CARCOUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,968, dated November 13, 1888.
Application tiled April 19, 1888. Serial No.271,136. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANDREW JACKSON PICKARD and GEORGE MELsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Eugene Oity, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car Couplings, of which the followingis a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in lo car-couplings; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of our improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ofthe same. Fig. 3 is i5 aperspeetive View of the link detached. Fig.
4 isa perspective view of the link-follower detached.
Referring tothe drawings by letter,A designates the draw-bar of a car, and B the recessed zo draw-head attached thereto, which draw-head is provided with the upper andlower couplingpin holes, b b', respectively, and the mouth b2, having the inwardlyconverging top, bottom, and sides to direct the entering link. The recess b3 on the inner side ofthe mouth is rectangular. The link C has its ends c flattened on their outer edges, for a purpose hereinafter eX- plained. D is the couplingpin, having the rounded point d, as shown. E is the link-follower, rectangular in shape, and situated within the rectangular recess b3. The said follower has the dat-bottomed transverse groove c in its front end, the vertical opening e at a proper point of its length, and the stem c2. projecting from its inner end. Fis a pin resting in the opening e and falling by gravity When the follower ispushed in into the recess f in the floor of the recess b3, which recess f has the inner inclined side, f, and the outer ver- 4o tical side or shoulder, f2, against which the outer side of the pin F abuts and retains the follower within the draw-head against the action of the spiral spring G,Which surrounds the stem e2 of the follower, and the inner end of which bears against the end of the recess b3 or 45 against the block g, inserted therein.
It is evident that the spiral springs in the opposite draw-heads will preventthe link having any loose motion.
The squared outer edge of the end of the 5o link rests in the flatbottomed groove in the outer end of the corresponding follower, the pressure of which, caused by the spring in rear thereof, holds the link against the pin inside its bend and keeps it horizontal. 55
Before coupling, the point of the couplingpin rests on the top of the follower, and when the latter is driven inward by the entering link the pin falls through the link and couples the draw-heads.
Having described our invention, We claim- The herein-described car-coupling, comprising the draw-head having a recess, f, in its oor, provided with a vertical shoulder, f2, at its front end and With an inclined rear end, f', 65 the followerhaving a vertical opening, c', near its rear end and provided in its front end With the transverse flat-bottomed groove e, .the pin F,playing freely in the vertical opening e and having its lower end resting in the recessf, and the coupling-link having at ends adapted to engage in the Hat-bottomed groove c, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto afxed oui-signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW JACKSON ricKARD. GEORGE MEEsoN.
