Description

(No Model.)
A. W. MORGAN.
FORGE 'TUYERR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED W. MORGAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR T() LOUISA G. MORGAN, OF SAME PLACE.
FO RG E-TUYERE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,161, dated November 29, 1881.
' Application filed April 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern:
'Be it known that I, .ALFRED W. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Variable-Blast Tuyere-Iron for Blacksmiths, oi' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tuyere-irons in which a rotatable center piece having different-sized radial nozzles operates in conjunction with a tuyere-iron case having a detachable head with tuyereholes above and a dirt-trap below; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a tuyere-iron with an adjustable and variable conductor for the blast, by means of which a large fire for heavy work or a small one with an intense heat for small work may be kept up; second, to afford facilities for adjusting the variable -blast-conductor, to produce any size fire required; and, third, to provide a means for discharging cinders and dirt from the tuyereiron shell and dirt-trap below. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of the entire machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the rotatable adjustable variable blastconductor; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the indicator hand-wheel for operating the variable blast-conductor, showing the spokes of various sizes corresponding with their respective various-sized nozzles in the rotatable blastconductor.
Similar letters in the different views refer to like parts.
A represents a cylindrical case having an opening, w, in its vtop to receive the tuyerehead B, also an opening, w', below, which forms a connection wit-h the blast-pipe E at the side, and the dirt-chamber F below. The dirt-chamber F has a hole, H, in its bottom, which is closed automatically by the ball-valve Gr.
Inside of the cylindrical shell A is the rotatable adjustable variable blast-conductor O, which may be made with two or more nozzles. In the case illustrated four nozzles are used,
radiating from the center. These nozzles are 5o constructed as shown-that is, the nozzle O is large enough to distribute `a blast through charge the air through the vtuyere-holes a2 a3,
and the nozzle G4 discharges the air only Ythrough the center tuyere-hole, a3. All the nozzles C C2 C3 C4 form branches of one com- 6o inon chamber, and the ends of the nozzles are turned in a lathe, so as to fit snugly within the case, yet loosely enough to permit the blastconductor to be turned freely for adjustment within said case. Thus when the nozzle G2 is w65 over the opening w of the case A the nozzle O is free to discharge air through all the tuyereholes ofthe head B; but when the nozzle C is over the hole w,.then the nozzle (l2 discharges the air through the holes a a2 a3, as 7o before described. Thus as each nozzle O C2 G3 G4 is brought opposite the tuyere-holes in the head B air is discharged relative to the size of the nozzle. Between the nozzles C2 and O4 is a segment-rim, l), which, when adjusted over the hole w', forms a cut-off and permits the dirt and cinders which may accumulate in the dust-chamber F to be discharged through the opening H when theyalve Gr is raised and the blast applied through the pipe E. All 8o dirt which may fall into the cylinder A is wiped into the hole w' by the nozzles as the blast-conductor is turned around. When the chamber F needs cleaning, the bali-valveG is raised and the dirt. blown out, as before described. f
The rotatable blast-conductor C has trunnions K K', one on each side, the trunnion K operating in a socket formed inthe solid head of the cylinder A, while the trunnion K', which 9o has a square hole, 7c, in it, operates in the cylinder-head A. The cylinder-head A is secured to the cylinder by bolts g g, made fast in the lugsff. The square rod;J titsjin the hole k of the trunnion K, also in the square hole I of the indicator-wheel L. The wheel L has spokes G5 C6 CFl O8. Each spoke varies in size to indicate the position of its respective nozzle.
Thus when the spoke G5 is turned up it indicates that the largest nozzle (lf is-in position under the tuyere-holes. The spoke U6 when turned up indicates that the nozzle C2 is under the tuyere-holes, and so on with the other spokes and nozzles.
The head B may be a solid one with tuyereholes, or a waterjacket head having a chamber around the tuyere-holes to contain water, as shown in Fig. 1, in which B represents the head, B the inlet for water, B2 the outlet, and B3 the chamber surrounding the tuyereholes to contain water, for preventing the tuyere-head from burning.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Inatuyere-iron,thecylinderA, with blastpipe E and dust-chamber F, combined with the head A and bolts g g, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a tuyere-iron, the cylinder A, combined with the rotatable adjustable variable blastconductor C and the headB, with tuyere-holes,
substantially as shown and described.
3. The rotatable adjustable variable blastconductor C, constructed with trunnions K K and various-sized radiating nozzles, substantially as shown and described.
4. The rotatable adjustable variable blastconductor C, having a segment-rim D, between two nozzles, substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.
5. The rotatable adjustable variable blastconductor C, having its trunnions K, provided with a hole, k, combined with the rod J and indicator hand-Wheel L, having spokes C5 CG C7 C, of several sizes, each size spoke indicating the size of nozzle of the blast-conductor C which is in line with it, substantially as shown and described.
6. 1n combination with the tuyere-iron case, consisting of the cylinder A, blast-pipe E, and dust-chamber F, the ball-valve G, the variable blast-conductor C, and head B, with tuyereholes a c a2 a3, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED W. HORGAN.
