In accordance with the present invention, I have provided a ticket issuing mechanism which includes an oscillatabie element for engaging and advancing a ticket strip in one direction of movement and disengaging and moving relatively to the strip -upon return movement. More particularly, the device includes a guide for the e ticket strip which is adapted to be moved to.- ward and away from the oscillatable `member to enga-ge or disengage the member and a strip of tickets so that the Yfeeding of the strip takes place in only one direction of movement of .the osoillatable member.

Thus, the spacing between a projection and one stop member may be such that the bar will move a distance proportional to the length of one ticket before the projection and the stop member engage. Other stop members and projecf tions are so located that the bar travels a greater distance, and, therefore, more than one ticket may be issued before .the .stop member .end the projection come into engagement.
The device is provided with means responsive to the motion of the ticket advancing means which automatically cuts off the current supply to the solenoids when the desired number of ,tickets has been advarieed. and mechanism for restoring the ticket advancing means to its initial position resolv for the issuance of additional tickets.
Ticket issuing devices of the type described above are compact and can be duplicated easily. For these reasons, any desired number of such ticket issuing devices may be assembled in a suitable case to permit the issuance of tickets of differing value.
For a better understanding of the present invention, reference may be had to the accomm panying drawings in which:

The form of ticket issuing device chosen to illustrate the present invention may consist of a casing Ill formed vof sheet metal or any other ,desired material having a Jbottom ma, a front wall lob, a back lwall lilo, a top 19d, and side The casing I0 is formed `with a rearwardly projecting compartment ll y:for receiving the control keys .12a to 12e of the device and the associated control mechanism.

The mechanism for issuing the tickets includes a shiftable, arcuate tubular guide member I6 having a slot Ilia in its under surface in order to expose the portion of the strip l5 having the perforations therein. The guide member I6 is provided with a journal 16h on its upper surface in which is rotatably received a pivot pin l1 on a ball crank lever i8. The receiver I8 is pivotally supported by means of a pivot pin I9 projectng from a partition or the wall me of the casing l and has its lower arm 18e connected by means of a link 20 to a reciprocating knife or shear blade 2l. The shear blade 2l is rigidly supported upon the end of a rod or shaft 22 that is slidably guided in a bearing member 23 ixed to the under surface of the top ld adjacent the opening I3. The blade 2| is normally urged to the left as viewed in Figure 1 by means of a spring 24 mounted on the shaft 22. The blade 2l cooperates with a second shear blade 25 which is xed to the top IUd adjacent the opening I3 so that the ticket strip I5 must pass between the shear blades 2l and 25 in order to pass through the opening i3.
The shear blade 2l is reciprocated toward and away from the blade 25, and the guide member I6 is raised and lowered by means of a quickresponse solenoid 25 having a reciprocable armature member 21 that is connected by means of the lever 28 to the shear blade 2|. The lever 28 may be pivotally supported by means of a pivot pin 29 fixed to the casing partition me. Thus upon movement of the armature 21 to the left as viewed in Figure '1, the shear blade 2l is moved toward the right and the guide member I6 is rocked downwardly by means of the bell crank member 28.
The strip of tickets l may be fed from asupply hopper 30 mounted in the bottom of the case and is directed upwardly through another nxed arcuate guide member 3l into the lower end of the guide member I6.
The strip l5 is advanced by means of an oscillatable sector shaped member 32 which is pivotally supported in the casing I0 by means of a shaft 33 projecting from the partition le. The sector member 32 may consist of a metal stamping having a flange 32a extending at substantially a right angle to the body of the member 32 `:as shown in Figure 2, and a tubular hub 32h for receiving the shaft 33. The ange 32a is provided with a plurality of projections or pins 32e which are spaced at such intervals as to engage the periorations in the ticket strip l5.
When the pins 32e are engaged in the perforations a, and the member 32 is rotated clockwise, the ticket strip is advanced to the right. In order to produce such movement of the sector member 32, the hub 32h has attached thereto a lever 34 having a pin thereon which'engages in an elongated slot 35a in a lever 35 that is pivotally supported by means of a pivot pin 36 on the casing i0 of the device. The lever 35 is provided with a pivot pin 31 which is connected with the reciprocating armature 38 of a slowresponse solenoid 39. Thus upon movement of the armature 38 to the left as viewed in Figure 1, the lever 35 is moved clockwise and the sector 32 is also moved clockwise but through a greater angular distance. The movement of the armature 38 may be at least suicient to cause a 90 movement of the sector 32 from the position disclosed in Figure 1. The sector member 32 may be returned to the position shown in Figure '1, by means of a spring 40 that is connected to the lever arm 35 and a portion of the front wall of the casing Ill as shown in Figure 1.
If desired, the hub 32b may be connected to a counter 42 of conventional type by means of a flexible shaft coupling 43 and an overrunning clutch (not shown) in order to indicate the total number of tickets issued by the device.
In order to control the device so that any number of tickets from one to ive, for example, may be issued, the armature of the solenoid 39 is provided with a rearwardly extending bar or shaft 45 which is provided, as shown, with iive spaced apart projections 45a, 45h, 45e, 45d, and 45e. These stop members 45a to 45e cooperate selectively with flve stop members 46, each of which is under the control of one of the keys 12a to 12e. Inasmuch as the stop members 46 are identical, only one of these members will be described herein.
Each stop member 45 includes a leverarm 46a (Figure 3) which is pivotally supported upon a shaft 41 extending longitudinally of the casing and supported by the partition Ille. The member 45 also includes a laterally projecting lever arm 45h which is engaged by the spindle or push rod 43a to 43e extending downwardly from each key 12a to l2e. The stop member 45 is normally urged in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 3 by means of a coil spring 49 engaging the lever arm 45h. The spring 49 biases the lever arm clockwise away from the bar 45 and the projection 45e as shown in Figure 3 so as to prevent engagement between the projection 45e and a pawl member 50 (Figure l) pivotally mounted on the upper end of the member 46.
When the key l2a is depressed, for example, the corresponding member 46 is rocked in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 3 in order to bring the downwardly projecting tooth 55a into alignment with the projection 45e on the bar 45, thereby limiting the rocking movement of the sector member 32 to an angular distance sufficient to issue five tickets.
If the next adjacent key 12b which controls the issuance of four tickets is depressed, the member 45 corresponding to the projection 45d is rocked into position to intercept the projection 45d and thus permit the bar`45 to travel only four-fifths as far as the distance when projection 45e is used as the stop, whereby only four tickets will be issued.
Similarly, when the projection 45e, 45h, or 45a is used as a stop control, three, two, and one tickets, respectively, will be issued.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 4, the keys 12a to I2e are used to operate a switch member 53 by means of which the solenoids 26 and 3S are energized. The switch 53 may be of the microswitch type having a plunger 53a. extending therethrough which, upon depression, closes the switch and connects the solenoids 26 and 39 to a source of electric current by means of the conductors 54 and 55. A plate 56 rests upon the plunger 53a and is provided with a slot corresponding to each key |2a to 12e, which receives a reduced portion 481 on each o the spindles 48a, to 48e. Thus when a key 12a, for example, is depressed, the actuating plate 56 is engaged by the spindle 48a and forced down, closing the switch 53 and energizing both of the solenoids 26 and 39, with the result that the shear blade 2l is quickly retracted to the right and the arcuate guide member i6 is moved toward the sector member 32. The pins 32e are engaged by the perforations of the ticket strip and the sector 32 is rocked clockwise until one'V of the projections @5a to 5e engages its corresponding stop member te. `When this occurs, the corresponding pawl member 59 is rocked clockwise'and engages a plate el which is supported above the stop inember lifts this plate. As the plate 51 is lifted, the plunger 53a, is moved upwardly, opening the switch and deenergizing the solonoids, and the actuating plate 5e is also lifted by means of a rotary cam lever 5ta (Figure l) supported on the partition ite, with the result that the keys itc to 22e cannot actuate the switch 53a until the sector member 32 is restored to its initial position. This mechanism includes a bell lever 58 pivotally supported on the lower end of the guide member 3| and having a roller 55a on one arm thereof bearing against the `ticket strip lli. The other arm 58h is p 'ovided with a plunger 559 which bears against the i, ersurf'ace of the plate 57 and the entire bell crank 53 is normally urged in a counterclcclovise direction by means of 'a spring 60. Thr-.s when the free end 'of the ticket strip passes the roller 5ta, the bell crank lever will rotate in a counterclockwise direction, thereby lifting the plates al and t5 and shutting oir the current to the solenoids. A manual control level' or handie etc may be provided on the bell crank 58 for rocking the bell crank back to its normal position, thereby permitting the last five tickets to be issued.
The described above is simple, can be formed oi a relatively few parts as compared with @rior ticket issuing devices, while at the e aifording great flexibility 'and ease of n the issuing of tickets. A plurality of tick t issuing devices of the type described above 'oe combined in-a single case Il? so that a variety of tickets of different valuescan be issued ically. It will be understood that the r of keys and that the number of tickets that can be issued by the actuation of a single key can be varied widely. Thus the devices can be modified to permit it to issue sin tickets 'or more by depressing an appropriate key, 'or it may be r ovided i only one or two keys for issuing one or tivo tickets. Moreover, the 'electrical system for actuating the solenoids `successively may *ed to include a separate switch 6i! `lor controlling the solenoid 38, as shown in Figure 5. switch te is closed by the 'armature of the solenoid 2s when the latter is 'energized to enersivitch to move the guide i6 toward the sector merel er sil before the latter is moved. The `'slow acting solenoid is permits the guide l@ to move away from the sector member 32 before the latter returns to its initial position.
Therefore, it will be understood that vthe ticket issuing devices of the type embodying the present invention are susceptible to considerable modification and the above described embodiment of the invention accordingly should be considered 6 as illustrative and not as limiting the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A ticket issuing device comprising an arcuate tubular guide for receiving a strip of tickets having perforations therein, an oscillatable sector member adjacent to said guide and having projections thereon for entering said perforations, means supporting said guide formovement toward and away roin said sector member to engage and disengage said projections and perfoi-ations, an electrical means for rocking said sector in one direction to advance said strip through said guide, another electrical means for moving said guide toward said sector, and manually operable means for actuating both of sai electrical means for moving said guide tov/ard said sector and thereafter rocking said sector in saidk one direction to advance tickets through said guide.
2. A ticket issuing device comprising an arcuate tubular guide for receiving a strip of tickets having perforaticns therein, an oscillatable sector member adjacent to said guide and having projections thereon for entering said perforations, means 'supporting said guide for movenient toward and away from s id sector member to engage and disengage said projections and periorations, an electrical means for rocking said sector in one direction to advance said strip through said guide, another electrical means for moving said guide toward said sector, and inanually operable means for actuating both of said electrical means for moving said guide toward said sector and thereafter rocking said sector in said one direction to advance tickets through said guide, and means for moving said guide away from said sector to disengage said projections virorn said perforations after said sector has been rocked in said one direction.
3. A ticket issuing device comprising an arcuate tubular guide for receiving a strip of tickets having perforations therein, an oscillatable sector member adjacent to said guide and having projections thereon for entering said perforations, means supporting said guide for movement toward and away 'from said sector member to engage and disengage said projections and perforations, an electrical for rocking said sector in one direction to advance said strip through said guide, another electrical means for moving said guide toward said sector, shearing means connected with said another electrical means for severing said strip and opened by said another electrical means as said guide is moved toward said sector member, and manually operable means for actuating both of said electrical means for moving said guide toward said sector and thereafter rocking sector in said one direction to advance tickets through said guide, and means for moving said guide away from said sector to disengage said projections from said perforations and closing said shearing means to sever said strip after said sector has gize the solenoid under the control ofV the f' been 'rocked in said one direction.
4. A vticket issuing device comprising a tubular guide for receiving a strip of tickets having holes therein, vsaid guide having a longitudinal slot exposing a portion or the strip and the holes therein, a sector member having projections thereon adapted to enter 'said holes, means supporting Said guide for movement toward and away 'from sector member to `engage and Yoli'z's'e'ngage said projections and 4said holes, shearing means odia-cent to `one end or sai-d guide Yhaving relatively movable blades, means connecting said shearing means and said guide for opening said blades when said guide moves toward said sector member, and closing said blades as said guide moves away from said sector member, means for oscillating said sector, means for moving said guide toward and away from said sector, and manually operable means for controlling said sector oscillating and said guide moving means to advance said tickets along said guide and shear tickets from said strip.
5. A ticket issuing device comprising a movable guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member adjacent to said guide for advancing said strip along said guide, means supporting said guide for movement toward and away from said member, shearing means including relatively movable blades adjacent to one end of said guide, solenoid means connected to said shearing means and said guide for opening said blades and moving said guide toward said member, solenoid means for rocking said member from an initial position to advance said strip, means for closing said shearing means and moving said guide away from said member and thereafter rocking said member back to said initial position, and manually operable means for energizing said solenoids and controlling the movement of said member to advance a predetermined number of tickets along said guide and sever them from said strip.
6. A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member having projections for engaging the perforations to advance the strip, a solenoid for moving said guide toward said member, means for moving said guide away from Said member, a solenoid for rocking said member in a direction to advance said strip along said guide, and manually operable means for energizing said solenoids to move said guide toward said member to engage said projections in said perforations and thereafter rock said member to advance said strip.
7. A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member having projections for engaging the perforations to advance the strip, a solenoid for moving said guide toward said member, means for moving said guide away from said member, a solenoid for rocking said member in a direction to advance said strip along said guide, and manually operable means for energizing said solenoids to move said guide toward said member to engage said projections in said perforations and rock said member to advance said strip, and means responsive to movement of said member for deenergizing said solenoids.
8. A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member having projections for engaging the perforations to advance the strip, a solenoid for movingV said guide toward said member, means for moving said guide away from said member, a solenoid for rocking said member in a direction to advance said strip along said guide, a plurality of keys, switch means actuated by said keys for energizing said solenoids, an elongated member having a plurality of spaced apart projections thereon connected to and movable with said oscillatable member, and stop members movable relatively to said elongated member into the paths of said spaced apart projections to limit the movement of said oscillatable member, each of said stop members being actuated by a different key.
9. A ticket issuing machine comprising a guide for a strip of tickets, a reciprocating strip feeding member arranged adjacent said guide for engaging a strip of tickets on said guide and for advancing the same, means supporting said guide for relative movement toward and away from said feeding member for effecting a driving engagement between said feeding member and a strip of tickets on said guide, means for controlling the extent of forward movement of said feeding member to control the distance through which said strip is advanced, means for moving said supporting guide away from said feeding member to disengage the latter from said strip at the completion of said forward movement of said feeding member and for returning said feeding member to its home position, and means for severing said strip upon completion of said forward movement.

A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member, means movable with said member for engaging in said perforations to advance said strip in one direction of oscillation of said oscillatable member, a solenoid for rocking said oscillatable member in a direction to advance said strip when said solenoid is energized, a plurality of movable keys, switch means actuated by movement of each of said keys for energizing said solenoid, an elongated control member connected, and movable, with said oscillatable member, and separate elements, each actuated by a different one of said keys, movable toward said control member in response to actuation of their respective keys, means movable with said control member for engaging one of said elements corresponding to an actuated key to displace said element, and means responsive to displacement of said element for opening said switch means to deenergize said solenoid.
ll. A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a perforated strip of tickets, cutting means including a movable blade for severing said strip, a'rst solenoid for withdrawing said blade when said solenoid is energized, means for urging said blade in a direction to sever said strip, an oscillatable member, a second solenoid for rocking said member in one direction when said solenoid is energized, means urging said oscillatable member in the opposite direction, means movable with said oscillatable member for engaging said strip and advancing it through said cutting means when said second solenoid is energized, a plurality of depressible keys, each key corresponding to a different number of tickets to be severed from said strip, switch means movable to closed position to energize said rst and second solenoids upon depressing each of said keys, separate stop control elements corresponding to each key displaceable from one position to a second position upon depressing of a corresponding key, an elongated control member connected to said oscillatable member and movable relatively to said stop control elements upon movement of said oscillatable member, and means movable with said control member for engaging and displacing a stop control element when the latter is in said second position, and means responsive to displacement of said control element for opening said switch means to deenergize said first and second solenoids.

A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a perforated strip of tickets, cutting means in- 9 cluding a movable blade for severing said strip, a rst electrically actuated means for withdrawing said blade when said electrically actuated means is energized, means for urging said blade in a direction to sever said strip, an oscillatable member, a second electrically actuated means for rocking said member in one direction when said second electrically actuated means is energized, means urging said oscillatable member in the opposite direction, means movable with said oscillatable member for engaging said strip and advancing it through said cutting means when said second electrically actuated means is energized, a
plurality of depressible keys, each key corresponding to a different number of tickets to be severed from said strip, switch means movable to closed position to energize said rst and second electrically actuated means upon depressing each of said keys, separate control elements corresponding to each key, each control element being movable from one position to a second position upon de pressing of a corresponding key, an elongated control member connected to said oscillatable member and movable relatively to said control elements upon movement of said oscillatable member, and means movable with said control member` for engaging and displacing a control element when the latter is in said second position, and means responsive to displacement of said control element for opening said switch means to deenergize said rst and second electrically actuated means.
13. A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member having projections for engaging the per forations to advance the strip, a rst solenoid having a movable armature connected to said guide for `moving said guide toward said member, means for moving said guide away from said member, a second solenoid for rocking said member in a direction to advance said strip along said guide, manually operable means for energizing said rst solenoid to move said armature and thereby move said guide toward said member to engage said projections in said perforations, and switch means actuated by movement of said armature to energize said second solenoid to rock said member to advance said strip.
14. A ticket issuing device comprising an arcuate guide member for receiving a perforated ticket strip, cutting means including a movable blade adjacent to one end of said guide member, a first solenoid for withdrawing said blade when said solenoid is energized, means for urging said blade in a direction to sever said strip, an oscillatable member substantially concentric with said guide member, a second solenoid for rocking said member toward said cutting means, means urging said oscillatable member in the opposite direction, means on said oscillatable member for engaging said strip and advancing it through said cutting means when said second solenoid is energized, a plurality of depressible keys, each key corresponding to a diierent number of tickets to be severed from said strip, first switch means actuated to energize said first solenoid to withdraw said blade upon depressing any of said keys, second switch means responsive to withdrawal of said blade to energize said second solenoid to rock said oscillatable member toward said cutting means, an elongated control member reciprocable in response to rocking of said oscillatable member, and a plurality of stop control elements spaced apart lengthwise of said control member and movable, by depressing said keys, into the path of said control member for engagement thereby to actuate said first switch to limit the movement of said oscillatable member to an amount substantially equal to the length of the ticket strip containing the number of tickets corresponding to the key depressed.
15. A ticket issuing device comprising a guide for a strip of perforated tickets, an oscillatable member having at least one projection for engaging said perfcrations to advance said strip, a cutting means adjacent one end of said guide and including a movable blade for severing said strip, a solenoid having a movable armature, means connecting said armature to said blade for withdrawing said blade when said solenoid is energized, means urging said blade in the opposite direction to sever said strip, a second solenoid for rocking said oscillatable member in a direction to advance said strip through said guide and cutting means, means for rocking said oscillatable member in the opposite direction, anda switch for energizing said solenoid to advance said strip, said switch being actuated to energize said second solenoid by movement of said armature when said first solenoid is energized.
