This invention relates to holders for exterior garbage cans, my main objects being to provide a holder for the purpose which is readily adjustable to take care of cans of different sizes; which will always hold the can clear of the ground; and which can be knocked down for shipment in a manner so that it will occupy a minimum of space.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device, and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.

These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the holder comprises a plurality (preferably three) identical sections, indicated generally at I. Each section comprises a leg, indicated generally at 2, and an arcuate top band 3 of light flexible and resilient metal. 7

Each leg, which is formed of stifi strap metal, is bent to form a straight depending top portion 4 permanently and rigidly secured at its upper end to the band 3 centrally of its ends; a horizontal, substantially U-shaped portion 5 projecting radially inward from the lower end of the portion 4 and forming an upper can supporting ledge 6; a lower ground engaging pad I; and a sharp pointed foot 8 depending from the outer end of the pad 1 preferably radially out a short distance from the leg portion 4.

The radius of the band 3 of each section is approximately the same as that of an average garbage can, and such band is of considerably greater arcuate extent than 120", being provided with a row of bolt holes 9 toward its ends.

When the three units are assembled, therefore, the various bands overlap each other to form a full circle whose inner diameter is approximately that of the can to be received in the holder. The bands being of light and flexible material, they may be easily sprung in or out to change the diameter of the circle as the size of any particular can may require.

Bolts in are then placed through matching ones of the holes 9 to connect the bands and prevent them from separation. However, if the holder when being assembled and set up is to be permanently used by the owner for a certain can size only, the bands may be welded or otherwise rigidly connected together in the necessary overlapping relationship.

The holder is set up for use by depressing the feet 8 into the ground so that the pads l engagethe same and thus limit downward movement of the holder irrespective of the weight of the can and its contents. At the same time the can itself. will not contact the ground since it rests on the ledges 6 which are well clear of ground level. The can is thus not only maintained clear of the ground, but cannot be upset by dogs or other animals.

The fact that the ground engaging portions or feet 8 of the legs are further apart than the span of the upper portions, or than the width of the can, makes for great stability of the holder and is a great aid in preventing upsetting of the holder and can.

The legs may be permanently connected to the band sections, as by welding or they may be detachably connected thereto as by bolting.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:

1. A garbage can holder comprising a substantially circular band unit adapted to surround a can, and supporting legs depending from the unit and adapted to be depressed into the ground; each leg being of initially bendable material and being bent to form a can-supporting ledge projecting radially inward from the leg, and a stop pad below and spaced from said ledge to limit depression of the leg into the ground.

2. A holder as in claim 1 in which the stop pads project a great-er distance radially out from the vertical axis of the holder than do the legs above the ledges.
