Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,243, dated March 15, 1859.

Be it known that I, IV. H. GLAssGow, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Packing Barrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my invention taken in t-he line m, m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, a plan or top view of ditto.

This invention relates to a new and useful machine for packing various substances in barrels, such substances as may be packed sufficiently by striking or jarring the barrels as cement, plaster, sugar, and the like.
The invention consists in giving the barrel while being filled a rotary motion and subjecting it to a lateral and vertical jarring movement, either or both, and simultaneously with its rotating movement, to accomplish the desired end.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a platform or fiooring underneath which a power shaft B, is operated by gearing a., ZJ. On the inner end of the shaft B, a bevel wheel o, is placed, said wheel gearing into a wheel CZ, which is attached to the under side of a cam C, said cam being fitted loosely on a stationary hollow axis D, which is placed in a beam e, below the flooring. The upper surface of the cam C, is about flush with the upper surface of the flooring A. This cam is constructed by having projections f, of saw-tooth form at the edge of a circular disk or plate as shown clearly in Fig. 2. On the upper surface of the cam O, and concentrically with it, an annular ledge g, is formed of such size that the lower chimes of the barrels to be packed may fit over it. and has a horizontal arm Zt, attached to its lower end, said arm resting on a stationary annular cam G, which is attached to the lower ends of pendants z', secured to beam e. The cam G, is merely a wing j, having inclined projections Za, attached to its upper surface as shown clearly in Fig. l. To the underside of the plate E, two pendant rods Z, Z, are attached, said rods fitting loosely in the cam C.
I-I, is a hammer which is secured to the upper end of a rod I, said rod being fitted loosely on an axis m, below the flooring A, and having a spring n, bearing on it below its axis, as shown clearly in Fig. l. The spring n, keeps the rod I, against the edge of the cam G.
The operation is as follows The barrel J, to be packed is placed on the cam C, and the lower chime over the ledge g, and the substance may be allowed to run into the barrel while t-he latter is being acted upon. The shaft B, is rotated by any proper means and the cam C, as it rotates communicates motion `to the barrel J, the barrel being retained on the cam by its weight. As the cam C, rotates the plate E, is also rotated in consequence of the pins Z, Z, and said plate rises and falls by means of the arm ZL, at the lower end of the spindle F, resting on the cam G, and the barrel J, is thereby subjected to a vertical jarring movement, the pins Z, being suhiciently long to permit such movement without disconnecting the plate E, from cam C, and the cam C, as it and the barrel J, rotate forces out the hammer rod I. so that the hammer will by means of the spring n, be brought against the side of the barrel as the projections f, pass the rod I. The barrel therefore will be rotated and jarred both vertically and laterally while being filled and its contents properly placed within it.
I would remark that the up and down movement of plate E, might in certain cases be dispensed with, the hammer H, performing the work alone.
