GEORGE J. LETOHWORTH, OF BUFFALO, AND JOSIAH LETOHWORTH, OF
AUBURN, NEW YORK. Y
HAlVlE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,958, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed June 4, 1881. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE J. LETGH- WORTH, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State ot' New York, and J OsIAH LETGHWOETH, of Auburn, in the county ot' Oayuga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Haines, of which the f'ollowin g is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to produce a light, strong, and durable hame having a neat and Iinished appearance.
Ourinvention consists,to thatend., of ahame composed of a metallic body having a groove or depression and a wooden or other suitable lling secured in the groove or depression of the metallic body, as will be hereinafter fully set forth. f
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 isl afront elevation ot' ourimprovedhame. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the filling. Fig. 3 is a frontelevation of the metallic body of thehame. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scalein line a', Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a similar crosssection, showing a modified construction of our improved hame.
Like letters ofreference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the metallic body of the hame, which is formed by a trough or channel-shaped plate composed, as shown in Figs. l, 3, and 4, of a back plate, a, adapted to fit against the collar, and two ibrwardly-projectingmarginal ianges, b b.
O represents a filling, of wood or other suitable material, made of the proper shape to lit in the depression or groove in the metallic body A, between the flanges b b thereof. The rear side of the fillingO fits against the back plate, a, of the metallic body A, and its front or face side is made of any desired form. The lilling O is secured to the metallic body Abyriv# ets d, or other suitable fastenings. The metallic body A is preferably constructed of malle- 4 5 able cast-iron, and provided with the usual loops, llame-eye, and terrets, which may be cast in one piece with the body, or otherwise.
In the modified construction represented in Fig. 5 the metallic body A constitutes the front l flS or face portion and the side portions of the 5o hame, and the lling O is secured in the depression or groove which is formed on the rear l sideof the body. The rear side ot the filling bears against the collar and its convex front side against the similarly-curved front side of the metallic body.
In manufacturing' our improved haine the cast metallic bodies are japanned, tinned, or otherwise finished, and the wooden iillings, which are cut by suitable machinery, are paint- 6o edseparately, and after these parts are so finished the body A and tilling O, constituting one hame, are secured together. In this manner the operation ot' iinishing the metallic part is prevented from defacing the wooden partof the hame, and vice Versa, and a neat-looking hame is thereby very cheaply produced. The filling serves not only to strengthen the hame, but prevents the accumulation of dirt in the groove of the hame, and where itis applied to the rear 7o` side of the metallic body, as shown in Fig. 5, it prevents the edgesof the grooved haine from being pressed into the collar and forming creases therein.
We claim as our invention- 1. A hame composed of a east metallic body,
A, provided with a groove or depression, and
a filling, O, of wood or other suitable material, secured iu said groove or depression, forming oueof' the outer-side surfaces, substantially as 8o set forth.
2. A haine composed ot' a metallic body, A, formed by aback plate, c, cast with forwardly projecting flanges b b, and a filling, C, secured in the depression of the body between 8 5 'the iianges b b, forming an outer surface on one side, substantially as set forth.
