ROTARY BLOTTER Ernst J ens Johan Henriksen,Copenhagen,-v
Denmark Application April 18, 1946, Serial No. 663,155
2 Claims.
This invention relates toso called rotary blotters, namely blotting devicesinwhich the blotting sheets are disposed as a cylindrical body and adaptedto be rolled over the surface on; which the ink is to be blotted.
The main object of myinvention is to provide a rotary blotter having simple means whereby the blotter carrying roller may conveniently be removed from and inserted in its hood or casing thereby enabling the blotting material to be readily replaced.
In the rotary blotters heretofore proposed difficulty has been experienced in extracting the blotter carrying roller from its casing or-hood, inasmuch as the means for releasing the roller from its bearings in the hood have so far been inaccessible from the outside.
With the object of overcoming this drawback my invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a rotary blotter embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken approximately on the line 11-11 in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view showing the blotter carrying roller partly removed from its casing or hood.
Fig. t is a side view of a trunnion carrying disc used for journaling the roller within the casing.
Fig. 5 is a traverse section of a sleeve used for locating the disc shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view through another embodiment of the rotary blotter.
The blotter carrying roller consists of a tube 2 on which the absorbent blotting sheets are disposed as a cylindrical surface or body 3, the blotting carrying roller 2, 3 being rotably mounted within a casing or hood I.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4 a cylindrical sleeve or the like t having flanges 4a is inserted in the tube 2 at either end thereof. A disc 5 as shown in detail in Fig. l is adapted to fit within the cavity of the sleeve i which at its inner end forms a conical bearing 8 adapted to support the innermost end 3' of a trunnion t mounted on the disc 5 and projecting therethrough. A spring 9 is inserted in the sleeve 4 as shown in Fig. 5 and adapted to influence the disc 5 so as to exert an outwardly directed axial pressure on the disc 5 carrying the trunnion or pivot 5 thereby causing same to be held firmly against the bearings l provided in the end por tions of the hood i, when the roller 2, 3 is mounted within said hood.
The end portions or side walls iAoi the hood l'extend only a short distance ,belowthe bearings 1 so as. to permit the lower portions 5a of'the trunnion carryingdiscs 5 to'be accessible from without assshown .in;Figs. 1 to 3;.
When theblotter-carrying roller; 2, 3 is-tobe removed from or inserted into its hood i the discs 5, 5a are grasped by the fingers of a hand from without the hood as shown in Fig. 3 (indicated in dotted lines) whereby the said discs are depressed axially within the sleeves t against the action of the springs 9. The trunnions 5 carried by the discs 5 are thus moved towards the middle of the tube 2 thereby disengaging their ends from the bearings l, and the blotter carrying roller 2, 3 may readily be removed from or inserted into the hood l as may be realized from Fig. 3.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 the trunnion carrying discs 5, ii of Figs. 1 to 4 and the sleeves 4 have been replaced by a pair of cylindrical discs l I which are spaced apart by a spring I 3 co-axially disposed Within the tube 2. The discs 1 I project beyond the ends of the tube 2 so as to enable them to be journaled in bearings 22 in the hood I. As will be seen from Fig. 6 the discs H protrude somewhat below the bearings I2 so as to enable the discs H to be grasped from the outside of the hood and be pressed together in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3.
Without departing from the scope of the invention the side walls la of the hood i may wholly or partly cover the end surfaces of the discs 5 or H in which case the said walls should be provided with holes, cutouts or other apertures through which the discs may be grasped from the outside of the hood and the roller released from the hood substantially as described and illustrated. The invention is not restricted to the precise details herein set forth with regard to the means used for disengaging the blotter carrying roller from its bearings in the hood. It can thus be seen that there has been provided according to this invention a rotary blotter device comprising a hood having depending side walls, bearings adjacent the lowermost ends of said side walls, a blotter carrying tubular roller having an axis extending above said lowermost ends of said side walls, a trunnion axially projecting from each end of said roller and adapted to engage a respective bearing of said hood, bearings seated within opposite ends of said roller, spring actuated discs seated within said bearings of said roller and supporting said trunnions, a trunnion extension on each disc projecting into said bearings of said roller for support and guidance therein, said discs and said trunnions extending normally beyond said ends of said roller and belowthe ends of the side walls of said hood to permit axial pressure to be exerted on said discs for release of said trunnions from said hood bearings and of said roller from said hood, each of said bearings of said roller comprises a sleeve and a flange, said flange abutting against the roller ends, said springs for actuating said discs being located within said sleeves.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. Arotaryblotter device comprising a hood having depending side walls, bearings adjacent the lowermost ends of said side walls, a blotter carrying tubular roller having an axis extending above said lowermost ends of said side Walls, a trunnion axially projecting from each end of said roller and adapted to engage a respective bearing of said hood, bearings seated within opposite ends of said roller, spring actuated discs seated within said bearings of said roller and supporting said trunnions, a trunnion extension on each disc projecting into said bearings of said roller for support and guidance therein, said discs and said trunnions extending normally beyond said ends of said roller and below the ends of the side walls of said hood to permit axial pressure to be exerted on said discs for release of said trunnions from said hood bearings and of said roller from said hood.
2. A rotary blotter device according to claim 1 wherein each of the bearings of said roller comprises a sleeve and a flange, said flanges abutting against the roller ends, said springs for actuating said discs being centrally located within said sleeves.
