2 Claims. (Cl. 96)
My invention relates to improvements in infants cribs of the trundle bed type.
The primary'object of my invention is to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive crib for use alongside an adults bed to conserve room, and which is adapted to support a mattress at the same level as that of the bed and to be folded with the mattress and bed clothing therein and slid over the floor under the bed out of sight.
Other and subordinate objects, also comprehended by my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements and the advantages thereof will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved infants crib in a preferred embodiment thereof unfolded and positioned for use alongside an:
adults bed shown in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation of the infants crib and drawn to a larger scale,
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation,
Figure 4 is a view in vertical section taken on I,
the line 4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the crib folded,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view partl in side elevation and partly in section illustrating one of the latch bolts and the manner in which it is used, and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating one of the catch hooks,
Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improved infants crib, as shown, comprises a rectangular base frame 5 formed of wood panels, or boards, and including a front panel 2, a rear panel 3 and side panels secured together in any suitable manner. The front and rear panels 2, 3 project at one end outwardly beyond the side panel 5, and said panel 5 is provided with upper edge notches 6 in the ends thereof, all for a purpose presently seen. Side sills extend beneath the side panels 4, 5 along th lower edges thereof, and are suitably connected to the same and to the front and rear panels 2, 3 with casters, or the like, 8 at the ends thereof.
A rectangular crib frame 9, relatively narrower than the base frame I, is swingably mounted, as
presently described, on th base frame 5 for swinging into surmounting spaced position relative thereto, or, into said base frame, as required. The crib frame 8 comprises panels, or boards, including front and rear panels lil, H and side panels [2, l3 suitably connected together rigidly, and panel-like front, rear and side leaves l4, l5, l5, l'l suitably hinged, as at E8, to the front, rear and side panels H], ll, 82, 53, respectively, for unfolding into vertical position to increase the depth of the crib frame and which are foldable inwardly into horizontal position to decrease the depth of said crib frame to substantially that of the base frame I. As will be seen, when the crib frame 9 is swung upwardly into surmounting relation to the base frame i, said crib frame is disposed at a level such that a bed made therein is substantially at the level of an adults bed, and said crib frame is offset from one side of the base frame 2 so that said base frame may be slid side- Wise part way under an adults bed to dispose the crib frame Q close along one side thereof.
To facilitate folding the leaves Hi, l5, l6, H, the side panels l2, it are lower, or narrower, than the front and rear panels 90, l I so that the front and rear leaves l4, l5 may be folded flat on the folded side leaves l2, H3. The hinges It for the side leaf l6, which is designed to be positioned alongside an adults bed, are double acting so that said leaf may be swung outwardly and downwardly for access to the interior of the crib frame 9 from the adults bed.
An internal ledge is is provided around the lower edge of the crib frame 9 to support the usual springs and bedding, not shown, thereon.
For swingably mounting the described crib frame 9 on the base frame I, bar-like corner legs are provided in pairs at opposite sides of said crib frame 9, there being a pair of long legs 25 and a pair of short legs 26, said legs being pivoted at upper ends thereof, as at 21, to the front and rear panels I0, H. The lower ends of the short pair of legs 25 extend into the base frame I and are pivoted, as at 28, to the front and rear panels 2, 3 to swing alongside the same. The lower ends of the long pair of legs 25 are similarly pivoted, adjacent the lower ends thereof, as at 29, to the extending ends of the front and rear panels 2, 3 and outwardly of the side panel 3, so that said legs 25 may swing into the notches 6.
Suitable catch hooks are provided on the side panel 5 for hooking over pins 3| on the lower ends of the long legs 25 to hold said legs upright 3 and thereby hold the crib frame 9 in upswun position.
As will now be seen, the base frame I being wider than the crib frame 9, when the crib frame is in upswung position, said base frame i may be slid sideways part way under one side of the adults bed, represented at 32, in dotted lines, so that the crib frame 9 will be disposed close to one side of said bed 32. At the same time, the base frame I provides, for containing therein, the crib frame 9 when the latter is folded and swung downwardly. The crib frame 9 is folded by releasing the latch bolts 2 l, in a manner which will be clear, then swinging the'side' leaves I6, I? inwardly, and then swinging 'the front and rear leaves M, I5 inwardly over the side leaves I6, ll, as shown in Figure 5. As will be understood, the arrangement is such that the leaves l4, l5, IS, IT may be folded down over the bedding, not shown, in the crib frame 9. The folded crib frame 9 may then be swung down into the base'frame i on the pivots 21,28, 29, as also shown in Figure 5, after the baseframe l is slid outwardly from under the may be slid under the adults bed 32 in an'out- 'of-the-way hidden position.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is sus- -'ceptible of modification without departingfrom the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
