Description

V. l. BECKER May 23, 1950 BRAssIERE INVENTOR. Ficiorlfiafiar BY Filed Feb. 14, 1948 Patented May 23, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,508,703 BRASSIERE Victor 1. Becker, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application February 14, 1948, Serial No. 8,475
tempted by the provision of concentric lines of stitching arranged in circular paths with the center of the breast" cup constituting the center of the circularly-arranged lines of stitching.
Such reinforcement of the breast cups is often at- 6 Claims. (CL 2-42) lustrative embodiment of the invention is dis- While such an arrangement of stitching is effective in maintaining the breast cup in a welldefined circular form, it provides an equality of reinforcement all around the cup and which is not the optimum of efiicient support for the breasts.
The present invention, therefore, contemplates the provision of stitching in the breast cup which More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a brassiere having breast cups in each of which is provided a plurality of closely spaced, substantially parallel lines of stitching which begin at the upper edge of the brassire at one side of the center line of the breast cup and then pursue a circular path around the breast cup, with the center of the cup closed:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the portion of a brassire that is constructed according to the invention and,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of one of the breast cups showing the novel reinforcing stitching employed therein.
With reference to the drawing I and 2 indicate the two breast cups of the brassire, the same being shown connected together by means of the triangulated elastic insert 3, in the known manner. Each of the breast cups may be composed of one or more layers of fabric connected together in overlying relation, and each cup is formed in the required cupped conformation by the joinder together of segmental sections of falgric, by goring, or other means known in this ar To maintain the breast cups, or at least the major central area thereof, in the desired circular form, reinforcin stitching is provided. This stitching consists of a plurality of substantially parallel, closely spaced lines of stitching H defining a plurality of concentric circles 4 in the breast cup with the central point or extremity H) of the breast cup constituting the center point of the circles 4. Each of the lines of stitching has its upper termination at the upper edge of the breast cup as indicated at 5, while the lower end of each line of stitching extends to the lower end of the breast cup as indicated at 6. The result of this arrangement is that the lines of stitching ll cooperate in defining a reinforced circular area in the central part of the cup from which downwardly to the upper and lower edges of the constituting the center of the concentric lines r of stitching, said lines of stitching then extending downwardly to the lower edge of the brassiere, the lower terminations of the lines of stitching being also to one side of the center line of the breast cup and at the same side of the cup as that i which the upper terminals of the lines of stitching are located.
These and other objects are attained by the invention, a more particular description of which will hereinafter appear and be set forth in the claims appended hereto.
'- cup'is undesirable.
In the accompanyin drawing, wherein an 11- u brassiere as indicated at 5 and 6 respectively.
It will be observed that through this arrangement, 3, strongly reinforced area is provided in each breast cup and particularly in that portion of the cup wherein distension or spread of the That is to say, it is the desire and intention of the improved structure to not only support and mold or shape the breast into approved contour and in performing this function to restrain the breast against the laterally spreading tendency, this spread being retarded materially by stiffening or reinforcing the breast cups within the area in which the greatest tendency to spread exists, namely at the outer sides of the breasts beyond the vertical center line of the breast cup, such line being indicated at 8 in Fig. 1.
areas where such efiects are not desired, the redines of stitching crossing one another, the cross- "ing points of said lines of stitching as well as the inforcement and strengthening of the brassiere in those areas is attained by the expedient of utilizing stitching rather than by the additionof extra plies or inserts of fabric. V The result is that a lightweight, cool and comfortable brassiere is produced which will nevertheless provide a maximum of support and restraint for the bust.
While I h'ave'shown'one eiiiibodiment of the invention, it .is obvious that various chan ges may be made without .departi'n'glfromlftlie spiritof the invention.
