Description

A. J. FRANCK ENVELOPE OR JACKET FOR THE SAFE June 20, 1950 STORAGE 0F PHONOGRAPH RECORDS Filed Nov. 21, 194e www Eri J Patented June 20, 1950 Appncann Novenibe 21,194s,seriainp7ii,gg zu, lclaim. (01,229;'ggg-furlL i adapted to' contain disc rtype Iphonograph records and similar articles. j' Envelopes'of this type are generally made of relatively heavy paper and are intended to prol, tect the .record and provide support thereforywhen in? general was l caused 'by the glued fiaps..=' tabs orfol'dover's by which the two -side Walls of the envelope-Were secured together.` A
Records stored in such envelopes or jackets do not receive uniform support over the entire area of both sides, and moreover are subject to local stresses which may warp the record. For instance if records are stacked horizontally in the envelopes or jackets heretofore available, the weight of superimposed recordsis concentrated over the areas of multiple paper thickness along the marginal edge portions and often down the center of the envelope or jacket. This subjects the adjacent areas of the records to greater pressure than that which obtains over the balance of the record. The same is true of records stored or led vertically under the desirable supporting pressure achieved by iirm stacking.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide an envelope or jacket particularly adapted for the storage of phonograph record discs, which has uniform thickness over the entire surface of either face of the enclosed record thereby precluding the objectionable consequences of storing or filing records in the envelopes or jackets heretofore available.
,. This ,invention relates. tofenvelo-pes or jackets ""f" thefen'velope is'made.. l l l i As Vwill 'tbe' readily 'apparent 'frornfreference' to the accompanying drawing in which like numeri beingy brokeiiaway' to illustrate structural details; -f -f i.; riti f HE'i'gfureZis alplan view yof the als indicate like' parts, the 'envelope is made` from a on'e' p'iec e.v blankof paper" or yother suitable flexible',sheet jmaterial. This, blankVA comprises a main'b'ody'lportion l of a size determined bythe diameter' of th'e 'record'f'or which 'the envelopeor `jacket is designed, twol opposed 1side lnaps and `3 and a' cover 'flap' 4. The two lopposed',l side flaps 2, and`3 have av combined area substantially equal toi that'of the main lbody, portion I'Lsfo that ,when tiifsi'de naps areglfoidedalons',the'oppesite marginalv edges `5` 'and VV6, and vdisposedover the body portion, their adjacent edges are contiguous. The adjacent edges of the flaps 2 and 3 should be as close together as possible in production,
the bottom edge 'l of the body With the aboveand other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one complete example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a record envelope embodying this invention, parts thereof but they must not overlap.
The third or cover flap 4 which is co-extensive in area with the body portion I and the combined area of the iiaps 2 and 3 is folded along portion, and disposed over the iiaps 2 and 3.
Along the three exposed marginal edge portions of the flap 4 as well as along a central area thereof, a suitable adhesive 8 is applied prior to folding over the flaps. Hence,- when the flap 4 is folded over the fiaps 2 and 3 it may be adhered thereto to secure the flaps together and form one side wall of the envelope. One side wall of the envelope thus consists of the single thickness body portion l while the other side Wall has a double thickness throughout the entire area thereof.
Inasmuch as the body portion I is of uniform thickness throughout, and as all of the aps are of uniform thickness, the covering or side Wall over each side of a record R received in the envelope is of uniform thickness across the entire area of the record.
Attention is directed to the fact that the side Walls of the envelope have no cut outs or windows, for even these permit deformation of the record. Such cut-outs or windows also cause objectionable catching of one envelope by the other, the tearing or peeling of envelopes and the accumulation of destructive dirt on exposed parts of the records.
' In lieu of the windows customarily provided in record envelopes to permit the label on the record to be viewed, the outer face of the envelope may be provided with suitably imprinted pressure on the opposite faces thereof, and at.
the same time must be supported against deformation by elevated temperaturesc; land that this invention achieves these vpurposes through the provision of an envelope; .in .which Ieach of the two side walls has uniform through its entire area.
What I claim as my invention isz A phonograph record jacket adapted to ,K
snugly receive a phonograph record therein through an open .edge thereof comprising: a substantially square "frontwall 'of uniform thickness throughout its entire area and having straight edges and square `corners; 'a two-ply back .wall of uniform thickness 'throughoiitfits entire area and of the .same size and shape as said `front wall and joined thereto along 'three complete marginal edges of the jacket, said twoply 'hack 'wall comprising flaps folded in -from said threemarginal edges ofthe frontwa'll, one 'of the flaps being o' the same size and shape Vas Vthe front wall and comprising one entire ply of said two-ply 'back' wall, and the remaining "flaps together having an area equal to thatof the front wall and being coplan'ar 'with their 'adjacent edges abutting so that together 'they 'form the other ply -o'f said 'two-jply back fwall;
and adhesive securing portions of the juxtaposed surfaces of the plys of the two-ply back .Wall together, said adhesive covering the unhinged marginal edge portions of the full sized flap and the portion thereof in juxtaposition to the abutting marginal portions of the other two naps, the unjoined edges of lthe single ply front Wall @and the itwoply haci;vv iwallbeing directly opposite each other and constituting the boundary of the open edge of the envelope through which sthe record is inserted and removed, so that the .frontwahras-Well as the back wall is of uniform thickness 'throughout the entire area of the .envelope Vto assure against localized pressure 'uponlairfecordfin the jacket when such jacketed record is clamped between two parallel flat survTimes. v
