FOLDING FLORAL BASKET Filed Dec. 20, 1946 Z0 INVENTOR. fiozsmc fl Kocu Patented May 30, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOLDING FLORAL BASKET Roderic M. Koch, Evansville, Ind.
Application December 20, 1946, Serial No. 717,564
1 Claim. 1
My present invention relates to an improved folding floral basket and more particularly to a vase supporting basket formed of metal rods and so designed. as to effect a pleasing and ornamental appearance combined with utility both in use and in shipping and delivery.
Generally floral baskets of the type designed to accommodate vases must of necessity be cumbersome and awkward to handle and in shipping require large cubical containers or cartons far out of proportion to the actual space occupied. The feet of the basket must spread a considerable distance to prevent the basket from toppling over under the weight of flowers and the usual handle requires a carton of great width.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a large ornamental basket which may be folded or collapsed into a thin structure which may be shipped in a thin carton the cubical contents of which are more in proportion to the actual space occupied by the basket.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised. but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified. structure within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the basket of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the basket legs in folded position.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the folded basket.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the pivot structure for the leg sections.
Fig. 5 is a partial top plan view of the handle attaching means.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view thereof.
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of carton for the folded basket.
Referring now to the drawings, I employ in the present preferred embodiment of my invention the curved legs 2 and 4 of suitable material here shown as metal rods. The lower portions 6 and 8 of these legs are curved on a smaller radius to form feet, and the legs are connected by arms 9 and I0 of flat bar construction secured as by welding at 12. These arms are spaced from each other and parallel so that the legs are maintained in rigid relation.
The upper ends of the legs are curled as at M both for ornamental purposes and to provide a two point support for the handle l6 which is un- 2 dulating as at 8 in its circular arrangement, the flat ends 20 of which are secured at 22 and 24.
Legs 26 and 28 which are of the same material and shape as legs 2 and 4 have curved feet 38, and the arms 32 and 34 secured at 36 connect these legs in rigid relation.
Bolts or rivets 38 connect the arms 8 and 32; and I9 and as in pivotal relation so that the section comprising the legs 26 and 28 may be rotated on the pivots either at right angles to the section having legs 2 and 4, or substantially parallel thereto.
In extended position, the feet are spaced at degrees affording a solid footing for the basket, while in folded position. the basket has a thickness little greater than the combined thickness of the juxtapositioned legs.
The upper ends of the legs 26 and 28 are curled at E4 to effect a symmetrical appearance and the folded basket may be shipped or stored in a thin carton 49 of suitable material as cardboard.
By the use of the basket of my invention a large vase may be supported between the curved legs and the basket may be formed with such ornamentation as may be desired without restriction because of the need for consuming shipping space it being apparent that the folded basket will require only a fraction of the space needed for the unfolded carton.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a foldable floral basket for a vase, the combination with two pairs of spaced metal rods r forming legs terminating in outwardly curved feet and having outwardly flared upper ends terminating in flat supporting curls, and a substantially circular handle having its opposite ends welded to the supporting curls of one pair of legs, of a central cross arm and a lower cross arm uniting each pair of legs, a vertically arranged pivot connecting the two central arms to form a bottom support for the vase, and an axially alined pivot connecting the lower arms.
