Application April 6, 1948, Serial No. 19,380
1 Claim. l
My invention relates to garment hangers, an important object of which is to provide a garment hanger with the means for holding a garment, which is draped thereon, securely in place.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garment hanger, having pivotably attached arms, the tips of which are provided with a bearing surface which, when in a downward position, will hold a garment, which is draped over the hanger, securely in place.
A further object of my invention is to provide a sliding hook means, which is pivotably connected to the aforementioned arms at their inner termini in such a way that, when the garment hanger and garment are suspended on a hook, the weight of the said garment hanger and garment Wili maintain a iirm frictional bearing, holding the said garment to the garment hanger.
A still further object of my invention is to provide, in a garment hanger, a knurled or roughened surface on the top side of the bearing -plate over which may be draped a light weight garment, such as a Womans slip and having shoulder straps, or like supports.
Other objects and advantages inherent in my invention will become readily apparent from the ensuing description and the accompanying drawings, and in which like parts are designated by like numerals, and in which:
Fig. l represents a front view of my invention showing the garment draped thereon in dotted lines and also showing, in dotted lines, an open position of the clamping arms of my garment hanger.
Fig. 2 represents a cross-sectional view taken substantially on lines 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View taken substantially on the lines 3-3 on Fig. 1.
Fig. l is a bottom view oi a portion of my invention looking in the direction of the arrows 4 4 on Fig. 1.
Referring to the illustrations, my invention is generally designated 5 and consists of a curved hanger of wood orplastic through the center of which a hole I is drilled vertically to retain slidably a length of wire 8. The tcp end of the wire 8 is formed into a hook. 9 and its bottom end is flattened at Il? and is provided with a hole 3| through which a pin I I is fastened. A
A pair of iat arcuately curved and tapered arms I2 and I3 are pivotably attached, one on each side of the hanger 6 at l1 by a rivet I8. The outer ends of the arms I2 and I3 are flattened at I4 and held together by a plate I5, the top of which is roughened or knurled at It. 'Ihe wider inner ends of the arms I2 and I3 are formed into reverse arcuate bends at 2B and are offset at I9 to afford clearance for the arcuately bent ends 32 of a second similar pair of arcuately curved arms 23 and 24, which in turn are pivotably attached to the hanger 6 at 2t by rivets 2l; the outer ends of the arms 23 and 2t being attened and held together by a plate in a means similar to that of the arms I2 and I3. The curved inner ends 20 of the arms I2 and I3 and the inner curved ends 32 of the arms 23 and 2li are slotted at 2I and 25 respectively.
The ends of the pin Ii attached to the wire 8 project through the said slots 2I and 25 and are peened over at 22 in order to confine the curved inner ends 2i! and 32 so that a downward pressure upon the wire 8 will, by means of the pin I I, slots 2l and 25, and the pivoting points Il and 25, cause the arms I2 and I3, and the arms 23 and 24 to swing pivotably upwardly causing the plates I 5 to be free of the top edge of the hanger 6. In this position, the garment 28 may be draped over the hanger 6. Then, when the hanger and garment are suspended from a hook or cloth-es rack,
faces 30 of the plates I5 are again bearing upon the surface of the hanger 6 holding the garment 28 iirmly therebetween preventing slippage of the said garment 28.
For garments having shoulder straps or like means of support, the top surfaces of the plates I5 are knurled to provide a non-slippable holding surface for the shoulder straps of the said garment 29, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.
It Will be noted that this garment hanger requires no spring or adjusting means to maintain a frictional engagement or bearing which hold the garment in place on the hanger, the combined weights of the garment itself and the hanger providing the necessary pressure.
Although I have herein described, rather succinctly, the structural features of my invention, yet it is understood that changes and departures therefrom may be made provided they fall within the purview and denition of the subjoined claim setting forth the limitations thereof.
Having thus disclosed and revealed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A garment hanger of the character described comprising, a curved hanger bar member, a pair tions, and a hook element having its lower ter- 10 minus secured to the said pivot element and slidably mounted in the said hanger bar member at a point intermediate both the said pairs of hanger arms.
