges with complemental slide fastener parts with attached strips, one of said strips sewn to the said lining, the other strip sewn to the outside of a single thickness of material in the form of an elongated flap of the same length as the complemental slide fastener parts, the elongated fiap provided with directional marking along one marginal edge thereof whereby the flap may be sewn to the material of the inside of a coat along said directional marking with the inside of the single thickness of material contiguous the material of the inside of the coat.
