GAR COUPLING. No. 251,366. Patented Dec. 27,1881.
FIGLQ.
will!!! FIGI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL KEETHLER, OF MOUNT OREB, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,366, dated December 2'?, 1881.
Application filed July 21, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL KEETHLEE, of Mount Oreb, Brown county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The tirst part of my improvements comprises a novel combination of sheave and crossed ropes or chains, whereby the coupling-pin can be raised without compelling the coupler to pass in between the cars, as hereinafter more fully described.
The second part of my invention consists in journaling the aforesaid sheave in a pair of standards projecting from the top of the drawhead, the front surface of the rear standard being so inclined or sloped as to guide the T-head of the coupling-pin directly into a recess in said draw-head, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, the link being shown in the act of entering the draw-head. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the upper part ofthe coupling, taken in the plane of the T-head of the pin.
The draw-head A is provided with a customary haring mouth, B, that opens into the chamber of said head, the side walls, O O', of this chamber being concaved, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2. The roof D of this concave chamber slopes, as seen in Fig. 1, and is grooved or hollowed out at E to permit free backward swing of the coupling-pin F, which latter device has a Tshaped head, G, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3. Attached to this head G is one end of a rope or chain or other flexible connection, H, which, after passing over a sheave or roller, I, is carried out to the side of the car, and has its other end secured in any suitable manner. H' is another cord or chain, applied in a similar manner, but extending to the opposite sideof the car. Roller I is journaled on a bolt, J, or on a pin capable of being readily removed, said pivot being applied to two standards, K K', projecting upwardly from the draw-head A. The rear side of the front standard, K, is recessed at L, to admit the head G of the pin F, and thereby prevent the latter being jolted out of the drawhead.
The oor N 'of the concave chamber slopes rearwardly, as shown, and is grooved or hollowed out at Oto allow the piu F to swing therein.
v .P is an ordinary coupling-link.
When my coupling is in its normal position the head G enters the recess L, and thus prevents any accidental disengagement of the pin F by the jolting of the cars or otherwise. As soon, however, as it is desired to disengage the link P the coupler has only to pull on either of the cords H or H', which act launches rearwardly the lhead G, on account of the front surface of standard K' being inclined in the manner shown in Fig. l. Consequently the pin F is at once disengaged from said link, and without compelling the coupler to enter between the cars, and thereby endanger his life. When the link P first enters, the head G turns in its recess or socket L and allows the pin F to swing rearwardly up into the slot E; but as soon as the link is in position said pin swings down intothe slot O and is at once ready for anystrains that may be brought to bear against it. In case the link should enter in the oblique manner represented in Fig. 2, the concave wall O will guide said link properly and cause it to take such a path as to insure its engagement with the pin F; or practically the same results may be effected by forming the walls of said chamber with obtuse angles, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a vertically-shil'table coupling-pin, the roller I and crossed chains or ropes H H', for the purpose specified.
2. ln combination withacoupling-pin, F G, operating ropes or chains H H', and roller I J, the standards K K', of which the front surface of standard K' slopes in the manner shown, and for the purpose stated.
3. An improved draw-head, consisting of the mouth B, concave chamber C C' D N, grooves E O, swinging pin F G, crossed ropes or chains H H', sheave I, standards K K', and recess L, which latter receives the head G of said pin, as herein described and set forth.V
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL KEETHLER.
