This invention relates to a wash basin assembly for small railway car bedrooms in which a folding bed is moun'ted'for swinging movement from a vertical position within a wall cabinet atone side of the bedroom to a horizontal bed-forming position in which a portionof the bed covers a toilet bowl installed in the bedroom. Bedrooms of this type are also provided with a washbasin mounted to swing about a horizontal axis from an inaccessible vertical position within a wall cabinet to. an accessible horizontal position in whichthe basin is disposed exteriorly of said cabinet. In most cases the wash basin is mounted above or close to the toilet bowl so that it must be swung upwardly into the basin receiving cabinet in order to permit swinging of the bed to its horizontal bed-forming position.

Owing to the inaccessibility of the toilet bowl in the horizontal position of the bed it frequently happens that the occupant of the bedroom will use the wash basin as a urinal instead of raising the bed to expose the toilet bowl for this purpose. In order to prevent this unsanitary practice it is customary to provide a wash basin locking mechanism which is operated by the bed to automatically lock the basin in its inaccessible vertical position within the basin cabinet When the bed is swung to its bed-forming position and whichv can be released only by swinging the bed toits out-of-the-way vertical position within the bed receiving cabinet. The locking mechanisms here.- tofore provided for this purpose are not entirely satisfactory in that they are complicated in design and relatively expensive to manufactureand install.

With the foregoing in mind the primary object of the present invention is to provide, in a wash basin installation of the character described, an

improved form of bed actuated basin locking mechanism which is simple in design and can be manufactured and installed at a relatively small cost compared with the similar locking mechanisms now in use.

C-ther objects, advantages and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings, in which:

- The wash basin receiving cabinet 1 includes a wash basin receiving compartment l2 defined by a-top wall l3 and side walls 14. The portion of the wash basin cabinet extending below this cornpartment serves as a housing for the wash basin plumbing connections (not shown) which may be ofthe conventional type associated with wash basins mounted to swing about a horizontal axis;-

' connections to the toilet bowl (not shown) when the latter is positioned directly below the Wash basin.

In bedroom compartments of the type to which this invention relates the toilet bowl (not shown) must, on account of the limited space available, be positioned so that it is covered and rendered inaccessible by the bed Q when the latter is in its horizontal bed-forming position. For the same reason the wash basin indicated at It must be arranged so that it is capable of swinging movement from the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 to the vertical position shown in Fig. 2 in order not to interfere with the swinging of the bed 9 to its horizontal bed-forming position. Accordingly, the wash basin I6 is supported by an enclosing casing l8 mounted to swing from the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1 to the vertical position shown in Fig. 2.

Casing 48 comprises a top wall [9, a. bottom wall 20, a front wall 2| and side walls 22. The top wall i9 is provided with an opening 23 beneath which the wash basin I6 is positioned, the rim of the basin being secured in any suite able manner to that portion of the top wall IQ of casing I 8 which borders the opening 23.

Casing i8 is carried by a pair of swinging brackets 25, only one of which is shown in the drawings. These brackets 24 are arranged close to the opposite side walls 22 of casing i8 and have their upper ends secured in any suitable manner to that portion of the top wall I 9 of casing 18 which lies rearwardly of basin IS. The lower portion of each bracket 24; is fastened by a pivot 25 to a stationary bracket 26 mounted on a support 27 arranged in the wash basin cabinet '1 adjacent the lower portion of a front opening 28 of wash basin compartment l2. The bracket pivots 25 provide a horizontal axis about which the wash basin i5 and its supporting casingl8 are swingable from the position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. 2 and vice versa.

One of the brackets 24 is provided at its lower end with an extension Z ta carrying an inwardly directed locking pin 24?). When basin i6 and its supporting casing 18 are swung to a vertical posit-ion within the basin compartment I2, the locking pin 26b travels downwardly and forwardly from the position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. 2. In this last mentioned position the locking pin 24b is disposed to be engaged by a normally elevated hook member 30 which is forced downwardly into locking engagement with said pin by the bed 9 when the latter is swung to the horizontal bed-forming position shown in Fig. 2.

As here shown the locking hook 30 comprises a one-piece member including a vertically extending shank portion 3!, a hook bill 32 at the upper end of said shank portion and oppositely extending

33 and 34 at the lower end of the shank portion. The projection 34 extends forwardly from the shank 3i and through a slot 35 provided in the front wall of the cabinet I.

The hook 3i} is supported for vertical sliding movement by supporting means including a vertically extending bracket 3? having horizontally directed upper and lower end extensions 38. The upper horizontal end extension of bracket 3'! is provided with a guide opening through which passes a guide pin 68 extending upwardly from the hook bill 32. The lower horizontal extension 38 of bracket 3! is provided with a similar guide opening through which passes a guide pin shown in Fig. 2 and the bed 9 is swung to a vertical out-of-the-way position within the bed cabinet 8 the hook 30 will be disposed in the elevated position shown in Fig. 1 by the liftingaction of spring 42. When the bed 9 is swung downwardly to the horizontal bed-forming position shown in Fig. 2 it will engage and depress the hook projection 3,4 to shift hook 30 downwardly to the basin locking position shown in Fig. 2 in which the hook bill 32 is engaged over the looking pin 24b to lock the basin l8 within the basin cabinet l2 as long as the bed 9 is in the position shown in Fig. 2. When the bed 9 is returned to its vertical out-of-the-way position within the bed cabinet 8, the spring 42 will raise the hook 3|] to the basin releasing position shown in Fig. 1 so that the basin and its supporting casing 18 may then be swung out of the basin compartment l2 to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 1.

From the foregoing it will be seen that once the basin It has been locked in its vertical inaccessible position within the basin compartment i2 by the bed actuated locking means provided for this purpose, it cannot be released and swungto its horizontal position without first raising the bed to expose the underlying toilet bowl. This considerably lessens the possibility of the wash basin being used as an urinal.

The hook supporting and guiding bracket 37 is supported from the front wall of the lower portion of the cabinet 7 by a suitable supporting angle 44 to which said bracket is attached.

Having thus described the nature of my invention and a preferred embodiment thereof it defined as follows:

1. A wash basin installation comprising a cabinet provided'with a basin-receiving compartment open at the front, a wash basin, means mounting said wash basin for swinging movepin rigidly secured to said basin to travel in an' arcuate path so that said locking pin is disposed below said axis when the basin is swung to its vertical position within said compartment, a normally elevated basin locking hook slidably mount d in the ca inet el w th piv tal a is f aid basin, sa hoo hav ng a ll p r n beneath wh ch said l cki g p n is d sp s d in he vertical p s t on f sa in, a spring n rmally holding the hook in an elevated position and a bed-engaging projection extending outwardly from said cabinet through a slot in the front wall of the cabinet and adapted to be depressed by engagement of a bed therewith to force the hook downwardly so that the bill of the hook engages over said locking pin to lock the basin in its vertical position within said compartment.

2 In a wash basin installation for bedroom accommodations of the type including a bedroom compartment equipped with a bed mounted to swing from a vertical out-.of-the-way position to a horizontal bed-forming position, a cabinet having a wash basin receiving compartment, a wash basin. means mounting said Wash basin for swinging movement about a horizontal axis located in the lower portion of said compartment, said basin being swingable about said axis from a horizontal position extending outwardly from the lower portion of said compartment to a vertical position in which said basin is housed in said compartment and bed-actuated means for looking said basin against swinging movement when the basin is disposed in its vertical position within said compartment and the bed is swung to its horizontal bed-forming position, said locking mechanism comprising a locking pin, means rigidly securing said locking pin to said basin so that said pin is disposed in a basin locking position below the pivotal axis of the basin when the latter is swung to its vertical position within said compartment, a hook member engageable with said locking pin for locking the basin in its vertical position within said compartment, said hook member including a shank provided, at its upper end, with a hook bill and at its lower end with a bed-engaging projection extending outwardly through a slot in the front wall of the cabinet, means mounting said hook for vertical sliding movement relative to said cabinet, a spring normally holding said hook in an elevated position to permit said locking pin to be swung to a position directly below the hook bill when the wash basin is swung to its vertical position within said cabinet, the aforesaid projection of the hook member adapted to be engaged and depressed by the bed when the latter is swung to its bed-forming position whereby said hook is forced downwardly to engage the hook bill over said locking pin to thereby prevent swinging movement of the basin to its horizontal position until the bed is raised to its out-of-the-way position and a bed-supporting rail adapted to engage and support the bed after it has depressed the projection of said hook to a basin locking position.
