UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELVILLE J. FENWIOK, OF COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,201, dated December 20, 1881,
Application filed September 8, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVILLE J. FENWIOK, ofOottage Grove, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in a washing-machine provided with a rubbingcylinder attached to the lower ends of two connected rocking arms loosely mounted on a shaft of the machine, which arms also carry at their lower end an additional rubbing-block, on which the clothes are held by a clamp-bar provided with two arms fitting in sockets containing springs for pressing the clamping-bar on the block, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved washing-machine, parts being shown in section on the line 3 y, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line war, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the rubbers.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Two rocking arms, A, are connected at their upper ends by a transverse bar or handle, B, and are provided at or near their middle with slots O, through which the shaft D of the washing-machine frame passes. A rubbing-cylinder, E, provided with spiral grooves, is attached to the lower end of the rocking arms A, and a rounded spirally-grooved rubbing block, F, is rigidly attached to the lower ends of these arms and adjoining the rubbing-cylinder E. A clamp-bar, G, sliding in slots G .in the arms A, rests on the top of the block F,
raising it. A series of rollers, M, provided with spiral grooves N, are loosely mounted on a segmental concave line in a frame, 0, fitting in the washing-box P.
(ModeL) A are rocked, the articles will pass under the rubbing-cylinder E and the block F, and will be rubbed on the rollers M. During this rocking motion the arms A are raised occasionally to place the articles in another position under' the rubbing-blocks, the slots O permitting of such movement of the arms A. As the rollers M and the rubbers are grooved spirally they will move the articles in the direction of the length of these rollers in addition to the movement over the rollers. The clothes or other articles are only rubbed and are not pounded, and will not be torn or damaged by this machine. If the shaft D is withdrawh, the arms A and the frame 0 can be removed from the box P.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. In a washing-machine, the combination, with the rocking arms A, provided with the rubbers E F, of the spring-actuated clampingbar G, resting on the top of the rubber F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a washing-machine, the combination, with the rocking arms A, of the rubbers E and F, attached thereto, the clamping-bar G, provided with arms H, the sockets J, the springs K, and the rollers M, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a washing-machine, the combination,
with the rocking arms A and the rollers M, of
the cylindrical rubber E, the rubbing-block F, and the clamping-bar G, resting on the. top of the said rubbing-block, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4;. A washing-machine made substantially as herein shown and described, and containing the following elements, to wit: rocking arms A provided with slots 0, and loosely mounted on a shaft, D, rubbers E and F, at tached to the arms, a clamping-bar, G, provided with arms H, fitting in sockets J, containing springs K, and rollers M, mounted in a frame, 0, fitting in the box P, as set. forth.
