(Cl. 45-80) This invention relates to an adjustable book and magazine holder, and more particularly, to a book and magazine holding device for holding the book or magazine in any position for the convenience of a reader, whether the reader is sitting upright or inclined, or whether lying in any of several positions.

A major object of this invention is to provide an improved book and magazine holder which is eiiicient, simple, practical in construction, and which will be of special benefit to handicapped persons by holding the bookvor magazine while permitting adjustment thereof to the proper angle and line of vision so that only one hand is required to turn pagesand the reader will have the convenience of reading inany sitting or lying position.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved book and magazine holder having a dual adjustment so that the book or magazine can be moved in a vertical plane to and adjusted forward position and then moved to the right or left and locked in finally adjusted position in which position there will be no interference to the turning of pages.

A further object of `this invention is to provide an improved book and magazine holder for mechanically locking a book or magazine in position and in which hinge means are provided for varying the angle of inclination of the reading surface in a vertical plane, and in which additional means are provided for adjusting the reading surface to the right or the left While in said angle of inclination so that a book or magazine in the holder can be read by a reader in an upright sitting position, in an inclined sitting po- `sition, or from varying lying positions, including right and left sides, while maintaining the proper line and angle of vision.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a book and magazine holder for relieving the reader of the tiring and nerve upsetting strain of holding books, magazines, journals and the like and having adjustable means to at all times insure that the reading plane is at the proper angle to provide for correct Vision so that the readers hands may be at rest' at all times except when turning a page which can be accomplished merely with one hand.

Still a furtherobject of this invention is to provide a book and magazine holder for'clamping a book and magazine in place and having means to hold the bookv and magazine at any open position and yet enabling a simple turning of pagesA andhaving meansl to holdleach page after it has been turned, and in which the entire holder with the reading matter attached in fixed position can be readily put aside and kept ready for instant resumption of reading at any later time.

It is still another object of this invention to provide a book or magazine holder having a book or magazine rest and clamping means for engaging the tops of the book or magazine covers, and in which extensible means are provided to accommodate books or magazines of varying height, and in which the book rest is provided with page guards for holding the pages as they are turned and which permit easy turning of pages.

lt is still a further object of this invention to provide a book or magazine holder having afoldable upright which may be braced and locked in a number of angular positions, and having a rotatable carrier on the upright which may be rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise and locked in adjusted position.

Figure '7 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the' upright showing a modied locking means for the rotatable carrier; and

Figure 8 is a sectional detail view taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 7, and showing the modified locking means.

Referring to the drawing, reference numeral I refers to a base member and numeral 2 refers to an upright hinged to the base member I at 3.. .To the rear of the upright 2 is suitably secured a hinge plate 4 to which a brace or strut 5 is hinged at 6. A series of anchor sleeves I are suitably aiiixed to the base member I, as clearly shown in Figure 1. The sleeves I may be attached singly to the base member I or may be mounted on or formed integrally with a plate 8 for attachment to the base member I in a series, A

The ends 9 of the strut 5 are inturned, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 3, and the strut 5 is of such resiliency as to permit the ends 9 to be spread for insertion into the ends of the sleeves 1. Thus the str-ut or brace 5 may be aixed to any one of the sleeves 'I to adjust the inclination of the upright 2 from practically a vertical position to one of substantial backward incline.

A rotatable carrier `Ii! is pivotally mounted on a bolt II-passing through carrier IIJ and mounting same on the upright 2, as shown. A pin, eyelet, or other suitable means may be used in lieu of the bolt I I within the scope of this invention. A rest, denoted generally by reference numeral I2, is Afixed to the bottom of the rotatable carrier il), and is composed of two pieces, aledge I3 and a page guard Ie. Theledge I3 ,as shown in Figure 1 is angular in cross-section and is suitably aflixed to the bottom of the rotatable carrier I0. The vertical` leg of the ledge I3 is providedwith an opening l5 for receiving a -bolt I6., passing through .an arcuate slot I in upright 2, for a purpose to be described hereinafter. The horizontaly leg I3 of ledge I3 .is provided with an opening I8, receiving a bolt 20 which pivotally secures page guard Id tothe ledge I3. The page guard I4 is provided with upper and lower ilanges 2 I and 22,respectively, for receiving leg I8 therebetween, as .clearly shown in Figure l. The page guard I4 is ,provided with a pair of upwardly extending wing portions 23 which are adapted to press against the open pages of the book ina self-adjusting and equalizing manner due to the pivot at ZIB. .An extensible plate 2.5is mounted for slidable movement behind the rotatablepcarrer II'I, the mounting icon-.sisting ofa bolt 21 xed in lcarrier Ill forming a guide for the..'Sl.ot. 2B in extensible plate 25. Thus, plate 25 can, be Amoved up or down, movement being limited only bythe length of slot 23 to accommodate books andmagazines ofsdiierent heights.

2At.the top .of iextensibleplate 2-5 are located a pair of adjustable Aclamps .28,shown in detail in Figures. and 5, adaptedto ,clamp the iront and back-covers of the book or magazine against the carrier I0 or the plate 25. The clamps 28, each comprise a pair of integral` spring-like ears mounted on. a lever A29, both levers being-.pivoted on' thesame pin 30. The clamps are adapted to swing upwardly from the position shown Yin Figure 2.and when swung back: to, theFigure 2 position, the book cover may beV held against the `carrier I0 rand plate 25 by the ears encompassing the top of the cover and the top portion of plate '25.

LA guard 3l is provided as a xed part of base I and is primarily `for holding the vbottom `edge ofa newspaper, journal, or other matter too large to be locked into position on the carrier I0.

As indicated above, the rotatable carrier I0 is mounted on bolt II for swinging movement in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. This movement is limited to an arc of about i. e., limited by the movement of bolt I6 in arcuate slot I1. A knob or nut 32 is threaded onto bolt I5 so that the carrier I0 maybe locked in adjusted arcuate *position `'by tightening the knob 32 on bolt i6. The knob 32 also serves as a handle for swinging the carrier I0 to adjusted position. Thus, as the carrier I0 is rotated, the readingy matter locked thereon will also be rotated to the adjusted desired position for best reading.

A inodied form of locking means for the rotatable carrieris shown in Figures 7 and 8 wherein a series of holes 33 are provided at spacedi. intervals along an arcuate path in the upright 2'. The bottom of the carrier I0 is provided; with a1 bolt having a rounded tip 35 iitting into any one of the holes 33 in a springlikemanner. Thus, a mere turning of the carrier. I0' will carry the bolt 34 into association with the -proper hole v33 acting as a stop and holding member. This. modification eliminates the screwA knob 32.

-W hen not in use, the book or magazine holder of this invention maybe folded to a flat position by turning upright 2 against the base I after disconnecting the strutv 5.

The dual-angular adjustment features of this device, about hinge 3 .and about pivot I I, combine to provide a ready lmeans of fixing the book or magazine into the proper ieldsof vision and light regardless of whether oneis sitting upright in a chair or bed, in a semi-reclining position, 4or is lying on the back or on either side. The base I, if desired, can be rested on the chest of a reader lying on the back, or on the bed itself .on either side, thus relieving the. hands and arms of all strain.

While certain specific embodiments of this invention have been shown, it will be understood that lvarious modiiications--may be made within the spirit of the invention. Therefore, no limitations on the invention are intended other than are imposed by'the Scope. ofthe appended claims.

`What is claimed is 1.A book Vand magazineholder comprising a base,` an upright ,hinged tosaid baseior angular movement to and from said base, means. iorlocking said upright in adjusted angular position, a carrier rotatably. mountedonaid.upright, a book rest at the bottom of, said .,carriei, a page guard, `said page guard includingat least .one substantially horizontally-disposed, flange anda pair of integrally .connected and substantially vertically-extending wings or retaining right and left pages of an open book in position, substantially vertically-extending pivot means pivotally connecting said horizontal flange of said page guard to said rest, said-"pagejguard being constructed and arranged' to swing about its pivot automatically to adaptsaidwings to bear against opposite pages of an Openbook irrespective of thepointat whichthe book is open.

2. A book and magazineholder comprising. a, base, .an upright4 hinged to :said base @forangular movement to and from said base, a carrier rotatably mounted on said upright, a book rest at the bottom of said carrier, a page guard mounted on said rest for holding the pages of an open book on said rest, a vertically extensible plate mounted on said carrier, a pin and slot connection limiting movement of said extensible plate, and clamps at the upper end of said extensible plate adapted to clamp the front and back covers of a book on said rest, means pivotally connecting said clamps to said plate for pivotal movement in a plane parallel to the plane of said plate to and from cover-clamping and cover-releasing positions, :said extensible plate being movable to any extended position for accommodation of books of ldifferent heights.

A book and magazine holder comprising a base, an upright hinged to said base for angular movement relative thereto, a carrier rotatably mounted on said upright for clockwise or counterclockwise movement relative thereto in a plane parallel to the plane of said upright, an arcuate series of spaced detente formed in said upright equidistant from the center of rotation of said carrier, and a round ended bolt mounted in said carrier for selective locking engagement with any one of said detents to hold said carrier in adjusted position, said bolt and detents being constructed and arranged to be sprung into or out of engagement upon manual rotation of said carrier.

In a book and magazine holder, including a carrier adapted to support an open book in a reading position, the improvement comprising means for clamping book covers to said carrier, comprising a pair of clamps, means mounting said -clamps on said carrier for adjustment vertically thereof to accommodate books of different heights, and means pivotally connecting said clamps to said last-named means for pivotal movement in a plane parallel to the plane of said carrier to and from cover-clamping and coverreleasing positions.

A book and magazine holder, comprising a base, an upright hinged to said base for angular movement relative thereto, a carrier rotatably mounted on. said upright for clockwise or counterclock'wise movement relative thereto in a plane parailel to the plane of said upright, one of said upright and carrier being formed to provide an arcuate series of spaced detente therein equidistant from the center of rotation of said carrier, and a spring latch carried by the other of said carrier and upright for selective locking engagement with a selected one of said detents to hold said carrier in an adjusted position.
