Application February 26, 1945, Serial No. 579,788
3 Claims. (Cl. 131--186) My invention relates to an improvement in cigarette and cigar holders, particularly regarding a means for elevating the end of the holder when it contains a lighted cigarette or cigar at such time it is laid on a table top or other surface, so as to prevent damage from the burning tobacco.
A further object of my invention is to eliminate the affected taste of a cigarette or cigar resulting from tobacco burning in contact with an ash tray or other surface upon which it has been laid while burning.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved cigarette and cigar holder which is simple and easy to manipulate and use.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved cigarette and cigar holder of such a design that the general appearance and lines of the holder will remain as nearly as possible in keeping with the accepted standards.
. A stil1 further object of my invention is to provide an improved cigarette and cigar holder along lines of simplicity which will lend itself to fast and economical manufacture.
With the above objects in view, and any others which may suggest themselves from the description to follow, a better understanding of the invention may be had by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cigarette and cigar holder.
Fig. 2 is a front view with the legs extended.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a bottom horizontal view.
Figures 5 and 6 are sectional views taken respeotively on the lines 5--5 and 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Ordinarily smokers have a great deal of difliculty when circumstance make it necessary for them to momentarily lay down a smoke. In many instances an ash tray is not handy and in other instances a great many smokers are sensitive to the change in taste if their smoke burns in contact with an ash tray or other surface.
Another factor which I have taken into consideration is the practicability of an improvement to eliminate the above discomforts. In doing this I have invented an improved cigarette and cigar holder which has not eliminated any of the advantages of the convenional holder, but have introduced an added feature which is simple, convenient and easy to use. The drawing shows a cigarette holder having a body 8, provided with a mouth piece 9 at one end, and a cigarette supporting bore or opening I0, at the other end. A central bore I I, extends from the opening I Il through the mouth piece 9. The holder may be supported on a plane surface by the mouth piece 9 and two legs, I, and 2. These legs I and 2 may be actuated by an arm 3, movable in a recess or slot 5 which has its axis off-set from the axis of the holder and the opening IIJ.
The legs I and 2 and the arm 3 are, as shown, in fact parts of a single detail made of spring like material, such as, but not necessarily spring wire formed to the shape desired. When the legs are required for use the arm 3 which extends through the longitudinal slot 5 can be pushed forward in the slot to extend the legs at which time they will spring to their formed shape. When the legs are withdrawn into the longitudinal openings formed by channels 6 and 1 and cavity 4, the spring like material of which the legs are made will adjust itself to the channels and cavity.
While I have described the invention along specific lines, various minor changes or refinements may be made therein without departing from its principle, and I desire to consider all such changes and renements as coming within the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A holder for cigarettes comprising a body having one end arranged to support a cigarette, said body having an opening extending longitudinally from said end and terminating in a longitudinal slot, and a pair of spring legs mounted in said opening and having an actuating portion extending through said slot whereby said legs may be extended or withdrawn, said legs being formed with a curvature so as to diverge and curve away from the longitudinal axis of said holder when extended thereby to support in elevated position one end of said holder while supporting therein a cigarette, and said legs when withdrawn being located within said opening in a straightened substantially linear position.
2. The combination comprising a cigarette holder having a mouthpiece at one end and a cigarette supporting opening at the other end, said holder having a recess having its axis ofset transversely from said opening, a pair of inherently curved resilient legs reciprocally supported in said recess, and means for moving said legs into and out of said recess, said legs when moved out of said recess extending beyond said cigarette supporting opening and being adapted 1 holder together with a cigarette.
3. The combination comprising a cigarette holder having a central bore extending from a mouthpiece to a cigarette supporting end, said body having a longitudinally extending openingwith its axis offset from the axis of said holder, a, pair of resilient supporting legs mounted in said opening so as to be substantially within said body when retracted, said legs when extended curving away from each other and away from the axis of said holder in a predetermined manner, and means extending from within'said opening to the exterior of said body for moving said legs 15 Number in a reciprocable manner in said opening.
