-' ARMENT HANGER AND GREASER Filed Jan. 2; 1945 Fig. 2
Charla/2'. fizfewarzf,
INVENTOR W/MZ/ hf; ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 15, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER AND CREASER Charles A. Stewart, Worcester, Mass.
Application January 2, 1945, Serial No. 571,037
1 Claim.
This invention relates to garment hangers, and it is an improvement on the automatic self adjusting trousers hanger and creaser for which Letters Patent of the United States have been granted and issued to Emery Hegedus, dated October 21, 1941, No. 2,259,692.
My device operates entirely in the same manner as that of said Letters Patent to Emery Hegedus, No. 2,259,692, and it is almost entirely constructed in a similar manner, with the important and inventive difference, however, that provisions are made in the construction for a more even and reliable movement of the parts, and for an easier and more eflicient use and operation of the device.
Instead of one single pivoted arm at each side of a garment hook, I employ two such pivoted arms, which are arranged in such a manner that they will remain parallel to one another in every position of the device, whereby not only do they insure a more steady and reliable movement, but they also insure that the vertical elements at their ends, which are the trousers presser proper in the Hegedus device, will always remain in a true vertical position, which is the position for their operation within a pair of trousers, and into which position in the Hegedus device they may have to be set by hand.
In my improved garment hanger and creaser, efficient means are also provided for contracting the device before inserting it into a pair of trousers, as against the awkward contracting thereof in the original Hegedus patent wherein the device is put into a narrowed position by grasping its pivoted arms and pulling them upwardly.
I may remark that not only my device but also the original device of said patent may be used for other garments than trousers, where it is indicated.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification and accompanying the same:
Fig. 1 is a rear view of my trousers hanger and creaser in an inoperative, fully expanded position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view but in a contracted position, as when applied into a pair of trousers, which are indicated in an imaginary manner by dot and dash lines;
Fig. 3 is a partly sectional end view, the section being taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary end view showing the trousers creaser member proper of my device, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, the section being taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail by characters of reference, my trousers hanger and creaser is generally indicated by the numeral l0 and is composed of three main elements, namely, a central relatively stationary hook device proper H, a link mechanism I2 at the lower end of said hook device, and a coil spring l3 between said stationary hook device and the movable link mechanism l2.
The hook device I has the usual hook I I at its upper end, whereby the trousers hanger and creaser may be suspended from a bar in a closet or from any appropriate element, as usual. Hook I4 is continued in a stem 5, the lower end of which is made flat and wide, as at l6.
Right hand and left hand parallel arms l1 and Ila, and I8 and "la, respectively, are pivoted at the lower end of the flat portion l6, as indicated at I9 and |9a.
A slidable element 20 is arranged on the lower part l5a of the stem I5, said element being composed of a vertical plate 2|, from which is separated and forwardly bent a projecting upper ear 22, and at the lower end of which is provided a similarly transversely projecting lower ear 23, in the center thereof, said ears having appropriate registering holes through which the stem portion |5a passes, whereby the plate 2| may slide upwardly or downwardly on the stem I5.
Left hand and right hand link members 24 and 25, respectively, are arranged between the sliding plate 2| and the respective left hand and right hand arms |8 and l8a, and Il and Ila, upper and lower pivots 26 and 2l being arranged between said link members, the sliding element 20, and the arms H and I8, respectively. It will be observed that the link members 24 and 25 and upper arms |8a and Ila are not connected but free of each other. The upper end of the plate 2| is curled and a wire 2 la is secured thereinto.
A down hanging double fork member 28 is pivotally secured at the outer end of each pair of parallel arms l1 and Ila, and I8 and |8a, said double fork member being formed of two inn'er branches 29 and two outer branches 30, the respective branches being connected by the curved upper portions 3|, and preferably being made of one integral bent metal piece. The inner branches 29 are somewhat separated, and the outer ends of the respective arms I1 and Ila, and I8 and "la, are pivotally arranged therebetween, as indicated at 32 and 32a. The outer branches 30' may have teeth or serrations 33 at their outer edges. The lower end of the coiled spring I3 is resting against the upper car 22 on 3 the sliding plate 2| while its upper end is secured to the stem l5, as at 34.
The use and operation of my device is practically obvious from the said patent to Emery Hegedus, No. 2,259,692, and from the drawings and description ofiered hereinbefore, but I want to offer the following remarks to more clearly explain the same:
When it is desired to use my .device and to secure a pair of trousers thereon, the two pairs of parallel arms I! and Ila, and I8 and I811, thereof,
will be swung upwardly, as indicated by the ar-.
rows Nb and lab, and my device will assume the position as generally indicated inIEfigfZ.
For the contracting of the device, that is,.swin ging the two pairs of arms upwardly on their central pivots I9 and I911, the user will hookitherfingers of one hand undereath the side extensions 2|b and 210 of the sliding plate wire 21a, and will exert an upward pull thereon, as indicated :by-the arrow 21d.
In the mentioned resulting position, spring I 3 will be compressed to a desired degreegdepending .onzthe amount of upward swing ior 'the arms H, -l?l'a,:and H3 and 18a, and, naturally, spring l'3'will have a strong tendency to push the sliding ele- -men t 20 zdownward-ly, andthereby return the arms IL-l, ill1a,:and :18, tl 8a,*to -their normal, more or less horizontal position, as will =be obvious In the'pos'i tion indicated in Fig. 2, which I may call the compressed or folded position, the four branches 30 of the -two outer elements 28, of my device will be inserted in the respective four creases '35 of the lower ou-ter ends 35 of the pair-oi trousers 31, as indicated inFig.2, and'thereupon the retaining hold on the sliding plate 2| and therethrough on the-arms I 1, Na, and "I 8, 18a, will be' released, and the armswill be swung outwardly under the pressure of the spring I3,=-mem'bers 30 being ftightly pressed into the respective creases, and firmly suspending the trousers on the device through said pressure and through the friction between the outer teeth =or serrations 33 :on 'the members 3U and the material of the trousers.
When it desireizl te remove the trousers from the hanger, the outer members 28 will be moved inwardly, by again pulling plate 21 upwardly and swinging the arms 1 il-a, and 1:8, I'8a, in an inward direction.
It "will be seen'thatthe arms :in each pair, I8
and Mia, and 2|! and :I la, will move parallel with one another in every-position of the device, and that, :as has been mentioned, the members :28 en'- gaging the-creases inzthe trousers ends, will always remain automatically vertical and securedin that position, which, of course, greatly facilitate the insertion of them 'into or :removal sfrom the trousers.
It is :also obvious that instead of the :pivots 52.1 being on theloyverrarms- I21 and l:8,1the upper :arms Ifla and l8a may bepivotedpto thedinkmmmbers 25 and 24, respectively, in which case, of course, said link membersimayxhe made shorter, reaching to :theupper arms :l'laand I'Saonly.
I also may additionally improve my device by making the part 34, the purpose of which is to serve as the upper securing for the coil spring l3, into a rest for the thumb of the hand, the two fingers of which may be hooked underneath the extensions 2 lb and 2 I0, and thereby provide comfortable and easy means to operate my device with one hand.
It also will be seen that the sliding element 20 may be made of many -;other shapes and'iforms to serve its purpose in my device as a pulling means, the preferred construction is the one shown, which -may be bent and stamped out of one piece of sheet materialypraetically with one operation, in an efiicient and economical manner.
Finally, I may remark that rubber or similar frictionaLsleeves may be applied on the members 30, or an appropriate liquid or paste coating provided thereon which solidifies upon application for a frictional engagement with the trousers.
While ;I have shown and described gpreiterred embodiments ofrmy invention, 111011101) want to limit thereby the-scope of .my invention, andi-t is mmderstoo'd that changes and variations maybe zresorted to in the elements :and combinations,
and I reserve my rights to all such changes :and .yariations, which are within the :spirit 'of this specification, and the-scope Of the claim i-hereunto appended.
What I claim .as new :and want ito protect by :Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a garment hanger having a suspension de- Vice with a downwardly extending :stem, =-a zpla-te with :an ear projecting from its ;p1ane inaving an aperture therein whereby .it may slide "on said stem, a moi-led spring around :the stem "its upper end-secured thereto-and its'loweri'end pressing on :said ean-anarm at eacih-side-of the lower endof sa'id -stemend pivotal-1y secured thereto, a transverse member pivoted at the end of each am, and --a :li-nk ,membter pivlot-ed at each .side of said plate, the "IOWEIKGHQIS of said link members being pivoted to 'thewarm on the respective side of the hanger, the combination therewith of, a portion for said :Dlateextending .upwardlyfrom'sai'deear, the upper :margi-n ofwsaid portion beingrnrledand -a transverse rod secured withi-nssaid curled ma'rgin, the ends of said rod extending "beyond said plate to serve aszg rips for the fingers of the laser.
