Another important object of the present inventionfis to provide agage attachment for metal bending machines including a base and a' plurality of adjustable stops which arequickly and readily arranged to limiting the inward position- /ing of asheet of metal that is to be bent into avdesired shape, y thus Areducing Athe normal time for handling andwgaging during production bending.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a gage attachment for metal bending machines and more-particularly ffor a micrometer back gage for .power brakes that is quickly and readily applied to or removedvfrom the adjustable vgage support 'of'fa metalbendingmachine in a convenient and safe manner.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a gage attachment for metal bending machines that is small and compact in structure, strong and reliable in use, simple and practical in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the present invention and showing in dotted lines the manner in which a sheet of metal is bent to form a box;
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4 4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the stop pins used in conjunction with the present invention;
Figure G is a perspective view of a further of the stop pins used in conjunction With the present invention;
Figure 7 is a top plan view of the angle stop used in conjunction with the present invention, and with parts thereof broken away;

Referring now to .the drawings in. detail,` ywhere-- in yfor.the;purpose of .illustrationthere is disclosed a preferred embodiment .of `the `present invention, thenumerally representsa metal bending machine generally, comprising :an adjustable gage support J2, andan Aadjustable diesupport I4 that `removably supports a female die I6, and .a footoperated companion die support I8 that-removably supports amale die 20. The numeral'` v22 represents .anelongated .substantially rectangular base plate lwhich .is providedA with V.a pair of `longitudinal :slots f 24.adja cent its ends 26 and 28 that slidably engage the usual holding bolts 30 carried by the gage support I2. The upper portions 32 of these slots 24 are enlarged to engage the head portions 34 of the holding bolts 30. The forward longitudinal edge 36 of the base plate 22 is beveled for a purpose which will later be more fully apparent. Extending substantially vertically through the base plate 22 is a plurality of transversely spaced rows of longitudinally spaced apertures or pin seats 38 that frictionally engage the reduced shank portions 4U of a plurality of gage pins 42.
Adjacent the rear longitudinal edge 44 of the base plate 22 is a plurality of longitudinally spaced internally threaded apertures 46 one of which selectively registers with one of a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures 48 formed in the longer leg 58 of a substantially L-shaped stop member or angulated member 52 which includes an upstanding vertical leg 54. Threaded, preferably Allen screws 56 are employed for removably securing the stop members 52 to the base plate 22 with the head portions 58 of the bolts 56 recessed in the enlarged upper ends 60 of the apertures 48.
Should it be desirable to gage to a more precise dimension than could be accomplished by the stop pin 42, a further plurality of stop pins 62 may be employed having head portions 64 of a smaller diameter than the head portion of the pins 42.
In practical use of the present invention in bending a sheet of metal 66 into the form of rectangle or rectangular box, rst the sheet 66 is bent adjacent its inner end to form a ange 68 with the beveled edge 36 acting as the stop or gage as shown best in ligure l0 of the drawings. Next the ange 68 is engaged with upstanding chine including a male die, a complementary female die, and an adjustable gage support, a base carried by the gage support, said base having a 'beveled longitudinal edge for frictionally engaging one edge of a sheet of metal, and means adjustably carried by the base for gaging the posi- The remaining steps of forming a longitudinal l side, a transverse side rigid to side 10 and a forward longitudinal side may be accomplished by 'the use of the gage pins, either 42 or 62, the edge 36 of the base plate 22 or the upstanding leg 54 of the L-shaped member or members 52.
Obviously, the pins 42 and 62, the edge 36 of the base plate 22, or the L-shaped member or members 52 may be employed for use in gaging or limiting the inward positioning of a sheet of metal to the discs iii and 20 independently of each other or in conjunction with each other to facilitate the bending of metal or the like in a more convenient and precise manner than was heretofore possible.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope oi the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a metal bending mationing of a sheet of metal relative to the dies.
2. The combination of claim l wherein said base includes a plurality of recesses, and said means includes a plurality of stop pins removably carried by selected recesses.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said base includes an elongated substantially rectangular plate, a plurality of longitudinally and transversely spaced recesses provided in said plate, and a plurality of upstanding stop pins carried by selected recesses. y
