Patented pr. l1, 1950 UNITED STATES IPATENT OFFICE 2,503,962 A. TOILET Melvin F. Moen, Waukesha, Wis.
, Application March 4, 1948, Serial No. 13,007
2 Claims.
The invention relates to toilets and more particularly to toilets for summer cottages or for cottages in climates in which the temperatures do not go below freezing.
The general object of the invention is to provide a toilet which may be installed adjacent to or in a wing of a cottage of the type above described and will be sanitary and free from objectionable odors. More particularly, the toilet includes a tiltable bowl, means for flushing the bowl, and an exterior-ly vented pit or waste storage space disposed outside of the cottage or building housing the toilet and into which the bowl discharges, said pit having a removable top cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toilet of the character above described having a tiltable bowl with means for mounting said bowl in the seat support so that it may be readily removed therefrom for cleaning if necessary.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toilet of the character above described having a tiltable bowl discharging into a storage space, which bowl acts as a closure between said space and the seat housing of the toilet.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly deilned by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a vertical sectional view through a toilet embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, parts being broken away;
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the pivot structure for the bowl, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates an enclosing structure, such as an outhouse or a wing of a dwelling, provided with an entrance 6 and a floor 1, and 8 designates a wood line pit whose top opening 9 is normally covered by a slab I of concrete provided with a vent pipe II but which cover may be moved to one side of the opening 9, if desired. The pit 8 is disposed outside of structure and is connected with an opening I2 in the floor I by an upper lateral extension or passage I3.
A toilet seat housing or support I5 of sheet metal having a hinged top cover I3, upon which is mounted a toilet seat I'I providedwith a cover I8 hinged thereto at I9, has side walls 20 which at their lower ends project down into the opening I2 and which carry an angled metal member 2I adapted to engage the floor 'I about the opening I2 except for that portion bounded by the 2 wall 22 of the structure 5 to mount the support upon the floor.
A water storage receptacle 23 is mounted on a shelf 24 on the outside of the structure 5 and has a discharge pipe 25 leading from the bottom thereof, through a wall of the structure 5 and into the upper portion of the support I5 in which it discharges, the discharge being controlled by a manually operated push type valve 26 disposed adjacent the seat I1. This pipe 25 may have a depending extension 2'I connected to it by an elbow iitting 28 and which extension may be swung toward the wall 22 in case it is necessary to remove the bowl hereinafter described.
A bowl 29 of sheet metal and of scoop-like form is provided with oppositely disposed trunnions 30 which are fulcrumed in bearings provided in opposite sides of the support I5. Preferably each bearing is formed by a half bearing 3| iixed to the support at the end of a vertically extending slot 32 therein and a half bearing 33 on a plate 34 slidahly mounted on flanges 4I) at the sides of the slot 32 so that when the cover I6 is tipped up to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. the plates 34 may be removed, and the bowl 29 may then be turned at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1 and then lifted upwardlv out of said housing. the extension 21, if used. having been turned toward the wall 22 as previously described to prevent interference with the bowl. One of the trunnions 30 extends beyond the wall of the support I5 and has a lever arm 35 secured thereto provided with a manually operable handle 36 disposed adjacent the toilet seat I1 which may be swung upwardly to tip the bowl 29 to a position in which its contents are discharged into the pit 8.
It is to be noted that when the bowl 29 is in the position shown in Fig. l, the forward end 3'I of its discharge end 38 is engaged withv the lower edge 39 of the wall of the support I 5 adjacent the pit, and it is normally held in this position due to the greater weight of the main body portion of the bowl acting on the opposite side, that is, the center of gravity of the bowl is offset to the right of it pivots. The bowl preferably has a close t with the sides of the housing I 5, so that it acts as a closure for the lower part thereof, and therefore, blocks the passage of any objectionable odors which. however, are free to escape from the exteriorly disposed vent pipe II. Also the discharge of water from the receptacle 23 into the bowl serves to thoroughly flush and clean the same. The receptacle 23 may be charged with fresh water, or it may be arranged to receive rain water.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims.
What I claim asmy invention is:
1. In a toilet of the type described, the combination with an enclosing structure for the toilet, og'I-.an-geaterioly'ventedstorage space disposed outside of -and below said 'structure and connected at one side of its upper end to an opening in the floor of said structure, a toilet seat, a support for said seat mounted over said opening, a bowl tiltably mounted on said support partly projecting into said space andeadapted to discharge directly into said space. l
2. A structure as claimed in claim 1 in which 4 the bowl has its discharge end projecting into the upper end of said storage space and forming a stop for maintaining the bowl in an operative position.
