The inner-l rod M. is 'providedwithxa keeper disc :Z'daxially of said inner rod M: and housed intthe rhollovg :ot the. flange l 6- and spaced from thezco'nengages against the cover plate |6. Since the control disc 24 engages the inner end of the knob l8, and since the discs 24 and 26 are separated by the shoulder 21, they are held against longitudinal motion but they are free to be turned. A peg 28 projects from and is eccentric of the keeper disc 26 and engages in a short arcuate slot 29 formed in the control disc 24 in order that said discs 24 and 26 may be turned together, except for a slight amount of play produced by said short slot 29.
A push button 39 is slidably mounted eccentrically of and through said flange It. The push button 30 is connected with an enlargement 3| which slidably engages in a complementary opening 32 formed in the flange ID, by which the push button 30 is slidabl disposed parallel to the axes of the rods l4 and 22. This enlargement 3| is slightly shallower than the depth of the space between the outer wall l and the cover plate l6 and limits sliding of the push button 30 from an out position to an in position. In an out position the enlargement 3| engages the outer wall l5, and in an in position the enlargement 3| engages the cover plate H3.
The control disc 24 is formed with a peripheral cut 34 having cam shaped edges 35 complementar to any cooperative with a cam 36 formed on the enlargement 3|. This cam 36 has inclined surfaces 3'! adapted to mate with the inclined surfaces 35 in the in position of the push button 30. These surfaces 35 and 3! are so inclined that when the control disc 24 is turned, the surfaces 35 cam outwards against the surfaces 31 in order to move the push button 30 to its out position.
Said keeper disc 26 is formed with a keeper slot 39 cooperative with a projection 49 formed on the enlargement 3| for latching the keeper disc 26 from turning when said push button 30 is in its in position. Said enlargement 3| is also provided with a space 4| between said cam 36 and said projection 49 through which the control disc 24 may turn when said push button 30 is in its out position. Fig. 1 shows the push button 30 in its out position and it should be noted that the projection 49 is to the outside of the keeper slot 39 so that the keeper disc 26 is free to turn. In this position of the push button 30, the control disc 24 is free to pass through the space 4|.
An expansion spring 45 is mounted along a pair of opposed grooves 46 and 41 formed along the periphery of said control disc 24 and the outer wall l5 of the hollow flange I. More particularly, the groove 41 is formed along the control disc, while the groove 46 is formed along the inner face of the outer wall I5 of the flange ID. This spring 45 has its ends resting upon the ends of the grooves 46 and 41. More particularly, the
The inner rod M is associated with a door knob 50. This door knob 50 has a reduced end 5| passing through the wall 52 of a hollow flange 53 mounted on the door The door knob 59 is turnably mounted on the wall 52 by a ring 54 vwhichengages upon the end 5| and engages the 4 inner face of the wall 52. A cover plate 55 is mounted across the inner face of the flange 53 and is held in position with screws 55. The flanges 0 and 53 are formed with openings 51 for screws by which they may be attached to the door A stem 58 projects from the enlargement 3| and is aligned with an opening 59 formed in the door II and with another opening 60 formed in the flange 53. In an emergency the latch |2 may be opened on the knob side 50 of the door by engaging a small implement through the openings 60 and 59, and pushin the stem 58 to move the push button 30 to its out" position.
The operation of the push button lock may be understood from the following:
With the parts in the positions illustrated in Fig. 1, the knobs l8 and 59 may be turned to operate the latch I2 to withdraw and extend its keeper |3. The push button lock may be locked from one side of the door, merely by pushing in the push button 30 to its in position. The in position is one in which the projection 40 engages the opening 39 of the keeper disc 26 and in which the cam 36 engages in the opening 34 of the control disc 24 so that the cam faces 35 and 31 engage each other. Now the knob 50 cannot be turned because the keeper disc 26 is held non-rotative by the projection 40 engaging the slot 39. However, the door knob l8 may be turned for opening the latch |2 because the control disc 24 may turn a slight distance in one direction or the other, relative to the keeper disc 26 which is held stationary, since there is slight play between the peg 28 and the ends of the arcuate slot 29. When the knob I8 is turned the control disc 24 is correspondingly turned and the cam surfaces 35 working against the cam surfaces 31 move the push button 30 to its out" position. In the out position the projection 40 is moved clear of the opening 39. Simultaneously, the control disc 24 is aligned with the space 4| so that it may be turned. Now the knob l8 may turn a sufficient distance to oper-- ate the latch |2 to withdraw the bolt |3.
In an emergency the latch |2 may be opened from the knob side 50 by engaging an implement through the openings 60 and 59 and pushing the stem 58 to move the push button 30 to its out" position.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
