A. BONNIOL.
FINGER RING.
No. 251,170. Patented Dec. 20,1881.
it I [TM/672602? Maxim Jdab fianniol, I fokmwm. W10 661% a Fig. 2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHE BQNNIOL, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
FINGER-RING.
SPECIFICATIbN forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,170, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed September 10, 1881.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPHE BONNIOL, a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Rings, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of refereuce marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my device, and Figs. 2 and3 are sectionsof the same, taken through lines 00 and '1, similar letters of referenee indicating like parts in each of the several figures.
The object of this invention is to render a finger-ring or other similar article capable of being expanded or contracted in its circumference by and at the pleasure of the wearer; and it consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, all as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clai1ns.
Inthe drawings, a represents a ring embodying my improvement. 1) represents a clamp or sleeve, 0 an ornament and thumb-piece combined, and d a pinion attached thereto.
In carrying out my invention 1 construct the ring a with separable and serrated ends a, which pass each other sidewise, as shown in The said ends are confined in a clamp or sleeve, 1), through which passes a shank carrying a pinion, d, which intervenes between and meshes with the serra ed ends a, said (No model.)
shank being attached to a spherical head or thumb-piece, c, the latter being surrounded by adish shaped ornamental border, 0, attached to the sleeve I) or head, as may be preferred, all as shown.
The operation is as follows: When it is desirable to expand or contract the ring the head 0 is seized bythe thumb and tingerand the pinion rotated to the rightorto the left, as the case may be, the ends of the ring being arranged to slide freely back and forth through the sleeve, as will be readily understood. The adjustment of the parts is such as that the friction prevents the accidental expansion or contraction of the ring.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. An adjustable ring composed ot'a bod v,a, having serrated and lapping ends a, a clamp or sleeve, b, a pinion, (Land means for rotating the same, the. parts being arranged to operate substantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.
2, In an adjustable ring, the combination of a pinion, d, and means tor rotating the same, by which the ring may be expanded or contracted in circumference, substa tially as and for the purposes set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of August, 1881.
