ADJUSTABLE SHOULDER PAD FOR GARMENTS Max Brief, San Francisco, Calif.

My invention relates to garments or clothing and more particularly to an adjustable shoulder pad for garments, especially mens coats, and the like.

The purpose of the invention is to provide simple and novel means for lifting a shoulder portion of a coat or similar garment to enable a tailor to properly fit said portion of the garment to a person, one of whose shoulders may be higher than the other.

The adjustable shoulder pad of the present invention includes an adjusting device which embodies two pivoted sections, each having a convexly rounded inner side edge and a straight transverse inner end edge, while one section has a straight outer side edge at obtuse angles to its transverse inner end edge and a tapered outer end, and the other section has a straight outer side edge at acute angles to its straight transverse inner end edge and a tapered outer end, with calibrations or index markings along the outer side edge of said other section cooperating with the transverse inner end edge of the one section for indicating the degree of relative adjustment of the sections in raising a shoulder portion of a garment.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a coat partly broken away to show the adjustable shoulder pad for lifting or raising the shoulder portion of a garment, and sewed between the outer cloth and the linin of the garment.

Referring to the drawing in detail, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a garment coat, 6a shoulder portion of the coat, I a sleeve of the coat, and 8 a sleeve of a shirt worn under the coat. The present shoulder pad is disposed between the outer cloth 9 and inner lining ID of the coat whose shoulder seam is indicated at H. (01. 2-268) osed 2. padding M of cotton wadding or the like and an inner flannel layer l6, as is common in the tailorin art, especially in mens coats. The shoulder pad adjusting device I5 of the present invention is disposed between the padding I 4 and the flannel layer I6, and the several parts are suitably stitched together as at l1.

The adjusting device l5 comprise two pivoted sections including a front section I8 and a rear or back section l9. Each of the sections l8 and I9 has a convexly rounded inner side edge 20 and a straight inner transverse edge 2|, while the rear or back section l9 has a straight outer side edge 22 at obtuse angles to its transverse edge 2| and a tapered outer end 23. The sections l8 and I9 are substantially triangular in shape. The front section 8 has similar edges 2|] and 2| and a substantially straight outer side edge 24 at acute angles to its straight edge 2|, and has a tapered outer end 25 like the end 23. The edge 4 adjacent the edge 2| of section I8 is provided with graduations 26 cooperating with the.edge 2| of the section 9. To permit this, the sections l8 and I9 are pivotally connected at their inner corners as indicated at 21 by a tubular rivet or the like so that one section swings relative to the other in overlapping relation at segments thereof as at 28 at their transverse edges 2| with their edges 22 and 24 in alignment when the device is arched as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, to raise the shoulder portion of the coat, or to lower the same. The sections l8 and I9 are produced or blanked out of flexible plastic, fibre, cardboard, or similar flexible sheet material which is relatively hard but sufliciently stiff to give support to the shoulder portion 6 of the coat and its padding, when stitched thereto. By this means, the shoulder portion of the garment may be adjusted, to give better form and for overcoming deformities as sloping or lopsided shoulders.

When the sections l8 and I9 have been relatively adjusted as desired, they are stitched to the other members of the pad to secure them in adjusted relation.
