UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
E. BURROUGHS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING PAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,989, dated August 9, 1859.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, E. BURRoUGHs, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Cutting Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specical0 tion, in which- Figure l, is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2, is a front view of the same. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line x, of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for cutting paper for the use of printers, bookbinders, and others; and consists in the employment or use of an oscillating reciprocating knife arranged and operated in a peculiar way, and used in connection with a movable bed for adjusting the paper beneath the knife, and a clamp for holding the paper in proper position on the bed while being cut.
The object of the invention is to obtain a machine that may be readily manipulated and capable of being operated either manually or by other power, and one that may be driven by a small or moderate application of the same.
To enable others to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular frame which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts. In the upper part of the frame A, a bed B is placed on suitable ways or guides a, a, said bed being allowed to slide freely back and forth thereon. At the under side of the bed B, at about its center there is a rack C, into which a pinion D gears, said pinion being on a. shaft E, which is placed transversely in the frame A, and has an index Z), attached to one end of it, said index being at the outer side of a circular graduated scale-plate or dial c, attached to the side of the frame A; the shaft E, passing through the center of the graduated plate c.
At each side of the frame A, there is an upright d, which is' slotted vertically and through which the ends of a bar F pass.
To this bar, between the uprights al, d, is attached a knife G, which is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The bar F is attached at each end by pivots or joints e, to rods H, H, the lower ends of which are attached by pivots f, to rack bars I, I, which are fitted to proper guides g, g, vattached to the frame A.
J, is the driving shaft, which is placed at the front part of the frame A, and has a cone of pulleys K, keyed thereon at about its center and a pinion 71 at one end. The pinion la, gears into a pinion z', which is attached to the frame A. To the pinion z', a pin j, is attached eccentrically and to the pin j, is secured one end of a pitman L, whose `other end is attached to an arm M, through the outer end of which a vertical shaft N passes and is allowed to slide thereon said shaft being provided with a groove in which a feather in the socket la, of the arm M, fits, so as to permit the arm to vibrate or rock the shaft N. This shaft N, also fits in guides Z, Z, attached to the frame A, and to the upper end of-the shaft an arm O is attached, said arm having its outer end fitted in a groove or box m, attached to one end of the knife-bar F, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
To each upright d, at its inner side a vertical rack P is attached and into each rack P, a pinion n, gears; said pinions being at the ends of a shaft Q, which passes through brackets o, 0, att-ached to a vertical and horizontal plate p, g. Each end of the vert-ical plate p, fits in grooves in the sides of the rack bars P, and the horizontal plate 7), is parallel with the bed B. On the shaft Q., at about its center a pinion or worm-wheel 1, is placed and into this worm wheel a screw s, gears, the shaft of which screw has its bearing at the upper part of the plate p.
In the lower part of the frame A, a shaft R is placed transversely; this shaft has pinio-ns u, u, placed on it, one at each end; and two toothed wheels fv, w, are placed on the shaft R. In the frame A, at it-s back ends, is placed a shaft S, about the center of which is keyed a cone of pulleys T. On said shaft S, there are also placed two hollow shafts y, @,Aone at each side of the cone of pulleys T. The outer end of the hollow shaft y, has a. pinion a', placed on it, and the outer end of the shaft a, has a pinion a, on it. The inner end of the shaft y, has a conical cup or socket b, on it, in which a cone c',
at one end of the cone of pulleys T, fits.
the gearing cZ, L, h, fv, ro-tate the shaft It, and consequently elevate the knife G. lVhen The inner end of the shaft z, has a conical i the knife is sufficiently elevated, the attendhead d, on it, and this head fits in a cor- 5 responding shaped cup or socket e, at the opposite end of the cone of pulleys T. To the cone of pulleys T, an arm f, is attached and the upper end of this arm is secured to a shaft U, in the frame A, immediately over L the cone of pulleys T. Around the shaft'U,
at one end there is a spiral spring g', the said spring bearing against a hub or boss on the shaft U, and having a tendency to keep the cone of pulleys T, in connection with the L hollow shaft y, by pressing the cone 0, into the cup or socket b.
The hollow shaft y, is connected with the shaft R, by means of two small pinions 7L, L, which connect the pinion a, with the wheel o n, on the shaft R; and the other hollow shaft z, is connected with said shaft R, by means of a wheel and pinion z', j, see Fig. 3.
One end of the shaft U, is attached to a lever V, the upper part of which is provided 5 with a lateral pin or projection c, which catches into a rack Z', attached at right angles to one end of a lever W, on the frame A. the opposite end of this lever has a vertical rod m', resting on it and passing ;0 upward in one of the uprights d. X, is a belt which passes around the cones of pulleys K, T, on the shafts J, S.
Thev operation is as follows The pape! to be cut is placed on the bed B, and firmly ;5 secured beneath the knife G, by screwing down the plate p, upon it, which is done by turning the screw s; the pinions u, u', forcing down the plate in consequence of gearing into the racks P, P. The knife G works 0 by the side of the plate p. Motion is given the shaft J, in any proper way, and the bar F, and consequently the knife G, has a lateral vibratory movement given them from the shaft J, by means of the pinions h, z',
:5 pitman L, arm M, shaft N, and arm O, which fits in the boX or recess O attached to one end of the bar F. As the knife G vibrates it is forced down and made to cut through the paper which is shown in red in Fig. 2,
.0 in consequence of the pinions u, u, gearing into the racks I, I. When the knife G, is forced down and the pinion a, of the hollow shaft z, is made to rotate the shaft R, in consequence of the cup or socket e', of the ,5 cone of pulleys T, being forced on the conical head d, which is done by drawing out the upper end of the lever V; the rack Z, retaining said lever V, in an outward direction until the paper is cut through, at which time L0 the knife-bar F will strike the rod m', and thereby throw up the rack Z, so that the spring g, of the shaft U, vwill throw the cone c, of the cone of pulleys T, into the vcup or socket Z9, of the shaft y, and cause said i5 shaft to rotate, and through the medium of ant or operator adjusts the paper beneath the knife G, by moving the bed B, which is done by turning the index Z), of the shaft E, the graduated plate c, indicating the distance of the movement of, bed B, and enabling the attendant or operator to adjust the paper with accuracy. This being done, the operator draws outward the upper end of the lever V, and throws the cup or socket e', over the conical head d, so that the knife G, will be forced down through the medium of the gearing a, z", y, w; the downward motion of the knife owing to the difference in the size of the gearing, being slower than the upward motion, as power is required during the downward motion and hence speed is necessarily dispensed with to ob-tain it.
The above-described machine has been practically tested and operates well, and with but a moderate expenditure of power. The lateral vibrating and downward movement of the knife causes the same to cut with an easy movement, a drawing cut being obtained. It will be seen that the machine may be manipulated with the greatest facility, the paper being readily adjusted beneath the knife by simply moving the bed B, and said paper also being firmly clamped on the said bed by turning the screw s; and the movement of the knife being reversed or changed from a downward to an upward movement automatically in consequence of the knife bar F, actuating the lever W, at the termination of its downward movement, and its upward movement being changed by merely drawing outward the upper end of lever V.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s:-
l. The employment or use of the reciproeating and oscillating knife G, when arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The knife G, in connection with the cone of pulleys T, attached to the shaft S, the hollow shafts y, z, with their respective gearing a, z, h, and a, z", j, and the shaft R, with its gearing fu, fw, and the racks I, I, attached to the knife-bar F, by the rods I-I, H; the whole being arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
3. The arrangement of the shaft U, with spring g, the arm f, cone of pulleys T, levers V, W, rack l substantially as shown for the purpose of automatically changing the movement of the knife from a descending to an upward movement.
4. The clamp formed of the vertical and horizontal plates p, g, when arranged as shown, so as to be-adjusted by the screw s, and pinion or worm wheel 9, pinions u, u,
and racks P, P, the latter serving in the caabling the operator to accurately adjust the pacty of both racks and gudes, sbstan paper beneath the knife. tially as and for the urpose s eci e 5. Attaching to th) shaft Ff) anindex b, E BURROUGHS' 5 arranged to move over a graduated stationary plate c, attached to the frame A, Substantially as shown, for the purpose of en- Wtnesses WM.
