MOSES ROBESON, OF GALENA, KANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,999, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed September 13, 1881. (No inodell To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES RoBEsoN, of Galena, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Im- 5 provement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of two draw- Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 an end view of one of the draw-heads.
The object of my invention is to provide a car-coupling by means of which two cars can I 5 be coupled together and uncoupled without running them together while the link is being adjusted, whereby danger to life and limb in coupling cars shall be obviated.
The draw head A is constructed with an opening or recess, a, which I prefer to make V-shaped, and which is formed in the upper surface thereof, so that the bottom or angle of the recess shall lie below the longitudinal center of the draw-head. This recess extends through the outer end of the draw-head,so
that two such draw-heads may be coupled together by means of an ordinary coupling-link, b, by lowering the link into the two recessed draw-heads in a vertical plane.
tends through it from side to side in a vertically-slantingdirection, so that when the coupling-pin cis inserted therein the point of the pin shall be lower than the head to prevent the 5 same from becoming accidentally displaced.
effect of the inclination of the pins upon the Each draw- 0 head is provided with a pin-hole, which exlink shall serve to hold the latter near the center of the draw-head.
For further strengthening the wrought or castiron draw-head, the bottom thereof maybe provided with strips or re-enforced in any suitable manner.
With this construction the ordinary coupling-link can be used and cars of different heights easily coupled together.
WVhen it is desired to couple or uncouple the cars all that is necessary is to run the ears together, so that the space between the pins of two adjacent draw-heads shall be less than the interior longitudinal diameter ofthe link. The link may then be released or secured in position, as the case may be, without further moving of the cars, and thus all danger ofinjury to the brakeman is avoided.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to construct a draw-head with a recess at the top, into which a link may be inserted laterally instead of longitudinally; but in such a coupling horizontal pins'have been used and springs or catches are necessary to hold the pins in position. It will be seen, however, that in my invention the pins are adapted to remain in position without such expedients.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is- The combination of the draw-heads A A, having V-shaped recesses a a formed in their upper surfaces, and inclined pin-holes passing through them from side to side, the straight link I), and the oppositely-inclined couplingpins 0 c, substantially as shown and described.
MOSES ROBESON.
