COMBINED PIN AND CLASP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,254, dated December 20,

Application filed September 15,1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUGENIA H. LECOUR, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Combined Pin and Clasp, of which the following is a specification.

This article is especially intended to be attached to the front of a ladys dress or outer garment, and to have secured to it the two ends of a ribbon, which may be passed through a mufl' and serve to support the same when the ladys hands are withdrawn from it and otherwise engaged; but itmay be used for other purposes.

The invention consists, essentially, in the combination of a snap body or case having at one end a loop or equivalent provision for the attachment of one end of a ribbon, a remov' able tongue fitting in the otherend of said body or case, and secured by a snap catch, and having a loop or similar provision,for the attachment of the other end of the ribbon. and a brooch-pin secured to the back of said body or case to enable itto be attached to adress, cloak, or other article.

Fig. 2 represents a front view of the body or case and tongue, upon a larger scale, with the tongue partly withdrawn from the body or loop. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section on the dotted line or m, Fig. 2, with the tongue wholly inserted in the body or case, and secured by its snap-catch; and Fig. 4 represents an end view of the body or case.

Similar letters of reference designate correspondiug parts in all the figures.

A designates the hollow body or case'of the clasp, which is made of any suitable metal, and plated, decorated, or embellished by any suitable ornamentation. The said body or case has at one end a loop, a which may be formed from the piece of metal which constitutes the back wall of the body or case A.

' B designates the tongue of the clasp, which is composed of a flat piece of metal having in one end a loop, a, similar to the loop a, and

having its opposite end portion bent over so as to form a snap or spring catch, b. The tongue B is adapted to be inserted into a slot, 0, in

the end of the body or case A, opposite to the loop a, and the slot 0 has in one side a recess, 0, into which fits a log, d, projecting from the catch b. When the tongue B is pushed into the body or case A the snap-catch I) is deflected until its end passes into the body or case, when it springs away from the tongue and is held in place by its end abutting against the inner side of the end of the body or case. When the tongue B is to be withdrawn the thumb is applied to the lug d to press the catch 1) toward the tongue B,aud the tongue may then be withdrawn.

To the back of the body or case is secured an ordinary brooch pin, 6, by which the clasp may be secured to the fl out of a dress or cloak, ortoanyotherarticle. Thepinemaybe hinged, as here shown, or coiled to form a s 'iring-hinge, like a safety-pin.

O designates a ribbon, one end of which is passed through and secured in the loop a, and theotherend of which is passed through and secured in the loop a. r

When it is desired to suspend a mufi by means of the ribbon the clasp is secured to the front of the dress or cloak by means of the pin 0. The tongue B is then drawn out of the body or case A and passed, with the ribbon, through the mulf D, and then in erted and secured in the body or case A. The lady may then at any time leave the muff suspended by the ribbon, and have both hands free for other uses.

This simple article forms a cheap and ornamental substitute fora cord passed around the neck for suspending the muff, as has often been done heretofore.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a snap body orcase having provision at one end for the attachment of one end of a ribbon, a tongue inserted in the other end of said body or case and secured by a snap-catch, and having provision for the attachment of the other end of said ribbon, and a brooch-pin attached to the back of said body or case, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
