This invention relates to door closure `fasteners, by which a latch bolt is retracted by turningthe door knob or handle on either side of the door. Theinvention more particularly relates to locking devices for such closure fasteners `so that by operating a lock lever or handle, usually provided on one side of the door, the door becomes locked and cannot be ope-ned from the other side of the door. The structure thus far described is the conn ventional door closure, comprising essentially a pair of door knobs and alatch bolt which is retracted by turning. the knobs. It will be noted that the type of doory closure illustrated is, in the Anomenclature of the trade, the non-mortice type,
by which is meant that a large rectangular shaped opening need not be cut or morticed into the free edge Aof the door to receive the rectangular block-usually required in mortice type closures.

Inner plate 30 may be secured to, or form part of, rose plate I8 or it may be secured directly to the door, the latter fastening being shown (screws 3|) in the illustrative iigures.
It will be observed from Figures 3, 4 and 5, that inner plate 30 is provided with holes 34, through which pass the screws I4, which secure the rose plate to the door. Inner plate 30 is formed to provide a trackway or slideway 32-see especially Figures 3 and 4-for a pair of slide elements 3 3. Pivoted to the inner plate at 35a. is a pair of lever arms 35, each provided with a slot 35s, in which is received a pin 33p, provided on the said pair of slides 33. A tensile spring 36 is provided between, and attached to, the pair of levers 35, due to which the two levers are urged to approach each other (as shown in Figure 3). The two said slots 35s on levers 35 are oriented as shown in Figures 3 and 4, so that the tendency of the two levers: to approach each other-due to spring 36 just described-is communicated to the slides 33, which likewise are normally urged by the spring 36 to approach each other.
The inner edges of the pair of slides 33, i. e. the edges which approach each other, are provided with notches or cut-outs'39 which embrace the square knob spindle I9, when the pair of slides are in approaching position, as shown in Figure 3. Hence in the position of the parts shown in Figure 3with the pair of levers and the pair of `slides in approaching position, the x1 spindle I3 will be held between the slide cut outs 39 in locked position.
Provided between the distal ends of lever arms 35 is a cam element 45 generally of the shape shown in Figures 3 and 4, having a long axis (vertically oriented in Figure 3) and a short axis normal thereto. In the position shown in Figure 3, with the short axis of cam element 45 placed between the distal endsfof levers 35, the said levers and the pair of slides are in approaching position, with the knob spindle locked between the slides. By turning cam element 45 from locking position (Figure 3) 90 to the position shown in Figure 4, with the long axis of the cam between -thedistal yends of levers 35, boththe levers and the slides 33 are spread apart, to unlock knob To permit this turning of cam element 45, inner plate'30 is provided with a circular hole 31 for a hub member 41, Figure 5, to which the cam 45 is secured (or made integral with). Hub 41 is provided with a square hole 41h, through which is passed square spindle 40, which extends through anopening IBS in inner rose plate I8; tothe end of spindle 40, projecting at the inner side ofthe door, is secured a thumb turn or ringer lever 4I.

The hub 41 may be further provided with a flange 48 having a 90 cut-out portion 48e, Figures 3 and Il, within the confines of which isa pin 38 projecting from the plate 30. Pin 38 serves to stop the turning of the thumb turn 4| and associated parts in locking position (Figure 3) by abutting against one shoulder of therecess 48o and in unlocking position (Figure 45) by abutting against the other shoulder.

In some States, cities and countries, ordinances have been enacted requiring door locking devices of the class described to be provided with means for openingthe door from the outside, by the use of a special tool or screw driver or the like. The locking device of this invention may be readily provided with this required safety opening means.
As shown in Figure 5, the locking spindle 40 extends almost to the outlet or left face IDL of the door and is provided at that end with a slot 5l for receiving the bevel end of a screw driver 50, the rose plate l provided on the outer side I of the door being provided with an opening I8s for the screw driver. The door is simply drilled, 5, Figure 5, to provide clearance through the door for spindle 45.
It will thus be observed that my invention makes it possible to quickly and facilely associate with simple latching bolt closures of the bath room lock type or the like, a locking device of novel and eiicient construction, which is economical to manufacture.
It will also be observed that while I have illustrated my invention as particularly applicable `to non-mortice type locks, my device may be installed and associated with other forms of closures, operable by a rotary spindle and that the illustration therefor is for purposes of exempliiication; and that while all of the associated parts, as exemplified, provide a form of the associated parts found to give desirable results, some of the described features may be obtained by using selected portions of the assembly illustrated. Accordingly, the illustration is not to be considered as limiting in character but that my invention is intended to be outlined within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my .invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a latch spindle fastener of the character normally provided with simple rose plates, the combination with the spindle thereof comprising means to prevent its rotation and capable of replacing either of said rose plates, comprising a separate plate assembly carrying said locking means and attachable independently of said latch boit and a manipulative member for controlling the said means comprising a rotary shaft having a portion thereof extending partially in close proximity towards one of said rose plates and extending through the other and accessible from both sides of said door, the said means on said plate includes a pair of spaced slides each of which is notched to embrace the said spindle and wherein the said manipulative member includes a lever for adjusting the said pair of slides to and from each other. In a latch spindle vfastener of the character normally provided with simple-rose plates, the i; vcombination with the spindle thereof comprising means to prevent its rotation and capable of replacing either of said rose plates, comprising a separate plate assembly carrying said locking means and attachable independently of said latch bolt and a manipulativemember for controlling the said means comprising a rotary shaft having 3. In a latch spindle fastener having a spindle and a latch bolt operatively connected thereto, the combination of a pair of slides notched to engage and lock the said spindle, each provided with a pin, a pair of lever arms provided with slots for the pins of the respective slides, and a tensile spring stretched between the distal ends of thesaid pair of leverswhereby said pair of slides are urged to approach each other and to lock the said spindle.

In a latch spindle fastener having a spindle and a latch bolt operatively connected thereto, the combination of a pair of slides notched to .engage and lock the said spindle, each provided with a pin, a pair of lever arms provided with slots for the pins of the respective slides, a tensile spring stretched between the distal ends of the said pair of levers whereby the said `pair of slides are urged to approach each other and to lock the said spindle, and a cam element positioned between the distal ends of the said pair of levers and having a short `axis ineffective to spread the levers apart and a long axis eiective to spread the levers apart whereby the said slides are spread apart to unlock the said spindle.

The combination according to claim 4 where- `in the said lever arms are provided with depresl v a spindle to which the said manipulative member and the said cam element are secured, the end of the said spindle extending towards the outer side of the door and conilned within its thickness, the end of said spindle being provided with a key receiving end, the outer rose plate being provided with an opening for a keying member to t said key receiving end.

In a latch spindle fastener, the combination comprising spaced rose plates in which spindle operating knobs are arranged to have rotary bearings, a spindle locking assembly plate arranged to be housed within one of said rose plates, said locking assembly plate carrying spindle engaging means comprising a pair of resilently joined plates each notched to engage said spindle and a rotary element for operating said means and adjusting the same into locking and unlocking position, a manuallyV operative member having a bearing in 'one of said rose plates and having a y10 portion keyed to said rotary element for positive Arotation thereof adjacent one face of said rose plate, said rotary relement being arranged to be `accessible on the opposite face by other keying means extended through an orice in the'other rose plate, whereby normally the rotary element is `operable only by said member but may be operated by said keying means through the orifice of the last mentioned rose plate.
